Updated List of Recalled Cat Foods
Monday March 19, 2007
Menu Foods in Canada has recently updated the list of recalled cat and dog foods. The suspect foods are of the "cuts and gravy" variety, packaged in cans or pouches, and dry foods are not affected by this recall. Although an original report pointed toward a wheat product from a source that has now been discontinued, the Menu Foods press release now only states that "timing of the production associated with these
complaints, coincides with the introduction of an ingredient from a new supplier." Their press release goes on to say that Menu Foods is now using ingredients from another supplier.
The recalled cat foods have been blamed for sickness and death due to renal (kidney) failure. The symptoms are lethargy, vomiting, and poor appetite. Like other consumers who have recently fed their cats any of these products, I am closely observing my cats for any of these symptoms. My heart goes out to all those cat lovers who have lost a cat or are presently dealing with this very serious kidney toxin problem.

I am beside my self with all this food recall news. I have 4 foster cats and 3 of my own. I feed my foster cats the spechal kitty pouches,And the can to the strays out side. And once in a while to a couple of my inside babys. The thing is ,is how are we ever going to be able to trust the food suppyers any more. And second ive have been looking every were for some kind of help on what we can do for the sick cats.i beleave that my 4 foster cats are sick from this food.I can afford to pay for that kind of vet bill. But i cant let them suffer.
My cat became ill in November and died in February from stomach cancer. I question if the recalled cat food (Iams) may have caused this? My cat was a healthy 5 year old who suddenly displayed the symptoms listed in the recall products but my vet could not discover what was wrong with her until I took her to another vet and he discovered the large malignant tumor in her stomach. I wonder if anyone else has experienced this???
My cat is approx 2 yrs old and withing the past three days has become very ill. The vet says he has kidney failure and for the past two days has been at the vet with an IV and catheter. He was eating Meow Mix dry food. I have recently learned of the recalls since he has become ill. I am searching for an actual list of foods since I do have another cat and do not want to lose them both. Any advise from anyone?
Puss Puss would have been 22years old today. A healthy energetic cat. until
3 weeks ago. she stopped eating her dry food and was loosing some weight. She seemed hungry all the time. I started suplementing her food with Iams, Authority, Science diet. all pouches with gravey. from Petco and Ralphs grocery stores. She kept loosing wieght and refused to eat for 5 days. she seemed to cry and wander around the house lost. My Boys begged me to not put her down. She lost her fight on wednesday march 13. checking her food I can say for a fact everyone of the pouches I have left are on the recall list. I know she was very old. But that does not lessen the pain in knowing that trying to make her final days easy. Caused her only agony. She was a force of nature and her doctor said she should have gone 4 or 5 more years. Damn the incompetence and arogance of these greedy companies. To hell with the lot of them.
Tiffany would have been 17 in a couple of months. She had thyroid and had lost a little weight so I wanted to fatten her up and gave her all her favorite cat food. I didn’t know it would take her to her grave! Try to live with that guilt!!
I heard they added more foods to the list of recalled foods….does anyone know where to find this updated list??
Thanks!
I want to know about now !!!! where do we get food we can trust???
To those with specific questions, I have created a new FAQ about the recall, with answers to most questions. You can find it linked on my main page or go directly to the article: FAQ: Major Pet Food Recall
To Tew and other scared people: You should be able to trust any food NOT on the lists already provided. They are completely up to date as of NOW. ONLY the “cuts and gravy” variety of canned food and food packets are involved in this recall. If your brand is not listed, you should be okay.
I”m realy sorry for all how has lost their beloved pets I to have feed my three little dog tanted dog for I have stop all wet foods for them ; but Im worried they will become sick .how long until i dont need to worrie. I started making my own from arecipe on line ‘ I will never trust bought dog food again.
I buy my dogs “Lone Star” which is a dry dog food from a company local in Texas. I buy it at a feed store where people can also buy food for horses. Since the dangerous food in question is from a large manufacturer from Canada, if you look for local dog and cat food companies in your state, then you’ll have a chance to get your pet some good healthy food.
I have some canned food from the bad list. Sometimes I want to treat my dogs and give them canned food. I’ve had them for a while, but I’m not sure if they’re from the bad batch or not so I’m going to throw them away.
I have two sphynx cats and noticed almost two weeks ago they were not acting quite right. They had a loss of appetite and then their bm’s became a little loose. I had to go out of town, so I had my daughter watching them and told her about what was going on and to call if they got any worse. She told me while I was away that the cats didn’t seem to care for their moist food and she opened another can and they loved it. It just so happens that I ran out of my usual brand and picked up a different brand for her to use while I was away. She told me the cats were doing better. When I returned home, I noticed their big bowl of water was dry. I asked my daughter if she had forgotten to give them water and she said no. I got a call last night from my other daughter who had caught all this on the news and told me the symptoms. I freaked out and am taking them both in to be evaluated. It’s scarey to think that I bought food that is supposed to be “all natural, no fillers, no preservatives”, blah, blah, blah. So much for depending on their word.
what i want to know is it just wet food or is it dry food also, because my cats and dogs eat dry food, and i dont know if its dry food soooo…im really worried!!
I recently got a cat and fed her Nunn-Better dry cat food to her and it gave her servere diareha. I would be watching out for cat food and possiably taking it off the selves. Please mail this to News 25 and recalled company.
I just lost my very healthy active 11 year kitty. I give him special kitty soft food as a treat 3-5 times a week. he just turned 11 on march 16. He just stopped eating then stopped drinking. I took him to the vets and they tried everything to save him. His kidneys failed and he died. I fully believe it was from the cat food. He has never had a cold or any illnesses ever and always be a active, healthy, indoor kitty with a good appetite. I have tried for 2 days to call the phone number for the recall and all I get is a busy signal. Anyone know of another way to get through to them?
Pet food from Canada may contain horse meat from Nevada. These horses roam around leach mine heaps which contain cyanide and other chemicals. It is possible for these horses to build a tolerance to these chemicals which tranfers from the horse meat to the pet.
Thanks Douglas. That would explain the renal failure. They still do not know the exact cause of this. Hill’s knew there was a problem and used animals for testing to try and find out what was going on. Some of these animals used for this testing are dead now. I went to the Hill’s website and found out that they are a branch of Colgate-Palmotive.
Douglas and Monique:
That’s an interesting theory, but the recalled foods were manufactured at Menu Foods plants in the United States. I haven’t had time to research the ingredients in each and every recalled product, but if horse meat was present, the product would legally have to say “meat” or “meat byproducts” somewhere on the label.
Thanks for responding Franny. Thank you also for your consistant hard work thru this mess.
My 11 year old dog became sicker and sicker and had stopped eating in a two week period and then could not move at all and died. Where can I find an updated list of the 40 brands (over an above the 53) that had been posted at the recall site???
Judy, I don’t know where you got the information that there are 40 additional brands of dog food involved. The Menu Foods Recall site only lists 53 brands. Perhaps you are thinking of the 42 brands of cat food listed there? Some of the news media just lumps the numbers together in their reporting.
I’m terribly sorry for your loss.
My cat buster has been eating the Purina, Friskies ‘Savoury Selections’ hard food. I hope this doesn’t affect him..
He also eats Fancy Feast canned food, is this on the updated list?
Are the recalled foods the moist kind only? I feed my cats special kitty (dry crunchy food) is this alright?
I feel awful for the dog and cat owners who have lost their pets. I can only imagine what they’re going through.
My heart goes out to everyone that has lost there Cat or Dog. I have a Cat that is part of my family. I wouldn`t know what to do if something happen to him. I love him and like my famiy I tell him (Fruity)everyday that I love him……….Be safe, Live safe. Carol
I am outraged by this! What I want to know is how in the world did this happen? Does anyone know?
A couple months ago my cat started throwing up, so I switched her food to hairball food thinking that was the problem. Last week she stopped eating and hardly went to the bathroom. We brought her to the vet on Friday and had to put her to sleep on Monday. The vet did exploratory surgery and discovered stomach cancer. My cat was 5 1/2 years old. She ate Iams cat food. My last cat ate Iams also and had the same symptons before she died. What is going on here? I will never ever fee my cat Iams again. This has been very desvistating to my family. I have read other reports of Iams and stomach cancer and I am thinking I killed my cat, I could have prevented it if I didn’t feed her this food.
I am glad I give my 2 14 yr old cats WITH beginning kidney failure ProPlan cat food. The vet said to give them the ‘rx food’ but they hate it..and they need quality of life. Our new kitten 18 months eats Fancy Feast..BUT I had bought the IAMS gravy pouch but thank goodness didn’t give to her. I will never ever give her Iams again..and now am looking for ALL natural, no filler food for my cats..but will watch the rest of the brands..who knows this could be a ‘test’ for us..we need to be proactive and give our animals food that is natural.
My daughters cat Mittens died because of this. She is devastated.
Paying for bills will not fix my daugthers heart.
The news on the Internet is now some DRY cat food has been recalled. The only name I could get was Hill’s Prescription Diet. I bought some Purina “Organic” dry in Janurary and within three weeks, my 12 year old Tabby become so ill that I finally had him put down. Now I’m wondering if it was the dry food that killed him. He had a lot of the symtoms mentioned on the news. At the time, the vet didn’t know why he was failing. Now I don’t know if ANY of the dry food is really safe.
Is it safe to feed my cay Science Diet original dry food for cats 1 to 6 years of age?
I am disabled and have still fed my cats iams despite the cost. now i wonder – i notice purina is not on the list.
My 7 month onld kitten has recently been diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism. I don’t know much about it but I am wondering if this recalled food has anything to do with it. From what I have been told there has only been 2 young kittens ever diagnosed with this.
i have a cat well kitten 8 months and we bought 10 things of wet food after hearing about the recall we got rid of all of it. but i love this cat soooo much and i dont want anything to happen to her so please send me a list of all the tainted food please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been buying Nutro Dry food for my seven cats because I thought it was the best for them. I don’t know what to think, what to feed them, all I know is that I am sickened and very upset for all the people who have lost their companions. My cats are like my children to me. I want to know why and how this happened. It is outrageous.
Is Friskies or fancy feast on any of the lists? My mother has 19 cats that she cares for (some inside, and others stray)…and this is the kinds of cat food she buys. Does she have to worry about these 2 brands. Also, she told me that these two brands contain gluton(?), and wondered if she had to worry about that. Any information would be helpful. Thanks in advance, Dawn
Unfortenaly my Dog died of stomach cancer recently as well. He became ill in late december, lost wait, vomited, and urinated more often, as well as refused to eat. The question I will probably have forever is, did any dog foods or snacks my dog had during that time period cause the stomach cancer? Especially considering that the time line matches up.
My cat became very ill in November and passed away after greatly suffering. We took him to the vet to have him treated but, having lots of animals growing up, I started to suspect kidney failure by his symptoms. We were all devastated when he passed.
Now that this contaminated food issue has come to light, I wonder if anyone knows how far back this goes? I have fed my animals Purina for the last six years religiously. I may switch the flavor here and there, but never brands.
It was very odd to me that such a young, healthy cat suddenly became so very ill out of nowhere. He passed November 9th. If ANYONE has any information that may help me in knowing what *really* happened to my cat, please email me at aazhydchinadoll@hotmail.com
MY CAT BECAME ILL IN NOVEMEBER BEFORE THANKSGIVING HE WAS THE HEALTHIEST CAT RAN AROUND LIKE A LITTLE KITTEN UP UNTELL NOVEMEBER HE WAS THROWING UP AND HAVING SIZURES OUT OF THE BLUE WE COULDNT FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS WRONG WITH HIM I TOOK HIM TO THE VET THEY DID ALL THE BLOOD TEST EVERYTHING WAS SHOWING UP NEGATIVE BUT I FELT LIKE MY CAT WAS TELLING ME SOMTHING ELSE WAS WRONG AND I COULDNT GET TO THE BOTTOM OF IT IN NO MATTER WHAT I DID SO THEN FINALLY AFTER 3MONTHS NOT EVEN THEY HAD ANOTHER VET COME IN AND DO A ULTRA SOUND AND THEY FOUND CANCER IN THE STOMACH AND THEY COULDNT FIGURE IT OUT THEY DREW THIS LIGUID STUFF FROM HIS STOMACH THAT WAS A WERID COLOR SENT IT IN THEN THEY SAID IT COULD OF BEEN FROM HIS AGE WELL YOU TELL ME A CAT THAT IS OLDER AND RUNS AROUND LIKE A LITTLE KITTEN HOW HE CAN END UP WITH STOMACH CANCER KIDNEY FAUILER AND THEY COULDNT FIGURE IT OUT TELL 2 DAYS BEFORE HE DIED AND HE MENT THE WORLD TO ME!!!
How can we help our cats My cat is sick from eating that POSIN food what can I do to treat her at home I dont have the money to spend at the Vets.what can I do for my cat here at home
thanks
We in America do not beleive this was an accident.
America believes our Animals were poisioned on purpose.
(Racist comments edited out)
Doesn’t matter whether it was intentional or accidental. Our government is too corrupt and inept and full of self-serving incompetent “Heck of A Job” Bush appointees to protect us. Face up to it, Republicans have succeeded in destroying the agencies that protect us. Then they get to say “government doesn’t work,” isn’t that nice?
And at this moment, the Bush government is drawing up plans to REDUCE the frequency of FDA and UDSA inspections of the factories that produce our food. It’s called “Risk Based Inspection” and it’s just what we need if we want our food safety to be on the same level as China’s.
my heart goes out to those who lost there beloved pets i to have been through vets for tainted dog food, and of course they wont take payments shame on the vets!!! but mine are ok for now start making your own dog food, rice and chicken is all they need keep are pets alive and healthy prayers to you all who lost your pets melissa
I recently went into a Dollar General Store here in Virginia and saw recalled pet foods still on the shelves for sale. These were on the first recall list for Menu Foods. They are still selling Cadilac dog food, mighty dog,and thier own brand of cat food (DG)
also the recalled treats such as pounce, jerky treats, and thier store brands of treats. Please, everyone, You have to keep up with the recall list yourself! DO NOT depend on these monet hungry store chains to do the right thing and pull the bad stuff!! It’s not thier pets that will die,it’s our beloved pets that will suffer because of thier greed.I checked the Dollar General Store web site they don’t have any information on there about recalled pet food,no way to contact them,or a list of manufacturers for the products that they sell. That’s how much they care for thier customers.Maybe someone with Dollar General Store will see this and correct the situation, but I kinda doubt that. The date that I was in the store was April 6 and they still have the first foods on the recall on the shelf.I am truly sorry for everyone who has lost a loved pet and friend to this mess,it would break my heart to lose one of my dogs or cats to this.I’ll pray for all of you,God Bless you.
This is ridiculous. I have two cats, who I love more than anything. The only kind of canned cat food they’ll eat is the “cuts and gravy” kind (they lick all of the juice off and then eat the food). They won’t eat “regular” canned cat food, as it is not “juicy” enough for them. Originally, I was feeding them the Iams Select Bites, but had changed brands. Right before the recall, I purchased some of the Iams, but luckily never fed it to them. I heard about the recall and threw it away.
I am upset about the recall, particularly because every day it seems as though a new item is added to the list. I feel horrible for the people that have lost any pet to problems with the recall. I don’t know now what I should be feeding my babies now.
However, I feel that it is ridiculous that people are taking this as the opportunity to blame the government or other countries, or anybody else about this. Contamination happens for both human and animal food. Nobody is safe from it…it can even happen in organic foods. The reason this wasn’t caught sooner is not because of any political reason. Melamine was not previously thought to have any negative side effects in animals, and even if all government agencies had top funding, this problem would not have been caught in time.
In addition, cats have a certain life span. I don’t think that it is very productive to blame all health problems that our cats have had on contaminated food. It could just be that the cat is old, and was at the end of it’s life.
I had switched my cats over to Meow Mix Market Select cat food, which while I’m sure is not “top quality” food for the cats, they love it, and are as healthy as can be. Everybody has different reasons for their selection of pet food, whether it be money, time or preference, and I don’t think that it is anybody’s right to criticize the food somebody decides to feed their cat.
Again, I am incredibly sad for all that have lost their pets, I don’t know what I would do if I lost my kitties, but everybody needs to be fair and rational. Resorting to immature name calling and political bashing does no favors to anyone.
p.s. I am a democrat and a government employee.
I am an american man that has a lot of pets including 1 dog, 4 cats, and currantly 3 “abandoned” unweened kittens.
I do agree with Lisa that blaming people will not solve the problem. However, I did some reserch on that “Xahou Anying” company, and found that they not only process food products, but I also found that they prosess chemicals as well. My advice is though to all of you that are scared of the food they feed their cats… read the lables and avoid any food that contains “wheat gluton” or if it reads “product of China”. I am not saying that all foods from China is bad, but untill all this is settled, avoid foods from China. I am very sorry for all of you who lost a pet and for some, even more. I too have many pets and they mean a lot to me… and I would be saddened if I lost them.
My mother-in Laws cat died last week from kidney failure. The cat was only 2-3 years old. I am not sure if this is what caused it but now I am worried about what to feed my cat. Does anyone have any suggestions?
We have six cats between us and our daughter. All have had signs of lethargy, excessive drinking of water and one has lost the color on the nose from grey to a grey/pink almost opaque. This cat is also begging foods other than her dry food, which she never did. All six cats eat only IAMs (purple bag) DRY FOOD. I called a vet and she suggested for home made food– white rice and boiled chicken, or white rice and ground beef (all fat washed and drained off), also she suggested the Hill’s brand for store bought. We can’t afford to have them tested, but will not take a chance on poisoning them with dry IAMs, which is still being marketed as safe at the IAMs website.
They have been on the home made food (boiled chicken and white rice) for 3 days and seem to have more energy and the one has quit begging.
Just an FYI 2 cans into a new case of Fancy Feast gravy elegant medley chicken florentine my cat became very ill (3/23/07)foaming at mouth projectile vomiting very skittish and distance, within 24 hours my other cat had less server symptoms but similar lot of lip licking not wanting eat gagging. Stop the food both seem to be doing better youngest cat had blood work and scope w/ biopsy all came back normal baffled vet, convinced it was food vet feels the same and now they both need blood work done again in 2 weeks to makes sure no permanent damage was done to their kidneys. Last July 2006 both became ill youngest bloody stool and liquid feces and crystals in urine other violent yellow foam vomiting, they were eating IAMs wt control and hairball form mixed and fancy feast fish with ASPIC and tuna with gravy( the oldest could keep down the savory salmon FF which does not have gravy) if you notice ASPIC disappeared off shelves vet told me the older one had developed sensitive stomach and the young one just needed SC C/D. Could not give any really answers of symptoms now I know it was the foods they were eating. YIKES. Will let you know how their blood work comes back . Please stay clear of anything even if not on list that has wheat gluten that FF is still not recalled and my have ruined my cats kidneys forever all because they say it is safe. Using Merrick wet food only ones with no gravy, even though it does not list wheat gluten have heard organic doesn’t have to list stuff used in small quantities, trying to find a dry not associated with Menu foods, Diamond or Purina, the only thing I can come up with is Felidae…anyone have any comments on its safety.
I have two cats and a dog and they mean everthing to me. I am worried that I am feeding them something that could kill them. I would feel very guilty if I fed my pets something that would end their lives. I just wish they could end this NOW. God bless everyone who has lost their pets.
I’d like to say something to Lisa.I don’t blame the government or another country for this mess. But I feel that someone should speak up when they see food still on the shelves that is on the recall list.I also feel that these stores should be required by law to supply the information on where the products are made and they should also post all recall information.I also feel that the companies(American or Chinese) should be held accountable for thier mistakes.I also think that menu foods knew there was a problem weeks before it became public knowledge.Otherwise they wouldn’thave tested this poison on some poor shelter animals to see if it was true.Out of 50 animals from a shelter, that were healthy animals, 7 of them died. That proves to me that they knew weeks before we did,and that they really don’t care as much as we do for the animals, thier testing was cruel and inexcusable. There had to be another way to test the food.It may have been more expensive to test it in labs but that would have been the right way to do it.As far as the name calling,it doesn’t help at all.I know that alot of people have been hurt deeply by this and some lash out out of grief or anger for what thier pet suffered through,I understand that, but if thier letters have to be edited for foul language or racial slurrs then i think they need to rethink thier statements and try to express themselves in a manner that isn’t offensive to others who have expierienced the same pain.Let’s all try to use forums like this to help each other no matter whose fault you may think this is.Please if anyone has anymore useful information post it here.If you see the recalled food still on the shelf speak up,but please try to help and support each other. All of us that own and love are pets are in this together.Check out all of the information that you can, everyday,When you find something useful to any of us post it here.God Bless you and goodbye.
For everyone whose pets have eatent he recalled foods. The laboratory Idexx on the west coast at least-they maybe national but I am not sure – they are running special blood work ups for reduced pricing to that it is more affordable for people to test thier pets. At least have the weakest or oldest pet in the family that was eating the food tested. It is likely that the elderly or sickly pets will be affected first. I have been a vet tech for 8 years and only feed dry foods. Look at the label and ask your local veterinarian if you have questions regarding certain foods. Please, do go to feeding your cat straight Tuna from the can this can be damaging to thier health as well.
I completely agree that there is no excuse for any of the recalled pet foods to be still on shelves in any store. It makes me severely mistrust the integrity and honesty of owners/managers of these stores. However, I don’t necessarily think that the FDA is to blame fo this problem. I may be wrong, but from what I’ve seen/heard, it seems like the FDA took all precautions and steps they could when they found out that there was a problem with the food. I just wish their website were more informative.
Becky, I completely agree with you that Menu Foods, and any other distributor of these tainted pet foods could have done more to prevent the magnitude of this problem. My post was mainly to say that I think it is inappropriate to blame this on any single political party, and most definitely on any other intentional contamination by cultures. Unless there is proof of any of this, we should not be doing any name calling.
I don’t necessarily think that it is the manufacturer’s fault that the pet food was contaminated. However, I do think that it is their fault for not notifying people earlier and I don’t agree with the testing methods used (using animals to determine if the food is deadly). I think that it is important that we know what we are feeding our pets, and I wish this whole thing was over.
I just agree that all pet owners need to stay together and we shouldn’t be lecturing to anyone what the best food is for our animals. We are all doing the best that we can with the resources we have. While what a lot of us feed our pets isn’t what some feel is the “best” food for them, we have put our faith in the fact that the food is completely safe. It is no pet owners fault that this happened. I’m just flat out lucky that my kitties didn’t get sick, like all those other pets out there did. It’s just sad that sometimes even though we are doing what we think is best, that things like this happen.
I also don’t think that it’s fair to “yell” at people because they can’t afford to spend thousands of dollars on getting blood tests for their pets. My cats have gotten all of their shots, on time and go to the vet for their check-ups. But I don’t have over a thousand dollars for vet bills for treatment of contaminated food caused by somebody else. I have enough money to take care of and maintain the good health of my two wonderful cats, but I don’t have the money to fix a problem caused by contaminated food.
I know that there are a lot of people that are struggling to get treatment for their pets. Does anyone know if the pet food companies are helping with these bills, or if they are simply reimbursing the vet bills of people that lost their pets? I would like to help out if I can and if anyone knows of any way that I can, please let me know.
Julie,
I too have the same problem with my cat. Took him to the vet, they wanted to do an ultra sound, not enough funds, so resorted to taking fluid from his abdoman and sure enough he has some type of cancer in his stomach. Whether he is going to be 14 or not, he has been a very healthy child of mine. Always up to date on immunizations, very energetic and playful, and this just stumps me! I have known Siamese to live to be 17 to 20 years old! What happened to my child? Can it be the food? All of it? Now it is just boiled chicken and rice for the last 2 kids of mine who will be 16 and 14, of which are both siamese. These cats are my children, my life and it hurts to see them go whether it be from some political issue or just because of age. But whatever the reason, I just wish they would all go peacefully! No one or no animal should have to leave this planet in suffering and pain. And to try asnd decide when is the best time to put a child(cat) down to rest is a very difficult decision when they still eat good, jump up and down and play, but yet day by day their stomach is filling up with a poisionous liquid. When do you do it? That is my hardest decision to make. When?
Thanks for sharing your story.

Today on the FDA’S website the is a complete list of all recalled pet foods. It carries today’s date.
Go to http://www.fda.gov and look under hot topics,(top right of your screen)click on pet food recall. I hope that this will help someone. They have menu foods, delmonte, sunshine mills, all of them are finally in one place!God Bless you all and good luck with your babies.By the way, I feed my cats Purina Kitten Chow (dry) and so far they haven’t gotten sick.Hopefully it will stay that way.

anybody who has foster cats and can’t afford their care should not be fostering them. I’m sorry to say this, but things come up in every animal’s life and you need to prepared to meet their needs monetarily. I have animals and I make sure I’m able to provide for their care at all times.
In response to Colleen, most of us are blue collar working class folks, but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t try to help out with the homeless pet problem.I doubt that any of us has a load of money put back just for animal care, but if you foster pets for a local rescue or shelter most of them can help with some of the cost for vet care, others may have a local vet that gives a pretty good discount for foster pets.I have never fostered, but I know people that has.I have however taken in a lot of strays and cared for them until I could find a home for them. The local vet knows what I do and he helps me as much as possible. He is very good hearted.I don’t have a lot of money, but does that mean that I shouldn’t feed or house one of God’s creatures? Some folks are on a fixed income and don’t have alot of money for vet bills, but thier pets are thier only companions.I’ve seen this mostly with the elderly.Should they not have that companion because they aren’t loaded?Maybe you should try being alone and living on social security. They really don’t draw that much, the love and companionship of a pet can mean alot to those folks.I also believe that acts of kindness(to people or animals) is doingGod’s work.If you do God’s work He will help you,and His help means more than any monetary holdings.God bless you all and if you are doing God’s work by acts of kindness,KEEP IT UP!
Our 15 year old cat became ill a couple of months ago and has full blown stomach cancer. If this food is responsible for that I want these cat food people sued and put out of business. It’s time these people learn a lesson.
I thought all of the foods with wheat gluten had been removed from the market. Am i wrong? or isn’t this the main ingredient causing death in cats? I just bought a couple cans of Friskies canned food for a kitten i am getting tomorrow, just to read the ingredients when i got home and saw wheat gluten as an ingredient. Friskies is not on the list!! Why not???

While many in the media continue to report “at least 16 deaths” from the pet-food recall, we have from the first realized that number was not an accurate reflection of the number of pet deaths. So we decided to try to find out for ourselves, and on March 18 — two days after the recalls were announced — we opened a database for people to report pet illness and death related to a recalled food product.
As of May 16 — two months since the first recall on March 16 — 4,867 pets (2,527 cats and 2,365 dogs) were reported as deceased to our PetConnection database. Total number of affected pets reported: 14,750. These are self-reported numbers, and should be in no way be considered confirmed or “official.” But if even a fraction could be confirmed, they show deaths far exceeding the FDA’s count of 17 or 18 “confirmed” pet deaths, most of whom died in a manufacturer’s feeding trial.
The FDA itself is now suggesting higher numbers. In an alert posted to the FDA’s Web site on April 27 (but one we couldn’t find until April 30), the FDA says:
As of April 26, 2007, FDA had received over 17,000 consumer complaints relating to this outbreak, and those complaints included reports of approximately 1950 deaths of cats and 2200 deaths of dogs.

I have country cats that are mostly wild, although I can pet them. I normally feed them Purina Cat chow which IS the best. I switched twitched to Nunn Better chow to save a little money and it made all of my cats deathly ill, vomiting, lethargy, third eyelid, etc. Even my chickens won’t eat it or my fish in my pond!! This food is not good for consumption, in my opinion.
