A Different Way to Celebrate Mothers Day
Thursday May 10, 2007
Sunday we will celebrate Mothers Day in the United States. Millions of people will spend a fortune on candy, flowers, and other gifts to honor the women who gave birth to them. In recent years, I have honored my Mom's memory by donating to my local cat rescue toward the spaying of a stray or feral cat, perhaps one that has been a mother far too many times. You see, I know that thousands of unwanted kittens will be born on that day, and thousands more will be euthanized, or die of neglect in some wayside alley. Thousands of mother cats will watch their kittens die from disease, if indeed the mother cat survives the birth experience. And eventually, after bearing one litter after another, these mother cats will wear out and die. Please, if you have a whole female cat, get her spayed. It's the kindest gift you will ever be able to give her.

I think that’s a lovely gift & a good thought for mother’s day.
What an awesome idea. I think I will donate 25.00 in my mom’s name to our local humane society for them to use in spaying items needed. They perform the service right there. Thanks for the grand idea, Franny.
That is so much more meaningful than buying another gift that will just clutter up their house. That would be great for other holidays too!
As a mom who loves cats, i would be very happy if my kids acted on your excellent suggestion!
