Painted Cats Spoof

Tuesday February 13, 2007
You probably have received one of those emails showing pictures of vividly painted cats, and maybe wondered at the cruelty of it. David Emery, Guide to Urban Legends, tracked down the origin, and...surprise!...it came from a cleverly "Photoshopped" book. David says,
Some folks are irate, others are perplexed, and many are downright incredulous after viewing a widely forwarded email containing dozens of photographs of ordinary housecats whose fur appears to have been painted in a variety of decorative colors and designs (examples here). "I don’t see how a cat would remain still to have themselves painted. This can't be genuine," objected one reader who found the email entitled "Painted Cats" in her inbox earlier this week. "I find this dangerous and abusive," wrote another.
I can only offer the caveat, "Don't try this at home." Unfortunately, some of these harmless entrepreneurial endeavors inspire younger folks (and older ones who should really know better) to emulate them. I'm sure some of you will remember some graphic examples of that, so I won't mention them here.

When in doubt, always depend on Snopes’ Urban Legends. This particular “scam” is FALSE. Snopes has investigated thousands of claims for peculiar and quite frankly….suspicious reality! lol

I have provided the link to the page dedicated to the Painted Cats. It’s rather nice, in a way, to be able to enlarge the image so as to appreciate the photo, as images on *this* site are generally way too small and there’s no magnification to view it better. Oh well.

So that settles that. I suppose. Maybe???

Lorraine: I’ll have you know that I was so intrigued after viewing those photos, I immediately picked up my ocicat and dumped her into a vat of deep-red tomato juice. After drying her off in the microwave, I used a black magic marker to draw double rings of circles around her spots. She loves her new coat and prances about in it confidently. She could do her very own fashion show. Gosh, I wish I could show you a picture, but the photos on this site are too tiny.

The first time I saw those pictures the other day as forwarded to me by my friend who knows I love cats; I thought right away that those were just digitally tweaked. There’s no way you can paint a cat (of all animals!) that perfectly. I do hope no kids would be able to get handle of those pics because young as they are they would surely do that to their own cats or dogs for that matter. I think the photos were a work of art and at the same time suggestive of an act that might harm animals. A big sign should say this was only an optical illusion or anything that would tell the reader that this was not done on those poor animals. The note that came with the pics even suggested that the painter was paid huge sums of money to do that!

As an extremely talented and sucessful pet groomer of 18 years, I was intrigued! Animal Painting has been around a long time. I own a pet salon and day spa that offers this service. Obivously not to this photoshoped perfection, but their are a few extremely talented groomers that can do it. I have actually won a trophy at a dog “hair show” for making a standard poodle look like a 4 wheeler. I have seen poodles made into, Octpus, clown, merry-go-round horse, the list goes on and on. At the time I groomed “Clair” for this particualr contest, I pre-cut her hair 6 weeks before and then took 17 hours (not all at once! this took about 5 days) to dye her hair and shave in and scissor the hair to be 3D. She enjoyed the attention and was a flashy and willing participant in the fun. These pictures might have been photoshoped, but 7 years ago I figured that Clair’s hair-do would have been 9K to do for someone. I know that my cat would sit to be painted, and plan to investigate how to do it safely. All those people who think this is cruel have no idea that there are many pets in the world who view grooming as a pleasure. I know many animals who get bows and painted toenails, or colored caps (which last longer and help with distructive scratching). And some that proundly wear clothing or bandanas! And if you love your animal enough to have them painted, dyed, or clothed or whatever, go for it! If your pet enjoys it, and you enjoy your pet this way, what is wrong with that? You just have to know what you are doing, and how to safly apply the “paint” with out stress, trama, or sedation. I know lots of dogs and cats that would do it and like it and be proud of it. Pets love attention and what a better way to draw attention to them?

hello, friends.
Cats loved to be treated nicely.
we have a ginger Tom, called Vinny, he’s 17 and fit as a fiddle. He really enjoys singing like Elvis and being brushed. He also enjoys being painted, we’ve used henna, food dyes, material dyes, and i’ve even air brushed him, with patterns, he seriously loves the attention. i dont think these photos are photoshopped. maybe we’d all enjoy recieving more attention. wouldn’t you?
love and light michael

What a strange bunch of people, wanting to paint their pets? Only a human could be so ridiculous.. Go paint your mates if you like it so much and leave the poor animals alone!
