A Year Later: Pet Food Recalls Still Newsworthy

By , About.com GuideMarch 25, 2008

Follow me on:

Since I first posted my "One Year After the Recalls" article, I've seen a flood of related articles on the Internet. The news media and blogosphere are keeping the story alive. Small wonder, because the pet food recall was the single largest recall in consumer history, and has progressed to more and more recalls for human foods and other products, many imported from China. Just a sampling from this past week: Consumers Still Wary of Pet Food Industry

In my blog last week, I posted a poll, asking "A year after the pet food recalls, have you regained your trust in the pet food industry?" To date, with 340 votes, 155 readers (45%) voted SOMEWHAT, but not entirely Even more telling, 152 readers (44%) voted An unqualified NO Some of the attendant comments: I had to euthanize my precious “Frostycat” on March 27, 2007. He was suffereing from renal failure, and was beyond saving. He indeed did eat a brand of the tainted cat food that was recalled. I have no doubt that an otherwise healthy and loving indoor cat would still be alive if not for this horrible situation. It is my prayer that no more pets or pet owners will have to experience this pain and sorrow again!

We have to be conscious, now and never complacent about our human food and our pets food. As our government is always ‘making nice’ with China… I do not trust them any more. The FDA is a joke and this took way too long to fix, I see that the lawduits are still going on… Let’s LIGHT THIS CANDLE! Get these crooks out of our lives. You have to do that or we will continue to NEVER believe what you say, Love to ALL the dear dogs and kitties that suffered and died at the hands of these vile money grubbers.

No posts, I’d say it is NOT newsworthy

I respectfully disagree with the prior writer’s conclusion.

Annabelle had received “special” cat food for the holiday season and died of acute renal failure shortly afterwards. I still miss her terribly. It’s just very painful to think about and write about.

What happened to her and all the other belove animal companions is newsworthy as long and until we can truly trust that our pets have safe and healthy food.

My energies now are into doing all that I can to be sure that what I feed her littermate and new companion are as safe and nutritious as possible.
