Homemade Cat Food

How Balanced is your Recipe?
From Marta Kaspar, for About.com
Marta writes:

I have been feeding home-prepared food to our cats for several years and during that time I have come across a lot of recipes on the internet or in different books. Most of them claimed to be balanced diets. One day I grabbed my calculator, did the math and discovered that many of those recipes were incredibly out of balance.

Why should it matter if the cat food recipes are balanced or not?

Unbalanced nutrition could harm our pets over a long-term period. Animals (especially cats) have unique dietary needs. In the wild they would instinctively seek and find all the nutrients they need. However, our indoor pets depend entirely on us to give them the proper diet. . .learn more about balanced nutrition for cats

We are friends to several cats and subscribe to the philosophy, that a cat adopts you not you adopt the cat. Of our cats we have one, that insists on going outside at least once a day, except for during the winter. Tiger is definitely a carnivore, he likes to bring home half eaten rabbits and sometimes what is left of a mouse. I also do not recommend allowing cats outside, but Tiger has been doing this for a number of years and since there are not a large number of busy roads around us I am comfortable with this. Sometimes his prices are a little disturbing, such as the live bunny he brought home for dinner. I was able to photograph him and his prize.

I’ve been feeding our cats HMF (Home Made Food) since the food prices started skyrocketing last year. We also have three dogs so we mix their food types together and feed them all the same mixture at dinner time. They get so excited! It may sound wacky, but you can get far more dog food at a much lower price from stores like Walmart instead of pet specific stores. I guess that isn’t a gig surprise though, right? The food us lowly humans don’t consume is mixed into the daily pet mix so we don’t end up wasting food and money. The kids actually look forward to the days when my husband makes up some home fries because we always have extras that they can enjoy. The vet at our compound does the same thing for his animals. Truth be told, that’s what gave us the idea and incentive to do likewise. Our oldest cat, Walt, likes to go outside and supplement his diet with mice and what my husband calls “red badge” that is actually red cabbage from our compound garden. He’s pretty needy when it comes to red badge! What can I say? He’s a Red Badger :-) I’m not concerned that Walt will get out because we have a large wall around the complex that’s made of brick and about seven feet high.

This is cute: They say cats have nine lives, but this one has four ears.

A genetic abnormality gave Yoda, of Downers Grove, Ill., four ear flaps instead of two.

Denny, I’m not sure what your comment has to do with homemade cat food.
