Kitten Diary: Name the Kittens Challenge
Wednesday August 2, 2006
The Kitten Diary has already achieved much popularity since we first published it last Thursday. The three Scottish Fold kittens are thriving, their mother, Dottie, is attentive and loving, and hints of personality are starting to show. A Day 5 update is online now and Days 6 and 7 soon to come.So far, they are named in the order of their birth: Kitten 1, Kitten 2, and Kitten 3. Their breeder, Ev Russell and I thought it would be fun to allow our readers to have a hand in giving these kittens preliminary names, so we're holding a little impromptu contest.
The names that ultimately win will not be their permanent names, but "call names" to be used by the breeder to distinguish them and in the ongoing Kitten Diary on this site. Naturally, any future owners of the kittens will reserve the right to rename them, if they choose.
This contest has no prizes; only the pleasure of having a part in the naming of these kittens. This is how we'll do it:
- Send an email to me at cats.guide@about.com, with a suggested name for one or more of the kittens. Describe how you chose that name and how it relates to the specific kitten (Use Kitten 1, etc. to identify)
- Include in the email your full name, whether you want your full name or first name only to be used in the credit.
- I will forward the emails to Ev and we will choose the best 6 names submitted for each kitten. In cases of duplicate names, the date and time sent will determine our choice. Originality of the name and how it applies to the kitten will be our primary criteria, e.g., forget "Calli" for the calico girl.
- I will post voting polls for each kitten here at a later date. Readers are allowed only one vote per poll
- Closing date for email name suggestions is Tuesday, August 15th, at 11:59 p.m. ET

The 1st name that came to mind when I saw the orange tabby kitten was “Muffin” named after an orange tabby that we had! He was a unique & the sweetest natured tomcat we ever had!!! He grew up with my daughter & my daughter used to hold him just like a baby & he loved it!!! He purred like crazy & was a great mouser!!! As a matter of fact (I think because he was born on a farm) he could catch anything!!! Mice, birds, rats, even a mole!!! Now that is not an easy thing for any cat to do but boy he was special indeed!! We had to put a bell on him to warn the birds but he would catch all kinds of things & present us his “gifts” (special compliment from a cat’s point of view but ugh:::) I think it would probably bring him luck!!! He lived to be almost 17 yrs old. My daughter & I still miss him terribly!!!
Orange cats seem to have a universally sweet personality. Our long-gone Pumpkin, Shannon, and our present Jaspurr all were (are) amazingly affectionate and purrsonable.
I think BB for Baby Blue ..
How about: for the mostly orange kitten – Ginger or Honey; for the mostly white and orange with blue or black kitten – Sugar Plum; and for my personal favorite – the blue and white baby – Sapphire. Thought about the name “Elvis” for it (Blue Suede Shoes, lol) but no. They are all three just precious!
I have a small kitten that looks a lot like the picture of the kitten on your web site. We named her ‘Tigger”. As my Sister used to say all the time “Tiger” and “Tigger” are NOT the same!
i like precious for the #1 kitty she is so sweet. just a pretty little thing. and kitten # 2 the other girl kitty how about misty i have a misty and it seems to fit her and the boy kitty toby t. thank you for letting us enjoy the kitties. i have 3 kitties of my own misty trouble and clifford. so much joy that they bring.
I think the babies are so sweet, so I would name the first little girl, Sweet Pea, the little boy, would be Sweet William, and the little calico, would be, Sweetie Pie.
Myself I let my cats name themselves. Like Squirt, when I got him, he was so little he fit in the palm of my hand.I would tell him he was such a good little squirt. So I just named him Squirt. I have found that the cats personalities will let you know what to name them. You have beautiful babies. Good Luck with them and I know you will give them a name that fits them perfectly.

Thanks for the comments, Susan.
While it is true that we name most cats according to their personalities, the breeder and I thought it would be fun for our readers to participate. The “call names” we’re looking for are only temporary, and of course, future “owners” of the kittens will choose their own names (or let the kittens choose them, as you suggested.)
But for now, it will be nicer for me to be able to refer to them in the gallery as “Joey, Alice, and Betty” (or whatever names win the contest) than “Kitten 1, 2, or 3.”
just love those seet babies..
i think you should call them by the names of a few of my past kitty children.. Sadie Jollie… or sir puma
millicent or Lord daqurie ice
or bessie and or samuel.. even kneecap is cute…but i call him little man.
i have 7 right now and they are so unique in there manners and cuteness…thanks for sharing your photos..

FOR KITTEN 1 THE ORANGE TABBY: PEACHES
FOR KITTEN 2 THE CALICO : CATICO
FOR KITTEN 3 THE BLACK & WHITE: ROMEO
I don’t know about the two females, but kitten #2, the orange and white male, I’d suggest Moose. They’ve mentioned that he’s the biggest of the trio, and was even referred to as a ‘mooselet’.
Dilute girl: Angel , Blue and white girl: Meescha, Orange and white little boy: Rascal
I sent in am email to Frannie but I’ll leave my suggestions here as well.
#1 Sophia – means wisdom
#2 Hamish – after a detective in a mystery series
#3 Fiona – for her fiery personality
Scottish names for Scottish kitties.

I have three cats; Willow, Misty and Fizzy. I agree with what someone else posted about cat’s naming themselves. when we brought fizzy home, we named her because even at that age she was spunky and hissed and spitted like a firework if the other cats came near her!
Personally I would name the cats as follows:
the orange tabby: fat Louey, just cos he’s the biggest and I love the name Louey. Also, it’s like the cat in princess diaries!
the black and white: domino
the calico: I’m not sure, but I’ll think about it some more!
i remember a couple years ago before we got our dog, our first cat had a batch of only tabby kittens and one of them had a marking that looked EXACTLY like africa! it was amazing, i’m still sad that we had to give him away…
hi I love the cats they are so cute .I really want one so bad but I have to cats.I look so cute just like the cats at my place.I look cute.my cat is mean to my dog.do you have a dog?
I Think the First One COuld be Called Princess, the Second Ginger and the third Minger

hh.. good one..
