Thanks to a reader for emailing this information from Natural Balance Pet Foods:
Breaking Voluntary Recall News: Thursday, April 26th, 2007
I have been purchasing the recalled cat food flavor every week, along with other Natural Balance canned foods, and other premium cat foods, which I routinely use and recommend. There is other breaking news today, which I will relay later, but first I need to hug and apolgize to my cats for unwittingly endangering their lives. I am simply furious right now.

Our canned food manufacturer, American Nutrition, from Ogden Utah, just informed us that they are recalling all canned products made in their plant that contain rice protein concentrate. American Nutrition continued by telling us that they added this ingredient to four of our canned products without our knowledge or consent. The four products involved are:
- Chicken Formula Canned Dog Food 13 oz
- Lamb Formula Canned Dog Food 13 oz
- Beef Formula Canned Dog Food 13 oz
- Ocean Fish Formula Canned Cat Food 3 oz & 6 oz
To make sure that this does not happen in the future, we are demanding from each of our co-manufacturers daily production record of all of our formulas before they are shipped to us and written certification of NO rice protein or any deviation of our formulas. We have reviewed all of our other products and determined that they are free of rice protein concentrate and that all of our other product labels are accurate.

There is, however, a new urgency. The chemicals implicated in the pet deaths, identified as melamine and cyanuric acid, were found in protein ingredients used in human foods, ranging from bread to veggie burgers. One of the most common of these ingredients is wheat gluten.

I think most people would be willing to pay more for food that is entirely made in our country. There is no need to import any food from China. Now we have to worry about our own food tainted as well!
I’m with you on this one…I fed the Ocean Fish to my babies yesterday (before this news broke). I am simply furious, and now very scared! I’ve been telling everyone I know to avoid ALL (wheat, rice, corn, soy) grain glutens & grain protein concentrates thinking “well, it’s overly-cautious, but at least I know the foods are 100% safe if they don’t contain any glutens”. Now, we find out this stuff is being added “secretly” to cans?! As pet owners, looks like we can’t even make an informed decision by looking at the label. There’s simply no good way to avoid the risks unless you home cook which is not a realistic option for everyone.
This is unreal! we love our pets, they are our lives.why can’t they make the foods in this country??
what about our foods? i wonder what will be next? something really smells bad here
