Cat of the Week: Alfred

Saturday August 18, 2007
Alfred wandered down our alley in 2001. My husband was building a brick wall courtyard. The project seemed to fascinate Sir Alfred, and he hung around all day watching the process. My husband, who was not fond of cats at the time, bonded with this sweet animal and agreed that he should become a member of our family. Unfortunately, he is an only child - since all of our children are grown and their pets are gone.

Alfred is an indoor cat, although we do take him out on the enclosed courtyard when we are out there. He adapted immediately to a harness and lead, so he wanders a bit while we are outdoors. Usually he just sits and looks around, or lounges. However, if we do not put the harness on, he is nervous and exciteable. (Isn't that odd?)

One more thing...Alfred is such a romantic that he loves jewelry (I dare not leave earrings around or they disappear), and flowers - mainly plastic flowers. If we have visitors, he will bring a flower to whatever female (not the men!) is visiting. Our two-year-old grandson calls him "Alfriend" which makes my heart melt.

Cats Pictures of the Week are selected from general photo submittals. (I do not accept photos submitted specifically for "Cat Picture of the Week.")Susan did not specify any particular gallery for Alfred's photo, and eventually, it will find its way into the March Tabby Gallery. Somehow, however, since she sent it in August, it also is fitting for that gallery. I tend to think of gray tabbies as the epitome of domestic cats, perhaps because so many of them have enriched my life. I have to admit that Susan's last sentence was the clincher for my decision to use Alfred as my Cat of the Week.
