Your Kitten's First Year

Thursday August 30, 2007
It has been mentioned before that kittens are not simply miniature cats. Their development into adult cats is a fascinating process, and each step of the way a kitten is in a unique place in life. The wise caregiver will recognize this fact and use it to understand what your kitten is experiencing, as well as what his actions are telling you.

Along with the initial socializing with human family members, kittens will take their place in the social hierarchy among existing cats in the household. In my family, our alpha cats have traditionally taken new kittens "under their wings," as was the case with Jaspurr and little Billy, pictured here.

I just adopted an eight-week-old kitten. She is a little fire ball and my older boys are not really sure what to make of her. However, I did see her batting at Rufus (playing) and he didn’t try to hurt her. I think she’s going to bring Rufus and Bailey around and they’ll enjoy having Perdita as a little sister.
