How Could You?
Wednesday January 28, 2004
When Jim Willis wrote this essay, he probably had no idea that it would eventually be published in over 22 languages, or that it would do more for the cause of homeless shelter animals than anyone ever had. He only did what he had to do: write, and write beautifully and passionately. Jim's essay was inspired by Holly-Go-Lightly, one of his many, many rescue dogs, who lived her last years with him and his other beloved dog and cat companions.
Jim lost Holly last year, and now he has lost 13 other beloved dogs and cats, along with his home, to fire. I haven't talked with Jim yet - I know he is in mourning, and trying to make sense out of the senseless.
But I know that he will rebuild his sanctuary, and that he will never give up his relentless need to save homeless castaways. That's just the kind of man he is.
Jim would ask that you download and print "How Could You?" and send it to your local newspapers to publish in their animal shelter sections - or to your local radio station to read aloud on the air. (A couple of years ago a Toronto DJ literally stopped traffic during the busy commute hour with his emotional reading of this essay. )
I would ask that you visit Jim's Tiergarten Sanctuary Trust web site, read the information there, and then follow your heart.
