I read on MSNBC that the Nutro Natural Choice line has been recalled. However, they just listed entire brands and did not specifiy which particular products were recalled. Franny, can you look into this, please? I’m tired of playing Russian Roulette with my kitty’s diet. Also, if you could give us all some advice on how to feed our cats ourselves (i.e., raw diet or cooked meats or whatever) that would be much-appreciated! Thanks!
I agree that multiple reports on recalls sometimes contain misleading or inaccurate information. The fact is that Nutro officials were notified by Menu Foods on April 10th that the China wheat gluten had been added to other products. At that time, Nutro decided to recall ALL of their products which contain wheat gluten. Here's the scoop, straight from the Nutro web site:

- A dozen of the Nutro Max Cat Gourmet Classics canned varieties were recalled, regardless of date of manufacture.
- All Nutro cat pouch products were recalled, including both Nutro Natural Choice Complete Care and Max Cat products.

Thanks so much for replying! Your response has really helped.
Still, I know this recall has really opened mine and others’ eyes to the importance of carefully reading ingredient labels and not taking it for granted that the pet food manufacturers and the FDA are looking out for our furry friends. We’re still going to look into a raw diet, though, as that seems to be the best option.

I’m confused as to your comment; “In the meantime, I continue to read all cat food labels and avoid all of those products with wheat gluten as an ingredient.”
I understand that wheat gluten can sound scary in your cats good because that’s how the melamine got into the recalled products, but I think that you may be putting your energies in the wrong direction. IIRC, all of the contaminated wheat gluten came from China, all of it had melamine or derivatives in it (which is *not* approved by the FDA or anyone else for animal or human consumption). Wheat gluten is an ingredient in a lot of pet food, and there is a great deal of it that comes from the US. It has been used [wheat gluten] without incident for the past 20 or so years, and is not the cause of the recalls. Personally, I think it would be more beneficial to find out which companies actually produce and package their own pet foods, use ingredients in the US, and can directly oversee the production and packaging of their products.
For me and my “furry children”, I intend to avoid any companies who pay other companies to produce and package the pet food they sell. Obviously, they cannot fully trust the people that are making and packaging their product (like Menu Pet or American Nutrition) to provide safe and healthy food for our pets, so how can we trust those pet food companies to continually make safe foods for our pets?
Yeah, it’s scary as more and more foods make their way onto the recall list, but it could also be seen as a wake up call. I spend a lot of energy and time to find out what’s in my food, why wasn’t I doing the same for my four-legged family members? There have been big changes in my household because of this, and I think it could be turned into a positive thing if my little ones are eating better and healthier because of it.
