Dear Franny,
I read the article "Free Kittuns" over in About Pets. It made me sick, as I know all too well what often happens to kittens/cats placed this way. (I used to be involved in cat rescue years ago.) I used to advise people (and still do) to charge something, and check out prospective adopters as thoroughly as possible...rather than hand them over to just anyone (who can make up any story. The "bunchers" that sell animals to labs, cults are very cunning and "believable" to unsuspecting people who trust everyone.
But then, you already know this. How do we get this story out to people who don't get this site...the "somewhat ignorant" folks who do not get their pets neutered/spayed, and then just giveaway the poor innocent "victims,." who often wind up in the wrong hands.
I would like this article placed on every bulletin board and newspapers that advertise "free kittens." Perhaps many lives could be saved, if only people would be enlightened on this problem.

"Free Kittuns" was written by the incomparable Jim Willis, and is included in his book, "Pieces of my Heart." If you were touched by this essay, you will love the book. If you were sickened by this essay, consider doing what you can to help save kittens from similar fates. Although written as fiction, this essay is an all too accurate picture of what can happen when kittens' lives are valued too cheaply. Please copy the essay and post it everywhere you see advertisements for "free kittens." (Be sure to include the author's name.) The world can only change for the better through the involvement of caring people - voices for those who cannot speak for themselves.
