People Being People
Wednesday August 27, 2003
While it is heartening to see a surge of adoption offers for a cat who has "made the news" for one reason or another, it does give pause for wonder. One wonders the motivation of these people. Are they true cat lovers, or are they simply desirous of obtaining a conversation piece, a "coffee-table" cat to display to envious friends? Where are these same people when thousands of cats are killed in their local pounds every year? How can they fly thousands of miles to rescue a cat and not drive a few miles to their local humane society shelter and rescue one of hundreds waiting there, one who will be every bit as loving a companion as the "cat of the minute"? (The pictured cat is waiting patiently for a "forever home," if his time doesn't run out first.)
