Feline Asthma

That Hacking Cough Might Not be a Hairball
A severe attack of feline asthma may sometimes be discounted as just another hairball attack, or possibly choking on a bit of food. The cat will cough for awhile, the concerned caregaver will comfort him, then he will appear to be fine.

But symtoms like these need to be checked out by a veterinarian, to eliminate asthma. You may be sent home with a bottle of hairball remedy, but if asthma is the diagnosis, you will learn ways of managing it, by reading the above-linked article.

Watch also, this YouTube video of a cat experiencing respiratory distress from a severe asthma attack. If it looks familiar, you need to get your cat to the veterinarian for respiratory testing.

My Abyssinian cat, Rusty, has asthma, diagnosed by our vet. She was able to find a device called “Aero-Kat” that attaches to a Flo-Vent inhaler. It has a tube and a rubber face mask. You puff the inhaler into the tube while the mask is on the cat’s face, and it allows him to breath in the medicine. It has helped his asthma immeasurably. He no longer needs quarterly steroid shots (perhaps only once a year, or less, now). Just passing on the info to anyone else who has this problem with their cat. I believe you or your vet can get the Aero-Kat device online.

Hi Marie,

Yes, I mentioned AeroKat (with a link to their site) in the two-page article that is linked from the title of my blog entry. I assume you haven’t read it.
