Cat Names - What's in a Name?

Unique Ways for Choosing Names for Our Cats
We Syufys have always been pretty eclectic in choosing cat names, and more imaginative sometimes than at others. On a couple of occasions we goofed on gender when selecting a cat name; thus Figero became Figueroa, who subsequently gifted us with our first "career cat," Tinker, who ruled our home for seventeen years. (Tinker, incidentally, was named after the first Tinker, whom my husband claims he was raised by.) Arthur remained Arthur, however, as it didn't seem fair to change her name again, after changing it from Chablis (the name our allergic friend had given her).

Like many other people, we found the sources for various cat names in things around us, such as people, song titles, movies, and from serendipity, as in the case of our demised Shannon (pictured here), who was named after the park in which he was found (and subsequently had a street named after him). How did you choose your cats' names? Your comments are welcome!

(1) Anthony Bauman says:

Our rescued cats pretty much named themselves. One little blue kitten we found brought the comment from my wife “he looks like a little teddy bear”. So we have Bear. When a stray gave birth in our garage, the runt, a little tortie, developed a nasty smell from one ear. By the time we got her to the vet it was gone, but the name “Stinky” remains. “Squeaky” was named because her meow sounded like a squeaky door, “fatters” was the chubbier of two almost identical black cats, and “Baby” was a tiny stray that never got much larger than her kitten size. My daughter has “KC” (Krazy Cat) and “Patches” (describes her coloration perfectly.) and “Twinkie” (a little orange tabby with a white belly)
(We also have a dog called “Dufus” again a perfect description)

(3) Dawn says:

I volunteer at an animal shelter and bring home foster kittens. So far I’ve stuck with the themes of females are named for songs and males are named for television characters. For the girls I’ve got Maggie May (Rod Stewart), Layla (Derek and the Dominos), Ruby (Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town, Kenny Rogers), Lucy (Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Beatles?), Penny Lane (Beatles) and Roxanne (The Police). For the boys, I’ve got Maxwell Smart (Get Smart), Archie Bunker, Barney Miller, Mr. T, and DJ Jazzy Jeff (from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air). I’m still waiting for a Vinnie Barbarino to come into my life, but he’ll have to be something special.

(4) Tracy says:

We have Meescha, after Mescia Barton. She stared in THE O.C. I know I have her name spelled differently but that is who she is named after. Our Meescha is slender and very pretty just like the other mescia.

(5) Catosmama says:

Cato came to stay with us and didn’t pay any rent, so she is named after “Kato” Kaelin but spelled differently to reflect her feline heritage :) When I brought Maxy home, I thought he looked like Max and reminded me a bit of Max from One Life to Live :P I didn’t say anything to Bob, who looked at him and said right away he looked like a Max.

(6) SAM says:

Our cat’s name is Bruiser. We think he’s a Maine Coon. Bruiser’s name fits him perfectly because he’s pretty much an 18lb wrecking ball! Clobbering his way through our home. :)

(7) Lori says:

I named my cats after the names that make me think of sweet children-Cody-(RIP Codester), Tyler and Lola.

(8) tanya says:

I named my cat Eartha Kitty after the unforgettable Eartha Kitt, the *ultimate* Catwoman.

(9) E says:

I always tell people it is a family name thing. I am E, so they are O and U. And then there is Y, who is not a real vowel, but a little stuffed kitty.

(10) JC says:

My husband is a huge sci-fi fan so our cats are all named after sci-fi characters. “Dax” is one of the boy’s name, named after a symbiont from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Our two girls “Ezri” and “Lela” are eached named after two of the Trill hosts for said symbiont. “G’Kar” is our other boy, named after an alien creature from Babylon 5 as he bears a stricking resemblance!

July 6, 2007 at 8:42 pm
(11) Vic says:

Litter mates, the boy was so very dark brown that we named him Chocolate…not knowing he would be a beautiful black cat. His black and white sister was named Angel, since my dad had recently passed.

(12) Susan says:

Well Whiskers got her name from her whiskers, She has very long whiskers.
Squirt got his name because he was so tiny when my husband found him. Tony our orange tabby, because my husband said he looks like Tony the tiger. Emerald got her name from her emerald green eyes. And last is Pumpkin an orange and white tabby that was found by my husband again (do you see a pattern forming with the husband)just last fall which the pumpkins were out by than.
Now my cats have nick names too.
Whiskers - Whisky and old girl
Squirt - Squirty and little boy
Tony - baby boy
Emerald - Emmy
Pumkin - Kung Fu Kitty

(13) jetgirl86 says:

I thought Jones the cat in the movie “Alien” was the smartest of the entire crew, but I couldn’t give a girl a boy name. I decided Ripley was smart, sweet, tough and stubborn - just like her namesake Ellen Ripley, so that’s how she got her name!

(14) T.McRae says:

I have 4 cats, Otis a VERY LARGE(not fat) 8yr old white cat with orange patches, who once would sleep in shoes as a kitten.. Named after Otis from the movie Milo & Otis. My daughter loved it at the time. Bessie a 9yr old black and white cat who is tiny but FAT. She was named at the humane society as a kitten. Timber, is a 7yr old black tabby, you only see his stripes in certain light. Otherwise he looks black/dark chocolate but his undercoat is white. Never seen this and I’ve had cats all my life. A kitten that was found at a Provincial Pk as a stray for the 10 days we were there. He was so loving and affectionate and some kids weren’t nice to him. Soaked him through. He has that look of a black timberwolf actually. That knowing look. You’ve seen it. I named him that right away. And many people have been mystified by the way he looks at you. It’s strange. And my recently acquired stray kitten. A tiny grey tortoise-shell named Jazzy by my daughter cat the upon her first heat, became pregnant. A friend gave her to me to just keep an eye on. She is so loving and so am I so she has joined the family too. She is due any day now. And last but no longer mine was(my ex has him now) Milo, a 10yr old orange/white tabby named, like Otis, from the movie. And by the way I will not be adding another to our ‘cattery’ when the kittens arrive….I hope. lol

(15) angel says:

my three furry masters are greebo- all black with a white-tipped tail and yellow eyes, named for nanny ogg’s cat in the terry pratchett stories (though he’s nothing like the original greebo).
taxi is all black with light brown eyes, and when he was a kitten he had white tufts on the front of his ears like headlights.
grampa scratchy is over 10 years old and moved in 9 months ago- the other two still don’t get on with him and the old man never comes out of my bedroom… he’s covered in scars and his eyes are rheumy and one tooth is broken off and his ears are scalloped!

(17) Sue-q says:

My first two cats were named Miss Blue and Sassafras. Upon learning they were males they became Blue and “Fras”. A little black and white kitten dumped in our neighborhood after flooding in 1993 was named Chelsea by neighbors . My daughter insisted she have a middle name so she is Chelsea Rene’. Nicknamed Chelse, she has lived with us for 14 years. A stray tortoiseshell cat my daughter named La Petite Beh-Beh finally convinced us to adopt her when she showed up at our door sickly from the heat of a hot Missouri August and from delivering 3 kittens. We thought she had lost the kittens until she brought us a white kitty with black spots we named Furby and a white kitty with yellow tabby striped spots we named Rion (lion with a “r”). We lost our little Furby girl. Our little Rion was a loving little teddy bear of a cat my husband started calling Harry. He became “Harry the Bear”. He is a big boy weighing in at 16 pounds, who loves to climb up into my husband’s lap to get some much needed attention. With good food and veterinary care La Petite Beh-Beh flourished and a beautiful caramel color mixed into the yellow and black in her coat. She still hunts and her walk reminds me of a cheetah. Her nickname became Momma Cheetah or M.C. for short.

(18) Phila says:

My guys (and gals) basically named themselves, also -
Luciano - luxurious, deliberate, dignified
Woody/Pudster - hefty “guy” cat who thinks he’s a dog
Gloria (after G. Steinem) - assertive and vocal
Sweetums - well, sweet!
Stiltskin - obese brother of Rumples (adopted out)
Shadow - elusive!
Princess/Baby - hypersensitive petite kitty with tiara markings
Sapa/Luna - Lakota for “Black” - all-black with a white crescent moon on her chest
Ladylove - total lover alpha cat
Shakti - twice a mom, independent
Buster - assertive tom
Teardrop - has a black teardrop on her nose

(19) G says:

Sasha and Casey..Sasha as a sort of tribute to our cat who died 6 months earlier ,named Tasha. And Casey started out as CS, named for the Comfort Suites Motel where he was found in the parking lot during a terrible ice storm. After a few days CS became Casey.

(20) Kendra says:

I have 2 brothers that are solid black. We named them Blue and Grey for two reasons. No.1 - Black cats need colorful names and No. 2 - I am from the south and my husband is from the north.

(21) Chloe (ckstar) says:

Tank, my first cat, was named by his foster mom. I just recently found out why. Out of his three littermates, Tank was the biggest and loved to romp and wrestle with his brothers. Nabi, my second cat, was originally named Clementine by her foster mom, but we thought the name was more befitting of an orange kitty (she’s a brown tabby). We named her Nabi, the Korean word for butterfly, because she looked so tiny and delicate, yet she really did “fly”, climbing and running and rarely resting.

July 8, 2007 at 10:07 am
(22) Leora says:

Well let’s see where to start..my oldest whose name is “B” is shoert for Itty-Bitty Little-One Peanut. He was the runt of the litter so I gave all the names that meant small. Then theres ‘Rocky’ he was the only survivor of a litter, the we have ‘Stuart’ a tabby that reminded me of the tabby in the movie stuart Little. Now we have the most unusal name “Holdin” he is bottle baby and when he was 6 days old he was so hungery that he crawled right out of my arms andlanded on the floor. My husband told me that he wold never learn to walk beacause I was always holding him..so I named him ‘Holdin’ cute huh, my baby is called ‘Jersey’ he reminds me of a jersey cow..well that’s all I have. And that is enough..

(23) CatzGraham says:

My friend, who is a pianist, was hoping to find the “purrfect cat” to be his feline companion. As it turned out I was able to rescue a tiny bit of black and white fur with more fleas than fur. I had the kitten checked at the vet, cleaned and de-fleaed and brushed and fluffed and presented my friend with the purrfect cat for him. When I handed the black and white kitten over to his new guardian I said …”Here … is Steinway” … my friend prompty fell in love with the kitty named after his piano and who was black and white just like piano keys.

(25) Jennifer says:

My oldest, whom I had to have put to sleep 2 days ago was named PeeWee…named after a clarinet player from the 50’s;Buckles was named that because that’s what a 3 year old chose;Tooker was named because I ‘took her’ from my mom, who was not wanting another cat;and my baby, Angel, was named because she is just that.

(26) Jan Anders says:

we have 6 cats so there are various names & various reasons for the names but one stands out more. When Wolf (as my son called it) was about 6 weeks old, I accidently slammed to fridge door on it’s neck. It cought it next to the hinge & the kitten went into spasms. I grabbed it & ran to the vet. He said it looked like spinal cord damage & he was going to keep it on IV anti-inflammatory over night & see if he coould save it. The next morning I went in expecting to have lost the kitten. She was fine!!! But since she was a she, the vet suggested we change the name to maybe Fridge or Slammer. I chose Hope. It just seemed fitting.

(27) Cindy says:

One of my favorite cats name didnt ‘change’ as much as it ‘morphed’. She was born white with two little black ‘horn’s above her eyes — so she was named Blanca Diablo for white devil. As the black horns faded, she became Blanca Baby Girl — then BBG - finally Beebers. She was a lovely cat. Her sister who was the spitting image of her (aside from the fact that they both had one blue and one gold eye although they were opposite eye color on each of them and Beebers was not a true polydactyl cat, as her sister was) was called Blanca’s Evil Twin - which morphed into BET and she loves her name. (I think she thinks she’s named after Ms. Midler, since she sings alot like her, lol)

(28) Jacque says:

Our first cat, Shawnee, was named after the street we live on. She became such an important part of our lives, that whenever anyone noticed this, I’d simply tell them that she’s so important & special, that our street was named after her. She can be seen in the Cat Memorial section of this site.

Then, we have Sassy, who was named after the beautiful Sassifrass tree.

We also have Missy. She was almost named Misty, because of her coloring. But we decided on Missy, which really fits her personality.

July 11, 2007 at 4:53 pm
(29) KB says:

I recently found my first cat on the street I named her Edith. It started out as Edie Sedgwick (after Andy Warhol’s muse) because she is beautiful and draws attention to herself, much like her namesake…but I ended up getting stuck on Edith. She recently had kittens that I named Hyacinth (after a favorite Doors’ song of mine, “Hyacinth House”) and Ramona (random, but it fits really well)

(30) MSK says:

I live with my husband in my cats’ house. Yes, they act like the lord and lady of the manor and we are their humble human servants.
First, is my darling, Timo Houdini. A large black and white Tuxedo cat, named after Timo Hildebrandt (German Soccer Goalie) and Harry Houdini (the magician). Aptly so as he is never without his toy soccer ball and likes to do silly things like sneaking into the fridge when the door is swinging shut when he thinks no one is looking!!
My little girl is named Honey Buns(unofficial name: Miss Dior), a slender, light brown tabby with loads of model attitude and a trilling voice to match.

July 12, 2007 at 1:28 pm
(31) Kevin says:

My wife and I are both musicians (avocationally) so we used musical terms to name our cats Mezzo and Tempi. When we found out Mezzo is a girl we chose not to use the feminine form - Mezzi. Since Tempi is a plural form of the word Tempo we were only worried about her multiple personality disorder.

(32) Elizabeth says:

Our cat “Baxter” told me his name, and that was it!!

July 12, 2007 at 1:42 pm
(33) Kim says:

My two cats are named after mine & my husband’s birth cities. I was born in Shelbyville, IL; therefore our female cat is Shelby. My husband was born in Jacksonville, FL; therefore our male cat started out as Jackson but now shortened to Jack! But their nicknames are Baby Girl & Baby Boy since they are both our children!!

July 12, 2007 at 1:46 pm
(34) abbeysmom says:

Our latest addition was a little homeless kitten with very short legs. Hence, his name - Shorty! Now that he’s an adult, his legs are still kinda short so his name fits perfectly.

(35) Jimmy B says:

I adopted my Persian cat eight years ago from a breeder whose owner was Chinese and she had named her Little Moon. I wanted something that rhymed with Lassie and something to give her the dignity she deserved. So my best friend is named Tassie Belle.

(36) Patty says:

I named all my cats by their coloring…Tiger, Corky, Smokey and Whitey. I have two black cats that were given to me, Cleo (who has a white diamond shape on her chest) and Lucy who was named after a character in a movie my daughter liked. Two of my cats have since passed but the names suit them very well.

July 12, 2007 at 1:54 pm
(37) Maxy P says:

Emo is named for the Second baseman on Tulane University’s 2007 baseball team. Kat is short for Katrina which was her name when we adopted her & my sister refuses to call her that [her collar says Kitty Kat]. Stubbie is named so as she has a stubbed tail & my sister & nephew would call her that anyways & Lucky is named, as well, he is lucky we adopted him. [Stubbie & Lucky are kittens.]

July 12, 2007 at 1:55 pm
(38) Nicole says:

My first cat Cassie was named Cassandra after a very close old high school friend of my husband. She was killed in a really sad way (she left her purse atop her car and remembered after she left her waitress job one night. She pulled over to get it off her roof and someone hit her. The 911 operator who took the emergency call was her mother. :( The girl died.).

Since we didn’t have children, this was a way to pay tribute of sorts to his friend Cassandra and I call her Cassie or Cass now (unless she is in trouble or looking very beautiful that day, then it’s the full Cassandra).

My newest baby needed a name that rhymed (with ie sound at the end anyway) and I named her Holly since she is cute and there is a tv show with a girl of that same name.

July 12, 2007 at 1:58 pm
(39) TINA says:

When we brought our kitties home, they both cried together in the box standing on their hind legs and I commented to my husband that they looked like Salt & Pepper together. The names fit- one’s all white, the other is peppered with brown, black, grey. Our third kitty was a stray that my old boss, a DR., had the delight of finding on his back porch. His mother had wanted it after he told her about it but he had already promised the kitten to me. In honor of her name(Margaret) and the color of her wig matched the kitten’s fur, hence we call her Maggie. So much for creativity.

July 12, 2007 at 1:59 pm
(40) Jennifer Cavacas says:

Our cat “Chancey” was named for the extra chance she was given at life when my husband found her trapped upside down in a wall of a house that had burned. She was only about 4 weeks old and could not get out of the tight spot. We nursed her back to health and now she is a beautiful, neutered, 2 year old member of our family.

July 12, 2007 at 2:02 pm
(41) Jaime says:

We found one of our cats in December, and she was so nice, we figured she was someone’s pet. We called her “Turtle”, since she’s a tortie, never thinking we’d end up with her. Five years later, “Turtle” it is.

We also found a kitten in my father-in-law’s boat, which was parked at his house. We named her “Geneva”, “Eva” for short, because the boat had an Evanrude motor.

(42) maureen says:

En route home from the animal shelter with my 8 week old male kitten, I decided to stop off and show him to friends. He was happily running around their living room when their daughter arrived with her quite large dog. I thought oh no, one bite and my baby is a goner. But no, my little guy, my little tough guy, chased big doggie round and round the living room instead, and thus he acquired the name “Tuffy”. Tuffy is now 16 years old and has a 4 year old brother and a 1 year old sister.

(43) Nuria says:

I’ve always been fascinated by Russian names. When I rescued my male kitty, I immediately knew he would be named Vladimir, Vlad for short. About a month later, I decided to rescue another kitty, and bring her home as a playmate for Vlad. I chose Oksana because it was also Russian and because I thought it was such a beautiful name for such a lovely kitty. So I have my pair of Russian royalty, Vlad and Oksana

July 12, 2007 at 2:06 pm
(44) Shauna B says:

We got my first baby from one of my husbands friends and we named him only after we knew he was a boy and we saw him it took us a little while but we came up with Desert as he is a beautiful creamy sandy color then we got our other boy from another friend and again we found out what he was and had to see him. But with this one I wanted his name to kinda match Desert’s name so we went with Eclipse. He is mostly black with about a quarter of white. So we have Desert Eclipse!

July 12, 2007 at 2:07 pm
(45) Susan says:

When we apopted two black kitties whom we thought were brothers, one was named Puck from the mischieveous fairy from Midsummer Night’s Dream. The second was going to be named Huck from Huckleberry Finn. After a trip to the vet, Huck was discovered to be a girl and her name was changed to Peaseblossom which is another fairy from Midsummer Night’s Dream. We call her Peasie for short.

(46) sue says:

we started with Tsunami (her name from the animal shelter) and then added Calvin and Hobbes (even though they are girls). The next three brothers and sisters are Blaze (orange cat), Ranger (grey cat), and Gi-Gi (fluffy white cat). Last but not least, we have “Mixy” who looks like a combination of Tsunami, Calvin, and Hobbes. We love ‘em all!!

July 12, 2007 at 2:18 pm
(47) Lisa says:

We named our cats Gina and Tails. Gina was a tribute to an old dog, who is black and white like her. The dog is Georgie -> Georgina -> Gina.

Tails is nearly all white with a black tail. Hence the name.

We ran into a problem, though, because a friend pointed out that if you say them together, it sounds like an area of the body.

Gina. Tails. Ginatails.

July 12, 2007 at 2:19 pm
(48) Larry says:

My current cat was named “Sarah” because I had a male at the time that was named “Sam”. It just seemed appropriate that I was also involved with a local Historical Society, and the name “Sarah” came up as a historical spelling. She was found after being left at our local park and nearby to my workplace. Since we were involved with cleaning local parks throughout the city, we often had garbage in our dumpster that was eaten by hordes of Raccoons. Rather than leave her to their mercy, I took her home with me, and she became not only a very expensive found cat (it cost me over $700 to get her completely healthy), but also a super best friend and spoiled kitty. She is my little sweetheart!

(49) wendi says:

I found a stray coon cat right before Superbowl Sunday and with my Patriots in it, I decided to call her Boston. That year we won the Superbowl AND the World Series! Then I decided Boston needed a friend and I rescued a little tiger kitty with white feet and promptly named her Sox! They are my good luck charms!

July 12, 2007 at 2:29 pm
(50) Susan says:

Two of our cats are named after our “field hockey” heritage. I have been a high school coach for 11 years, my daughter had a FH scholarship and it’s still a big part of our family fun. Our first cat, given to us after my son’s cat, KG, died in a a fire that almost took his life, to is named Tag after a U of MD field hockey player who was my daughter’s idol. Our Maine Coon cat, originally named William Wallace after Mel Gibson’s character in Braveheart, is now called Gryphie, short for Gryphon- which is a popular brand of field hockey equipment. He’s a big galoot, but he is fearless. :) Our best buddy’s name is Texas. I know most people hate George W. Bush, but we are supporters of his and named Tex in honor of him. Please! No hate mail! Tex is the sweetest boy ever. He’s almost like a dog. We only let him outside when we are working in the yard and he’s always right by our side and if he’s not- he comes when we call. He’s really unbelievable. Thanks for letting me tell about my buddies!

July 12, 2007 at 2:32 pm
(51) Kathy says:

We found a small black kitten one evening. He had to spend the night in a crate in our car as we didn’t want to expose our other cats to any diseases before we got a chance to take him to the vet. He was named Subie after the place he spent his first safe night in (our Subaru Outback).

July 12, 2007 at 2:38 pm
(52) pj says:

Our tabby kitten was abandoned a brush pile, we first named her Rambo and found she was female - then changed her name to Rainbow. Nobody could remember the name so we decided to call her Tabby. Our two black cats were adopted from the shelter in Oct. 2002. We named them after two of the hurricanes that year. Isadore and Lili.

July 12, 2007 at 2:45 pm
(53) Betty says:

I generally give my cats human names, except for Shadow and Precious and Buster, who lives up to their names. (I’d shake my finger at Buster and tell him to “BE NICE to the other cats.”) LOL! I’ve got Hope, Gabby, and Pipsqueak~named by my Mom. He’s normally called Peepers.

July 12, 2007 at 2:49 pm
(54) CMB says:

How’s this for convoluted: my half drowned black and white kitten, separated from her mom and littermates in a summer thunderstorm, looked like an elegant guttersnipe once she dried off. I was reminded of the black and white costumed race scene in “My Fair Lady” and first thought she should be Eliza but couldn’t think of enough satisfying nicknames. So Eliza morphed to Emily (also know as Emu, Emmy, Emma Lee, etc.).

July 12, 2007 at 2:53 pm
(55) Brandy & the Zoo says:

We named our first cat Salem after the cat on Sabrina because we thought he was so cute & a smarta$$ and our Salem is all that. After her everyone became named after wrestlers and how they came was how they were named. For example: we had a boy & girl set so we named them Hunter & Chyna (who were together at the time) etc… Except Blade who was named after Wesley Snipes Vampire street fighter because he cut my mother real good and drew blood the 1st time we tried to cathc him. Now hes the happiest cat here.
And acourse they all have nicknames, Flair is sleepy and peeps instead of meowing so we call him peeper & sleepy.

(56) Taerie says:

Over the years I have rescued many stray cats. Most are named for either their coloring or personality. My first cat was Squeaker who only could make a squeaky noise when he tried to meow. Scamper cause he was always climbing onto everything, Mischief constantly tried to get into trouble, Smokey had a beautiful grey coat, Cuddles because I thought he might become friendlier–and he did. Nikki had a grey coat with silver swirls that reminded me of a mine with a silver or nickel vein in it. Sierra is a calico named for the mts. Topaz is a tortie who was a little gem that someone had tossed out on the road. Goldilocks was a yellow cat. Mittens is a tuxedo. Cinderella aka Cinder was found abandoned inside a cinder block. Eclipse is totally black. Rambo was always very rambuncous. Skitters is a baby I just recently adopted who was very skittish and scared of everything when I first met her. Phantom got his name cause his face coloring was similiar to the Phantom of the Opera mask. Ragdoll had celebral hypoplasia and was very limp when you picked her up. I also had Kirma, Ruffles, Muffin, Sheba who were named just cause it fit them. I was trying to think of a name for another stray when he may be laugh and the noise sounded like Pshah so that became his name.

(57) JoAnne says:

I have three cats: Punkin is a Siamese mix who my daughter adopted from the Humane Society. I fell in love with him so she gave him to me. He was 8 weeks old when she got him and he is now almost 14 years old now. I called her “Punkin” when she was a little one, so she named her kitty that name and I didn’t change it. Amber came to live with me two years after Punkin arrived. She is all black and has yellow eyes, so I named her Amber Eyes. She will be 12 years old in October. Baby will be 10 years old in September . He is a Tabby, and since he was the youngest of the three, and a tiny little baby when somebody at work gave him to me, I named him Baby Boy. I also have a green anole lizard named Spike, but he’s another story. . .

I named my cat Panther. He is black and since i have always been infatuated with big cats it felt like to me a good name.

(59) Sally says:

We currently have three wonderful cats in our household. Boogie (tabby) received this name because she was found as a tiny kitten in a relative’s barn with an eye infection, and my daughters said she had “boogie eyes”, so the name stuck. Our second, also brown tabby,is named L.S. (now) At first we had a pretty name for her after finding her in a Pizza Hut parking lot. It was Bianca, but a we got to know her & her personality , only one name fit her LS stands for “little S*#!” aka little stinker. The third (a gorgeous tortie) was found along the road as a 3 week old half dead baby, and her name is “Tazzy” for “Tasmanian Devil”. We like to call her “jazzy Tazzy”. She now rulees the roost! I’d have a houseful, but my hubby says three are enough - we shall see……. :)

(60) The Cat Wisperer says:

We have no kids, so our cats ARE our kids. So they all get real ‘human’ names. And we have found some real exotic names for a few.

Nicholai - ‘Nicki’ grey & white mix - Female - adopted her as ‘kitty’ and she easily adapted to Nicki
Julius - ‘Jules’ flame point siamese - Male - named after the Orange Julius for his orange markings.
Jenna - Black & White Tuxedo - Female - just liked the name
Alexi - ‘Lexi’ black & white mix - Male - this name got his attention
Contessa - ‘Tessa’ black & white mix, litter mate to Alexi - Female - she had a widow’s peak in her markings like a countess would have in transylvania.
Spencer - european tabby - Male - he came with this name and we kept it
Jesse Cole - solid black - Male - my husband gave him this name after Jesse James & Cole Porter

So, the next children will have equally unique names. And sometimes we go through a handful until we find one that sticks.

(62) megan darby says:

my family has several cats and all of the names were chosen in different ways. tom, for instance, became tom because he had a sister, who we named jerry, so they were tom and jerry. rocky, became rocky, because when he was a kitten a dog attacked him and he fought against the dog, much like sylvester stallone in the movies rocky. our dear cat sylvester also got his name from stallone. and last but not least the kitten that i am going to pick up in a few weeks got the name taz because of the tazmainaie devil on the old looney tune cartoons.

(63) Deanna says:

We had a litter birthed by a feral cat near our house. One was tailless, so we named him Eyeore from Winnie the Pooh. His brother was an orange tiger-stripe, so he became Tigger. Subsequent kittens have been named Piglet and Pooh to carry on the theme. We have also named a cat Sam when he was found at Sam Houston National Forest.

I have three cats. Bonnie started out as Belle, but since I had a hateful cousin by that name I changed it to Bonnie (short for Bonita).

Hannah came already named. I’m not sure how my friend who gave her to me got her name, however.

Raider is a gray-and-black tiger striped cat. When I got him I was a Raiders season ticket-holder and named him for the team.

Our first cat ‘Blossom’ came with her name attached. Our second cat came out of a box in front of a store…it took a while before the perfect name came to us….due to my addiction and devotion…our new little girl became ‘Starbucks’…she is a Maine Coon and it fits her well.

We have four kitties. Two huge Maine Coons (all black) named George and Ali, and two adopted females that I gave myself for Mother’s Day: Daisy May and Daffodil Pickles. (they started out Daisy and Daffodil because I love gardening, but my cats always inspire nicknames and funny accents in me.

(68) Jane Schum says:

After rescuing two sickly little kittens from such horrible, almost Stone-age conditions, I named them Fred and Wilma after the Flintstones.

Fred, a red tabby, and Wilma, a cameo tabby are now 4 years old. Friends and family love to ask about Fred and Wilma. I think they just like the sound of the names! Fred and Wilma moved into the 21st Century and live in luxury, happy and healthy!

(69) Kathy says:

Sometimes a name for a particular cat just jumps out at you.Like “Speedy” as something flew past me. Nimbus was named for her gray color. The newest name is Wilson. He is a stray among many I feed and chat with. I decided his personality matched the doctor on House perfectly. It can be very complicated naming a cat or any pet. As with a person, it will be their name for life.

(70) Celeste says:

Hello!

Frisbie came to us with that moniker at six months of age. And boy was it appropriate. We got him home from the shelter, and he flew. He used his hind legs to bounce off my husband and myself, the stove, bookcases, and anything else that stood still. In mid-air, with the bounce, he’d turn, and fly off! Eventually, as he got older, he stopped the mid-air stunts, but he moved with great speed and agility until the end of his life.

The cat who lives with us now was five when he came home with us from the shelter. His name –Butch. Because he was five, we felt he should keep his name, even though it doesn’t quite fit. We also call him “Love Muffin” and “Velvet Boy.”

(71) Karen says:

Our first two cats we named Griffin and Sabina after the characters in a book. Those cats we adopted that already had names seemed to fit, so didn’t change Max,Zachary or Charlie. Our foster kittens became Felix (B&W), Fritz, and Chomper (who like to bite) after at least a month of being nameless after which we decided we couldn’t give them up.

(72) Joy MacCue says:

We hadn’t named our abandoned kitty until one day my late husband came in and asked if everything was jake with the cat. (You have to be a bit older to understand that comment I think) As it was the day had been a good one so we named him Jake. He is a big love and my companion now all the time.

(73) Mommy to Frosty says:

My furry, four-legged, ray-of-sunshine found me! She crawled under the hood of my car one very cold February night and wasn’t discovered until 20 minutes later when we stopped the car and heard a funny sound. After a long struggle to get her untangled from the wires, it took my good-natured ex-boyfriend a while to catch her! She bolted from the cat and we chased her around a parking lot, with him on all fours calling, “here pusss pusss pussssss”. When we finally caught her, she was shaking, scared and very cold - that’s how she got the name Frosty! I love her to bits, she’s my spoiled little princess and totally an indoor cat now! :-)

(75) Debbie says:

Three of our first cats were named after anime characters (Asuka, Suzuko and Lan). We’re now down to two cats. Harley is a muted calico (blue-gray instead of black) and my hubby named her that because from behind, she reminded him of a harlequin. Gracie, our tortie, was just a name that I happened to be very fond of.

(77) Eva says:

I have been volunteering in the local shelter in 12 years. I fostered kittens, I walk dogs. I have 6 cats at home. One of them was on TV twice. She is special. Animal control found her 8 weeks old on the street and brought her to the shelter. Her front right leg was broken and had gangreen. The vet amputed the leg to save kitten’s life and she was on TV on PetPlace. After the show I was the one who took kitty home to take care of her after operation. I fell in love with the kitty. She was so loving! I could not bring her back to the shelter for adoption after she recovered. I loved her. She was on TV when she was 3 years old and I talked about adopting handicapped animals. I brought her as an example. She was sitting on the table in front of me while I was talking. I explained to people watching TV. My cat has only 3 legs so she leans… HER NAME IS “ILEAN”! LOL!
(not Eileen). People called the TV station and wanted to adopt her. They loved her name! But Ilean is my baby!
I love her

(78) Johanna says:

I got a cat from a lady who was dying from cancer. The cat had not had a lot of lovin’ in the past year and when I got her all she wanted to do was hide under the bed. I put her food and water under the bed and talked to her as often as I could. She would sneak out at night to use the litter box. She did not get friendly for about 3 months. I hadn’t really given her a name but finally I hit upon the name “UBK”. It stands for Under the Bed Kitty. She has since become the love of my life and now she spends most of her time on top of the bed. She is a sweetheart.

(81) Elaine Dunbar says:

My kitties have been named by their purrsonalities! Two of my cats already came to me with names which I chose not to change. The calico cats I have had were named old fashioned names- Molly & Suze. A darling male tiger cat was named Moses. Two white cats I have had were named Crystal and Tootie, alias ‘King Tut’!

(82) Anne says:

When I rescued a litter of kittens in 1995, the Beatles Anthology had just been released and there was a lot of talk about it on the radio. I was remembering listening to “Beatles A-Z” weekends on the radio with my sister. Two of the rescued kittens, tuxedo sisters, became “Freida” and Bettina” after Beatles fan club secretaries that were thanked by George Harrison in a Beatles Christmas message. Their brother was extremely emaciated when I first brought him home. My mother saw him and was very upset. His appearance was so disturbing that she could not bear to look at him. She would ask me every day, “How is Baby Orange”? (he’s a long-haired red (orange) tabby). The name stuck. He is now almost 12 years old and is still Baby Orange, big and beautiful after beating the odds and surviving. I always wanted to name a red tabby Seamus, like a red-haired Irishman, so when I brought a health-compromised 7-month old red tabby home from the shelter at which I volunteer, he became my Seamus. He is now a healthy 2 year old. His companion, who was a a semi-feral kitten when rescued by a coworker, will be 2 years old this month. I named her Veronica after the Elvis Costello song (”You can call me anything you like, but my name is Veronica”). She is a very intelligent and headstrong tortie, happy and healthy after once being a starving “lost” flea-infested kitten.

Our third cat is Frankie we named hime that becauseat one time it looked like his eye were going to turn blue. His eyes never did turn blue but we kept the name after old blues eyes.

(86) TR says:

My daughter named her kitten Piercy, which i thought was a terrible name, so when she came to live with me i renamed her Clyde, after a little girl in the Highlander cartoon. My young son named his cat Princess Commando, for reasons only he understands. Then i had the great idea of naming them for movies that came out in their birth year. Thus, Truman, who was born in 1998.(Mulan was also considered) But somehow the other cats wound up with these names: Sonya, Gabrielle,J.R., Little Yu, and Slim Shady!

(87) Brenda says:

I had been looking at cats at the local no-kill shelter for a few weeks. I put an application in on one black kitty and was waiting for approval. I called after a few days and found out the shelter closed for two weeks for Christmas. I was very dissappointed, but figured it was best because I was flying to Dallas to spend Christmas with family. Denver was hit with an outrageous snow storm that dumped 3 feet of snow on the runways (and everything else), so my trip to see family was cancelled. Then I got a call from the shelter, they opened back up and were calling people to come down and pick up their new family members. I plowed through the snowbanks to pick up my new buddy, in my two wheel drive car, and named him Dallas.

My daughter found my cat on my doormat. It was raining and starting to get cold. I was ill at the time, and he slept near me on the couch. We tried to find the owner but never did. He had not been well taken care of so my daughter gave him a bath and took him to the vet. His name is Matt or Mattie. It turns out that he is a Red Point Siamese Cat which we didn’t know when we found him outside my door. He has been my companion and friend ever since.

(89) Kattzyze says:

When I was delivery driver for an auto parts store, one of the customers was Evergreen Cemetery. There were 6 or 8 stray kitties hanging around that the maintenance guys would feed. I had just recently lost the sweetest cat in the world (Sweet Scratchy) and I had plenty of room in my heart to love another cat. One of the maintenance guys told me one of the cats just had kittens, and he would “catch” one for me when they were old enough. So soon he brought me a little scruffy, scrawny, very scared kitty. So of course I had to name her–Evie. She has since grown up to be the most beautiful, long-haired, fluffy-tailed kitty in the world.

(90) Barb says:

Years ago I was feeding a beautiful calico outside my home that had been someone’s pet and was abandoned. I finally was able to “catch” her and bring her in. After a trip to the vet for spaying & shots - I brought her back home to live out her life as an indoor cat. Well, for a whole week she hid under our sofa, only coming out to eat, drink & use her litter box (good girl! I named her “Sophia” (sofa-girl). She soon became a loving and trusting cat - for 15 yrs.

Maximillion Casanova Houdini Pussus Tabbus Cattus enriched our lives for fourteen years. His name evolved over the years as he demonstrated his abilities: love, escapism, tabby markings, and being a gentle giant to everyone. To this day, he is sorely missed. We miss you on the bed, but may you play eternally among the catnip plants that you loved to sleep upon when they were newly arrived in your home!

(92) Sue says:

Our six month old black male kitten was renamed by our neighbors, and the new name suited him so well even the vet used it!
It all came about one Sunday when they were making their Sunday dinner and had taken a whole leg of lamb out of the oven to ‘rest’, when a black fur ball, half the size of the scorchingly hot meat appeared at their open kitchen window, lifted the meat off the counter and disappeared into their back yard. The whole family followed in hot purrsuit (forgive the pun), only to see the meat being dragged over a six foot fence but a very determined cat with a mean look in his eye.
I was alerted to what was happening by the chorus of the kittens new name…
Little S**T!
He lived to a very decent age, living up to his new name right to the last, and I hope, where ever he is now, he is still causing as much love and laughter as he did in this life.

(94) Susan says:

Our 13 year old male cat did not have a name until he was neutered when my husband remarked “He used to be a stud, but now he’s just a dud” and Dudley finally had a name. We named our crazy calico ‘Simka’ (wrong spelling I know) after Latka’s wife in the old ‘TAXI’ tv series. Later I found out it means party or celebration in Yiddish and it suits our ‘party animal’ perfectly.

Lastly is Tigger, an orange tabby whose ALWAYS causing trouble of some sort.

Our first cat was named Charlie by one of the riders at the stable where he was left. The second a grey cat was named Garcia (usually called Garcie)after Gerry Garcia whose #1 hit was A Paler shade of Grey. When we got Simon, we narrowed it down to two names we all liked but couldn’t agree on one so wrote each name on a piece of paper, put them on the floor and let Charlie pick the name. Andy’s (our fourth guy)name was picked in the same way by Simon. Charlie and Garcia are both gone now but Simon and Andy are still with us and give us great joy.

(101) David says:

My first kitty after grad school came to me from the manager of the apt. complex in which I lived. She was alergic to cats and had both a cat in the office as well as one at home. I got the one she had at home. She had named this gorgeous lavender point Himalayan “Gladys.” I thought it didn’t suit her at all, and she didn’t respond to me when I said her name. I decided to let her choose her own name and over a couple of weeks kept waiting to see her react to a name when I said it. One day when she was being moody, I told her she was being as mercurial as Carmen, (the character from Bizet’s opera), and she immediately turned and looked at me as if to say, “Oh, did you say something to me?” The name stuck, and she showed signs of loving her name.

(103) Susan Worthington says:

We too had a gender mishap when “Allie” strolled up our alley and adopted us. “She” was a sweet and beautifully symmetrical tabby. However, when we went to the vet for exam and shots…surprise…Allie became Alfred. In fact, he grew into such a regal being that his name became Sir Alfred of Worthington. Of course he rules the roost. And the name is so appropriate that all of our friends call him Sir Alfred.
Our daughter has a middle-aged bad boy named Tugger. After Tugger’s senior companion (Bear) had died, a feral cat deposited several kittens under their deck. The next morning there was only one kitten remaining. Mama was gone, so they took the kitten in. Within days it looked so much like Tugger, they named it Mini-Me. He was an absolute clone of Tugger (who never goes out and supposedly could not have fathered the kitten anyway). Now that Mini-Me is grown, they look more alike all the time. Soon I’m not sure they’ll be able to tell them apart.
Aren’t cats wonderful? They add so much to our lives. A little loving from a cat can make your troubles evaporate.

A kitty shower for my newly acquired kitten turned into a cat-naming party. A list of favorable names was given the guests and while they were considering what her name should be, she spied a tiny spider on the hearth and was playing with it when everyone suddenly agreed she should be known as “Muffy” (Little Miss Muffet). Being a Ragamuffin breed, Muffy was the ideal name even though it wasn’t on the list.

My son and his girlfriend in Spain adopted 2 feral stray tiny sibling kittens which they called Salt & Pepper at first. As they gradually tamed them and handled them more, the cats named themselves - they are now Sassy (she’s white, fluffy, blue-eyed and gorgeous and flaunts her beauty) and Brambles (he has brown balls)! (Brownballs, brownbles, Brambles -to protect innocent ears). He is smooth-haired, blue-eyed, cream with faint tabby points and is “my Spanish mate” handsome cat. When I go visit them and leave my own UK cats (Fred, Stanley and Tess) behind I know I’ve got 2 little furry friends waiting at the end of my journey.

(115) kostina says:

When we adopted our female tabby, her name was Blackfoot, presumably for her HUGE black feet. But once we got her home an interesting character trait surfaced. Apparently she had not received a lot of affection prior to joining our family and when she wanted pets she would tuck her head down and charge! I joked that she nearly bowled me over like a bulldozer, and the name Dozer has stuck.

We adopted a beautiful black male cat at the same time. He came to us as Mr. Cuddles, which although is a perfect name for his nature, it didn’t quite jive with our senisbilities. We were playing fetch with him one day with one of his favirite furry mice and he started to box my hand while I was holding the mouse as if my hand were a rhythm bag at the gym. We had recently watched Clint Eastwood’s Every Which Way You Can and joked that Mr. Cuddles was really Tank Murdock from the movie and he instantly became Tank.

So now we have Tank and Dozer. Out vet thinks we named them that because we’re fans of the Matrix movies. We are, but our kitties got their names on their own.

When I got my cat her name was Laces because she loved shoe laces. I immediately noticed that she was very loving and so I renamed her Lovey and it fits perfectly.

(117) weesiepoo says:

i received my first cat about 4 years ago and now have a house full1 the first one, a little tiny grey girl with a bloody back foot, was outside my house at bedtime and meowing her head off which prompted my young son to tell us he could not sleep because of the cat meowing.i thought he was making excuses, but my gf went outside and called for the kitty, and sh ran around the house and bound into her arms. she brought her in to me to see her state and what sex she was. i was sick in bed and she crawled on my chest, laid on her side, and began to knead my chin. next thing i knew, i had a kitten. i could not think of a name and was calling her LGK, for little grey kitty. i was in the shower and the name deshie came to mind. now i call her deshie moo or princesspurbaby of kitty two stepping. she is very regal and independent, except when she sees my bare skin, then she has to dance.

then came a lynx point from a soldier going over seas to war, his name was king, but i hated it. i watched him for a while and the name cyrus popped into my head. i also call him handsome, fatty boy, and truck because he has the biggest pur i have ever heard.

then came trey. he is an orange and white big boy i got from a shelter. my son wanted to look at a straight marmalade kitty, no white, but it scratched and bit him when the volunteer handed him to my son. she offered us a different orange boy. my son was angry and i said no, i said yes to be polite…and she handed this 6 month old chunk of orange and white, and i looked at everyone and said, ‘this is my cat’. end of story. trey just seemed to fit. he is trey trey love or my boyfriend.

then, through various exploits, i came to own army-a mackerel tabby with nose cancer i saved from some mean dogs.she is army colors

rua is a marmalade from an seizure of an animal hoarders house. he had a black brother i named deagan, but adopted out. rua is red and deagen is black in gaelic.

pheobe is a then 14 year old dilute calico that was abandoned when it’s owner moved. she is still with me at 17 years old. she is a cantankerous old thing, but still does the sucky thing on my shirt, like a baby.

topper is a tux boy a coworker of my gf passed to us because he was sick and needed nursing.

flash and zoe are lynx point meezers. flash named to match my two turtles thunder and lightening. zoe after zoe on sesame street. i always sing the zoe starts with z song to her.

and now we just took in three more, weird coincidence, lynx points we have named georgia since she is a choc lynx-get it, georgia brown, peaches because it came to mind with georgia, and suede for his super soft fur and rich brown points. two of these have homes lined up.

in my few short years, i have also fostered or lost to illness such babies as tisconni-sconners for short, louellen, damascus-macky, patch, simba, harley, inky, binky, dinky, spot, scout, journey, pattycake, abbey babby, dusty rose, and romeny.

My cats told me their names. Jack - Just Jack(RIP) was my first cat and he told me his name just before I met him. Maxwell told me his name the day I went to pick him up (Maxwell’s Silver Hammer). Lil Girl Cat (RIP) was just that, a lil girl cat after she adopted me - she was from the litter after jack was born (both from a ferel mother - probably why they got sick so young 9 and 5 respectively).

I am so thankful I have Maxwell!! Mreow

Peepers (RIP) was named so because she had HUGE eyes and she didn’t meow - she peeped! Sahara (RIP) got his name because he was the color of sand. Fluffy (RIP) was an orange and white longhair with a fluffy coat, hence his name. Onyx is my black kitty, Groucho has his namesake’s moustache, Princess behaves like one (although these days she wants to be promoted to queen!),Goober is a silly as his namesake on The Andy Griffith Show, Purrscilla just purrs your ears off. Sweetie was named under false pretenses - her name should be Velcro! And Buddy is a true pal, although these days his nickname’s Lovebug for obvious reasons…

(121) Christine Dahlgren says:

I got my 2 cats kind of by default. I had some neighbors that had been evicted from their apartment. They asked me to hold on to the cats until they were able to find a new apt. Well, I never saw them again.

At that point, they had been called Angel (female) and LB (male) for about 3-1/2 months. My neighbors had them from about 4 weeks old, although I have no idea why. I felt it would’ve been confusing to change their names at that point, even though they were only 4 months old. I had never owned a cat before, and didn’t know anything about them at all. I now believe that I could have changed their names with no problem. Angel would’ve remained Angel, as there is no better way to describe her. On the other hand, LB would’ve had his name changed to Brutus or something along that line. They are brother & sister from the same litter, and he is almost twice as big as Angel. Even though I had him fixed, he is a big brute when it comes to Angel.

If I ever see my ex-neighbors, I am going to thank them for never coming back to claim these two. I never knew I could love an animal so much. Since I was unable to have my own children, they have filled that spot in my heart, and are the world to me.

I adopted an (about) 9-month-old kitten
from a shelter last February. When I
“met” him and picked him up, he rolled
over for a tummy rub and purred loudly!

I named him “PURRCY”. He is also poldactyl and a beautiful red tabby.

(123) Karen Norskog says:

I waited for a few weeks before naming my sleek dark gray male cat, waiting for an inspiration. One day I looked at the cat and demanded: WHAT is your name? He looked at me and replyed without hesitation, mer row’, so from then on he was called Merow…besides it sounds French.
Merow’s sister, Missy went on an adventure one day and never returned. While following up on leads we saw another stray who somewhat matched Missy’s description, and who was not claimed, so we brought her in. This black and brown cat made a funny “pip” “pip” sound, so I named her Pippi. She also had an extrodinarily long tail, so her whole name became: Pippi Longtail.

I acquired her when my son found her surrounded by 2 dogs trying to get at her in a barn. “Okay. For now.” I fed her, maybe she would find her way home. She stuck around. An adult, come to find out she is an Egyptian Mao breed. Been with her for 6 yrs, named her “Peanut” after the movie ‘Anger Management’.
Unfortunately, my 14yo son lost his life shortly after. Peanut helps me hold on to my son, Shelby.
Many prayers to all. *smile*

Well…”Ecru” got his name because that’s what colour he is! He is, technically, probably a “dilute red spotted tabby” but, unlike most of that ilk, he is light tan (well, ecru!) rather than any shade of orange…!

Other cat names with stories…well, there was “Butchene” (who started out “Butch,” until it became apparent we had guessed wrong as to his/her sex; and a series of black cats named “Snowball” (after a black cat of my grandmother’s who had quite a sense of humour…!). And, of course, “Mohair” who was a long-haired black cat…I said “she’s one o’ them ‘mohair’ cats…you know, ‘mo’ hair than they is CAT!”

“Spot” who was a long-hair version of Data’s “Spot”…”Big Sid Catlet” (better known as “Sidney,” who was indeed a “catlet” when he was given to me by a neighbour…) and “Qat,” my Siamese (pronounced “khat” like Qatar).

My husband’s such a “motorhead”-his biggest vehicle is an Abrams tank, and his smallest is his dearly beloved Harley Davidson…he named one cat Harley, the another Davidson (nicknamed Davey), and the elder in the group at 15 is Fat Boy, a model of HD. The youngest I named Kalli as she was only going to stay until I could find the abandoned calico kitten a home, four years ago. When she completely adopted us, we added Behr to her name because she’s so rolypoly soft she’s like a teddy bear.

I have 3 girls - Timeka, Tatum and Tamsin. Timeka is 8 1/2 years old and 7 years ago would have been dumped on a farm in the Transkei - I adopted her. Tatum and Tamsin are sisters - 2 1/2 years old and were found in a plastic bag in a dumpster left to die newborn. Were saved and I adopted my darling furballs. Timeka has several names : Mika; Aunty Naasty; Nosy Cat; Fitalaasie Kat. The sisters also Tatum : Terriwirrie; Terriewings; Tinksimilingsie; Snozgirl; Little black and white. Tamsin : Wamwam; Stompiestert; Wamsin; Wamwamskiekat; Blamblam and so it goes on… and the funny thing is that they all respond to their “many” names.

(132) Alyse says:

My precious darling Louie, who passed away in November of ‘04 was named by the little girl I was babysitting at the time, and it was a toss up between Leo and Lou - it had to be a person name because my dog was Hanna. We agreed on Lou, which evolved into Louie, and eventually Lou-Bear. My princess now is Roxanne, and when it came to naming her it was a toss up between Roxanne or Regina (from mean girls). She started out as Roxie, but her dignified, down right mean personality made Roxanne much more apt to describing her. She is also a dliuted calico, so she kinda looks like a big pile of rocks.

(133) One Lovely Lady says:

I chose to name my female kittens “people” names and being 2 gray and black tabbies, my mom kept calling them the spice girls prior to myself adopting them. She forever said Nutmeg and Cinnamon so I somewhat met her requests and named them Megan (nutmeg) and Mindy (cinnamon).
Megan is a polydactyl. She discovered breast cancer cells in a lymph node in my armpit in 2001. She scratched at the area and woke me up at night with her attention to my armpit. Thought I may go 3 months early for my mammo and it came back clear. I scheduled an ultrasound and told the technician to wave her wand over the scratches in my armpit. BINGO. Origin was never found but the cells were breast so I had the cluster of lymph nodes removed and endured a very strong chemo cocktail, many hospital stays because of side affects and 29 out of 36 days of radiation. Complications continued with breast infection and lymphedema in my arm but that all began in July of 2001 and it is now August 2007! No doubt cancer would have spread through my lymphatic system and I would not be typing this today. This cat has also forewarned me of a serious abdominal surgery for a month before I realized my “flu” wasn’t going away. She persistently laid and knead my stomach when I thought I had the flu. Little did I know, it became emergency surgery with 5 days in ICU, 2 weeks in the hospital and 4 months in a hospital bed at home with a daily nurse and IV’s.
Certainly adore my Megan…”nutmeg.” Doctors find it funny but ask under their breath how “THE CAT” is, under their breath when I come in for a healthy check up.
My cat has saved my life…and those were only 2 of the circumstances.

Love her and her sister with all my heart..and because of them, FOREVER!

xoxo

My cats all have “people” names and were named after someone. My first cat already had his name when I adopted him. The shelter had named him Ed, and I loved the TV show Ed. The guy was just so sweet and I loved the name, so Ed stayed Ed. My second cat got named after my favorite race car driver, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. So became Dale. Then my third cat got named Riley when I brought him home at 5 weeks old. I have always loved the name Riley, and my kitty was just so little, cute and sweet I just thought the name fit him. That’s my clan of boys… Ed, Dale and Riley! :-)

Greetings from Switzerland! Glad to tell you how my most recent cats got their names: Beautiful Greek cat wandered into museum on a Monday, so was named (in Swiss German) Mäntig (now deceased); I got her longtime companion, black tomcat, on a Tuesday, so he was named Zyschtig (also deceased); I found his later companion on a Wednesday, so she is called Mittwuch, or Mitti; I got her present black tomcat on a Thursday, but in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, so he is named Jeudi. (In the States we had black tomcats named Satan, Felix, and Scan [from CAT scan]).

My first cat “salem” cause id just read “salems lot” was extremely handsome and when he came home pregnant we realised he was a handsome she!!We kept three of the litter “cefer” (c for cat)who was a carbom copy of her mother, “Fitz” a black a white tabby so called because he was born with epilepsy, and cracker who was named after a tv programme of the same name who’s main character was called fitz so there was a natural link between the brothers names. Later on due to an insestual relationship between mother and son we had “salker” because she was half of salem and half of cracker. We then had “Minnie” a black and white domestic long hair (named after the car not the mouse)but minnie wouldn’t be complete without “Mickey” another long hair brown, black and white tabby. Then there is “Wolfie” named by my 4yr old after the cat form the barbie movie and “Garfield” a ginger tom also named by my 4yr old. As we move down ranks we have “Katisha”a blck long haired cat, named after the character I was playing at the time from The Hot Mikado and “Koko” a black a white long haired cat was also named from the same show. Then we have nasty cat who then became devil cat and has finally settled with “Deville” a beautiful velvetine black cat but you cant have a devil without an “Angel” a very pretty blue eyed white long haired cat with black devil horns (well we all have a devilish side ;o)…) Sadly Salem,Cefer, Garfield and Katisha are no longer with us but all my babies have names that mean something and all have a connection.

I have 3 cats and their names just suit them perfectly. My eldest, a tortie and a rescue cat is called Jinx the Minx, but responds to Ding-ding. She was the ugliest cat when she was small but as she got older she became beautiful. The second cat is called Sahara Jewel, because of her colours. She is a “white and cream cat”. No idea what these colours are. She responds to Joolie. She loves to suck on any part of your clothing for comfort if she is either feeling insecure or just wants a cuddle. The third cat, also a rescue cat, is called Luna Grey. She is a white calico. Responds to the name of Chubby-butt. The name says it all. All three are girls and there have been some cat-fights but they get over it. Very territorial regarding their “pet” being me.As the saying goes dogs have owners, but cats have servants.
