Video How to Bathe a Cat

Tuesday May 8, 2007
Oh, how I wish this video, along with Franny's excellent tutorial about how to Bathe a Cat With a Minimum of Fuss were available the first time we attempted to bathe Rocky. Sadly, no such luck.

We made all the mistakes - we were not ready with our supplies, we tried to use the bathtub instead of the sink. We had all of us (three people, one cat) crammed into the bathroom at one time, shouting "I'M BLEEDING" "WHERE"S THE TOWEL?" "IN THE DRYER" "WHERE'S THE CAT" "I'M STILL BLEEDING" while the cat made a break for it.

Rocky, though, being a resourceful cat, dried himself using the fabric on all of the furniture, rugs, and bedding in the house, soaking them and drying himself in the process. He spent the rest of the day lounging in the sunshine and grooming, pausing only to give us a look of utter disdain every so often.

But really, if your kitty needs a bath, don't let my story deter you. We didn't know what we were doing, and would have had much better luck using these wonderful instructions. Read them, watch the video, check everything twice, double check your supplies, print the tutorial, hang it on the wall (in a plastic page protector) and make sure your area is calm, mellow, and comfortable. If you follow Franny's advice, I guarantee your cat bathing experience will be great, for you and for your cat.

One detail I noticed in the video is the rubber mat in the bottom of the sink. It’s the kind that holds firmly with suction cups.

Kitty will be much more calm and less wiggly if her feet aren’t slipping on the bottom of the sink. Excellent idea!

YOU MIGHT THINK THIS IS A STRANGE THING TO DO. BUT I GET INTO THE SHOWER WITH “TURDKITTY”, TO CLEAN HIM THIS HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE BEST WAY FOR ME TO CLEAN OUR CATS.

Milo loves having baths, i get in the tub with him, his daddy holds his head out of the water’s way and I pour water on him from a jug. He doesn’t run or cry. Just loves the lathering process & waits to be done.

I took my cat to the vet to have her backside cleaned. When I picked her up the bill was $78! After I hit the ceiling the ladyshowed me they had to give her general anesthesia. Now does any one think I would try to bathe a cat?

i think it is necessary to bath cats especially if you have someone allergic to cats.My cats shed a lot of fur…

Both my cats do not like baths.

However I have developed technique for each individual cat.

Little baby tub container with warm soapy water- gentle shampoo for babies is fine.

Close bathroom door. Make sure you have towels to dry cats.

some cats hate water. So have a supply of wash clothes to wipe 2 for an adult cat to wash and bath.

My other cat is ok and I rinse her with water to get rid of excess fur. She does not mind bath…but eventually gets impatient…..

Indoor cats should get bath…so that they don’t smell.

I would advise a bath for cats once a month.

When a new family member arrives I give them a bath. I’ve always put the cats in the bath tub with a plastic laundry basket turned upside down so they can cling to it if they would like to, this seems to help calm them. Miss Kitty’s last bath was 10 years ago she is 16 years old. I recently gave her sister Princess who is 17 years old(she has been deaf for the past 1 1/2 years or so) a bath and she loved it. I think she did not mind because she could not hear the water.
