New Cat City: My First Cat Adoption
Tuesday November 9, 2004
Can a man who is allergic to cats successfully adopt one as a family member? Why would he even want to consider such a huge jump of faith, especially when the only pet he's ever had is a goldfish?
Avram Piltch, the Managing Editor of About.com, approached me tentatively many months ago, with the thought that he'd really love to adopt a cat, if he could overcome his allergies. Since then, we've exchanged emails and instant messages on almost a daily basis, exploring the possibilities of his realizing his dream of becoming a "cat dad."
I honestly have never met anyone with such enthusiasm for cats, nor such determination to surmount the obstacles toward having one, and I want Avram to have a cat almost as much as he does.
Avram has started a blog to track his progress and he has honestly shared his thoughts and emotions with those who happen to visit. Our goal is twofold: to demonstrate that people with allergies can, indeed, successfully live with cats, and to follow the journey of a new cat owner. No doubt there will be twists and turns along the way, and at this point no one knows where it will end.
We'll bring you up to date here, and you can expect to see New Cat City as a regular daily feature on the About Cats site. By the way, feel free to post comments on Avram's blog. We'd both like to see how readers respond.
