A reader in Spain recently wrote me, asking about safe sunscreens for cats. She has two white cats which she rescued from the streets, and since they're still semi-feral, it is difficult to keep them indoors at all times. Since I lost a cat 11 years ago to squamous cell carcinoma, I know the importance of sheltering white cats from the sun. The big question is "where can I find a safe sunscreen for my cat?"

I put the challenge to Janet Crosby, our esteemed Guide to Veterinary Medicine, who did her research and wrote an article on the topic of Sunblock Info for Pets. The results are not encouraging for cat owners. At present time, apparently the only recommendation is sunscreen recommended for babies, with two important caveats. We all know that cats have a propensity for washing themselves, and even the mildest (human) baby sunscreen may contain chemicals harmful if ingested. There is hope in the future though. Read Dr. Janet's article for more information.
