FAQ: Pet Food Recall of March, 2007

Tuesday March 20, 2007
Updated 3/21/07 3:15 p.m. ET

Menu Foods, which manufactures private label pet food in Canada for retailers like Wegmans and Walmart, and certain foods for companies such as Nutro Natural, Science Diet, and Iams, has announced a "precautionary recall" of cat food and dog food, which includes 42 brands of cat food alone. Needless to say, this recall has stunned thousands of cat and dog owners, especially those who have routinely fed one or more of the recalled products. This FAQ should help to clear the confusion and to answer some of your questions.

Falluk, your spam comment under such a serious subject is inappropriate at the least. It has been marked as spam and will be deleted.

I used one can of Paws. Is that enough to cause a problem? Cat was displaying some symptoms long
before the recall and before using the one can of Paws.
Vet saw her last week prior to recall.

Questionz: How do you find on the can the date of the
manufacture? See where it is “best if used by 2008″
but not the manufacture anywhere on can. Hints please.
and thanks.

You can read complete details, including all recalled brands, numbers and “best before” dates, at:

http://www.menufoods.com/recall/product_cat.html

That may not be a link…if it isn’t, paste that whole item into your browser’s “destination” box!

BJM,

I am (as we type) updating the FAQ and that question is included.

Steven Barr,
Good to see you here again. FYI, that information is included in the FAQ. Have you read it yet? It made more sense to me to have all the questions and answers together on one page that could be frequently edited, rather than to have them scattered throughout several blog comments and forum discussions.

I tried to print out the listing of recalled food
but the red print will not come through. Why isn’t the listing in black ink? I have 2 Dogs and 11 Cats
and it looks like just the cats are involved–a few
small cans of Special Kitty. I’m assuming that the dry Dog and Cat foods are safe.

Thank you.

Philena, I am in the process of creating a printable list of the recalled foods, which will be in black font. It will take some time, though, as it is in conjunction with an Index I’m creating that will pull together the major news about this pet food recall.

My kitty died about a week or so ago, after eating Special Kitty canned food from WalMart. It was not an easy death and she suffered.

Who do I report this to at Menu Foods? I am a senior citizen and she had been by my side for over ten years. She was like one of my children.

I think that there are probably many more sick or dead pets that people have not reported.

Hi there, Just wanted to say that I appreciate the information. I have two Chihuahuas.. so to say the least I make sure to feed them vet approved foods (hopefully those are safe.. i need to check the list..). On a food related topic… is there any proof that rasins are toxic to dogs? I got a few scary e-mails on the topic.
