Toilet Paper Play (YouTube Video)

Thursday October 25, 2007
While some cat owners may view cats' propensity to shred toilet paper roll after roll as a behavioral problem, others look at it as an amusing example of cats' quirkiness. Enjoy this YouTube video by kridley66 of her cat Stinky methodically shredding a roll of toilet paper. What about you? Do you think cats' fascination with toilet paper is funny to look at, or does it just represent a bad habit to be broken? Post your comments here.

(1) Shanna says:

My cats never got into shredding toilet paper, thank goodness. Several years ago in our first apartment, though, there was a long hallway leading from the bathroom to the front door, and Elvis used to like to grab the end of the toilet paper and run. It was the first time I’ve ever seen a house TP’d from the *inside*. It was easy to clean up and was better than lots of other destructive thngs, so I never got upset about it.

(2) Janet says:

First off “Stinky” is beautiful and needs a nicer name. Second, I think it is so funny when cats shred toilet paper, newspaper or paper towel. Sometimes during the night I will hear a ripping sound and get up to find a roll of paper towel shredded from one end of the house to the next. The minute you put the light on, they all stop and look at you as if to say, “We don’t know who did this but we are trying to find out”. I call it their own ticker tape parade. With so much stress day in and day out how can you not see humor in this!! Gotta love ‘em!!

(3) Gypsy Miles From Nowhere says:

Geez, and here I thought I was the only one. Every cat I’ve ever owned does this. The cat we have now, Shade, doesn’t just go at the toilet paper, she catches the paper towel in the washroom as well as in the kitchen. I tried changing the way I put stuff on the roller: instead of pulling a sheet from the top method it comes out from the bottom. I think it worked for all of about two hours!

(4) Lea says:

I think this is a hoot!!! I would love it if one of my kittys did it once in a while. I think the mess would be annoying after a while, but you could always close the bathroom door.

Too Funny!!!!!

(5) Janet says:

Hi Lea – it is a hoot. What makes it even funnier is the SOUND they make when they do it. That ripping, tearing sound. You always know what they are doing!!!!! I have one cat that will run away with paper towel or toilet paper and take it under the bed. Everything is a big joke!!

(6) Nuria says:

This is the reason I put my toilet paper over the medicine cabinet. Yes, I have to be careful not to sit down before I grab the role, but at least when I need to “do my business” I’ve got an intact roll of toilet paper.

October 25, 2007 at 3:22 pm
(7) Nuria says:

That’s what I love about cats, everything they see is a potential adventure, and sometimes enemy. This is the reason though why I keep my toilet paper on top of my medicine cabinet.

(8) Blissful says:

2 of our 5 cats think we only hang the tp up for them! Buster is more than happy to unroll the tp so that his sister ItsyBitsy can shred it and chew it up and make spit balls, which she somehow manages to fling about so they stick to the walls.
We have to keep the tp rolls in cupboards or be willing to use shreds and torn bits.

(9) crone says:

When we got a kitten and it constantly shredded toilet paper and tissues we dumped the cat.
Cats are a dime a dozen but tissue and other household papers are expensive.
The cat neede to become a feral animal.

(10) Charlotte says:

Cats are NOT a “dime a dozen” but are in fact LIVING, BREATHING creatures who deserve KINDNESS. They are worth a million times more than toilet paper!

October 25, 2007 at 6:06 pm
(11) Charlotte says:

This is adorable! My cats have never done this, and I’m glad of it, but it is QUITE funny to watch when you don’t have to clean it up!

(12) Lou says:

Nothing beats an adorable cat with pussonality. Maybe think about leaving the toilet seat up.

great video, pretty cat

(14) judy jewell says:

The cats are having fun. I don’t view it as “inapproprate” and an action to spend time “correcting”. It is a fun game for them. I live with 30 felines that I have rescued. Where they have come from and where they are now, shredded toilet paper is great; although don’t leave it on the roller and put it in the cupboard then when the “person” forgets to put it back in the cupboard…oh well the “children” had a great game and all is well, really.

(15) Sherry Camp says:

I think is cute when cats/kittens shred the toilet paper in other peoples house. haha However when you have Mom and her three 6month old babies, it’s never ending. We put our TP in the drawer and turn and tissue boxes upside down. I guess it wouldn’t be as bad if they kept it to the bathroom, but they like to run all over the house with pieces. We end up finding scaps for days if one of us forgets to put the TP back in the drawer. I wish I could find a way to get them to stop attacking my plants.

(16) Caroline says:

my cat dose deffaintly go to toilet paper and shred it up and I think to my self when she first did it it was cute and some what funny for a cat attacking toilet paper , because I never had a cat do that in my life time. But also i think to her that the toilet paper is a way of her sharping her nails , but after she did that to the toilet paper I kept my bath room shut

(17) DJ says:

i could watch this stuff for hours. unfortunately, my cat is an old grandma and mostly sleeps all day.

(18) Pookha says:

Like Blissful before me, 2 out of 5 like shredding TP. Even as I was reading this I could hear the new kitten digging for the rolls I just hid–I keep it buried in a drawer that she can’t access. While it’s a bad habit, I think it’s so funny that I can’t be angry. I just try to keep ahead of them.

(19) Janine says:

Jeepers! My dtr’s cat Murphy does this when we try to keep him in (locked in the bathroom) when the neighbors get stupid (obnoxious) and we have to try to keep him safe. I didn’t know it at the time but he does this. My dtr came in late to tell me that he had trashed a whole roll. Didn’t matter to me. Murphy is worth is weight in gold.

Won’t trade him for the world !

(20) Roz Walters says:

Hazey can shread what she darn well wants as far as I’m concerned. She can also sleep where she wants, anything to keep her happy. Bless her, she is 14 years old and acts more like 14 weeks. Wouldn’t have her any other way. Not that she is into loo paper at the moment, killing poor ickle spiders and ‘helping’ me with my miniature knitting/crochet is her latest ‘thing’. :)

Oh and she most definitely isn’t a dime a dozen, nor were the other twelve kitties that have passed through my hands. There is only one Hazey, there was only ever one Dusty, Jinks, William, Figaro, and all the others. Bless their furry personalities.

Roz :)

(21) Janet says:

Hey Crone – you sound like a real idiot. PEOPLE like YOU are a dime a dozen. Dumped a kitten because it played with toilet paper?? You are sick. The cat is better off without you.

(22) mirrell says:

my selena loves a few bites…only scott…so I’m a purrson who buys only scott…….

(23) valeroonie says:

HEE HEE Hobbes, my now 14 year old cat used to do this when he was little. Almost every morning I’d come down to find the roll unrolled on the floor. Do I use it, do I throw it away?? I feel bad now, but I did catch him in the act and just had a screaming fit. He apparantly didn’t like that so he did stop, but now seems like I overeacted a bit. LOL Since he is usually stubborn to a fault and doesn’t listen, well…. Now with arthritis at 14 he does still play a lot, but would be just fine with him shredding TP! kisses Hobby!

(24) panthercat says:

cats are NOT a dime a dozen…each definately haS ITS OWN CATSONALITY, AND NEEDS TO BE adored, cherished and respected as such. the person who said ‘dime a dozen’ was saying more about how she sees living beings, than about cats…there’s a reason cats were worshiped in Egypt. your video: your cat is so methodical! and i love the musical accompaniment…i’ve never seen a cat do this before, so it was highly educationl – i always pictured them standing on the floor and pulling it down in one lond strip…silly me. THANK YOU.

(25) Chele says:

I think it is funny to watch cats go after the toilet paper roll. On occasion my cats will pull some sheets off the roll, but not very often. My Dad’s cat likes to actually eat the toilet paper as well as drag the paper off the roll and across the house. I think it is more funny than anything, but if they are actually eating it like my Dad’s cat, Boomer, does, then I think it is important to work on training them not to play with the roll!

October 26, 2007 at 2:47 pm
(26) Chele says:

Oh my gosh! I just read the comment by Crone and decided I had to add another comment of my own. Shame on you, Crone! Obviously you should have never adopted a pet in the first place! I’m glad that you did “dump” her because now at least she will have a chance to be with a family that will love and care for her, like most normal people do with their pets. My three cats have broken a few things in my house, some of the things were expensive, too, but I could never even entertain the thought of “dumping” Ed, Dale or Riley just because of that – let alone because they ripped some toilet paper off of the roll. Shame on you – you don’t even deserve to have a cat!

October 26, 2007 at 3:39 pm
(27) Elaine Dunbar says:

Years ago, before computers/and or video cameras, we had a cat who delighted herself in unwinding the toilet paper from the roll and carrying it through the house. This was very interesting it the house was Victorian in style and all of the rooms entertwined. She was very careful not to break the trail of paper!!!! When she wasn’t doing this, she delighted in sitting on a commode where the kleenex box was kept, carefully picking out each individual piece of kleenex and dropping it on the floor!!!!

(28) Helen says:

My toilet paper roll sits empty after one session of shredded paper. Now when people visit they know the paper roll is in the cabinet.

(29) Noelle says:

Its amusing to watch, it would be so much better if they would just clean up when they are done. We can teach them to flush!!!??

(30) Angel-Dancer says:

One of my cats loves to play with a roll of toilet paper. Fortuneately she only plays with rolls I let her have. She does not take it upon herself to attack the roll.
It may help we often have our bathroom doors closed when not in use to keep out the dogs as well.

(31) LULABETTI PARKER says:

Crone should be wrapped in tolid paper and flushed.MY cat rolls tp into the room where I am then sheds it .I clean it up and hug my sweet little angel.the love of my life.

October 30, 2007 at 9:51 pm
(32) Shanna says:

No wonder crone spends so much money on toilet paper; with that kind of attitude she must spend a lot of time with her head up her butt.

November 3, 2007 at 7:26 pm
(33) Rosemary says:

Of the 7 cats who have “owned” me, only my last one Mittens (now 9) plays with tp. He doesn’t shred it though – he pulls down just enough to start eating it and stops when he’s had enough – done it all his life – this usually happens in the morning before breakfast – an appetizer I guess – love him

November 4, 2007 at 1:31 am
(34) Sheryl says:

I think Stinky shreds the tp roll because he hates his name, and that’s how he gets even! lol

Two of my cats, Princess and Groucho, used to shred toilet paper – but only half of the roll each time… Now I got a deal with them: they leave the tp alone, and I give them the cardboard holder after all of it is gone! Works for us…

November 5, 2007 at 4:42 pm
(35) Lorraine says:

my cat Shelby is 10 years old and no longer shred the tp, she only eats it. I also know that after she eats it she will look for a place to throw up and hopefully not on the middle of my bed. Lets put crone in a cage outside in the winter with the poor ferrel cats that don’t have a home.
