Cats Picture of the Week: Mr. Willie

Saturday September 16, 2006
This is Mr. Willie. We found Willie at the SPCA when he was about the size of a small rat. He was very ill but full of spunk so we took him home, now he is huge, thinks he's a dog and emulates everything our dog does.

Cats Pictures of the Week are selected from general photo submittals. You may send your own great cat photo, using the guidelines on the Photo Submittal page. Be sure to write a paragraph or so about the cat, at least two or three sentences. Our galleries have space for 2500 characters, including spaces, so don't be afraid to tell us about your cat!

Like you I too cried when I read the story about little Bluebelle. Even though I have never met Bluebelle it made me think about my precious kitties. They have brought me such love and joy it’s hard to express in words. I don’t understand people who say “they are not cat lovers”. I say to them “try it, you’ll love it!”.

Franny, it broke my heart to read that one of our little ones did not make it. We get so involved with their lives, sort of “cyber possessive”. Poor Ev!! Not every story can be a success story, of course, but that won’t stop us from wanting success. Big * sigh *, and leaking eyes because one could not make it. Tough story to write. Her little piccie is still to the right of this screen, and those fantastic eyes keep looking at me. Have to go now. Lump in throat.

Working in the pet medical field I unfortunately have been exposed to such tragities on a more regular basis. Strays that are brought in injured, seriously ill, starving. Owners bringing in their sick or geriatric pets for euthanasia. It is never ever easy. It is always difficult. I find it difficult to give emotional support to the client who is coming to say their last “good-bye” to their beloved companion, their best friend, their furry family member who has loved them unconditionally and fully even when they were at their worst. Who stood by them no matter what. Who never held a grudge and was quick to forgive and forget. The one who filled their hearts with joy and love, but who will soon have to leave their hearts broken and aching, when I myself am choking back tears. The ones that get to me the most are the strays that have no one they love and have been loved by to be there when they take their last breath and their heart’s final beat. The ones who have had a harse, difficult life without having known what it is to be loved and cared for, such as the beautiful little 6 week old kitten that was brought in by a Good Sam the other day. She was wobbbly, extremely thin and malnourished and kept falling over. She was blind. Through an exam it was determined that she was serverly neurologic, having either received a blow to the head (however there were no outside injuries), eaten something toxic or was purposely poisoned. She never knew love or compassion from a human being until it was shown to her by the Good Sam bringing her to us and our mercy through euthanasia ending her suffering. Bluebell was tenderly loved and cared for. Although her live was brief and far too short she knew love. In that we can have comfort. In that it will help us with our grief at loosing such a beautiful precious kitten. She had joy for life and experienced the joy of life up until those last few days. She will be desperately missed.
