Another Long-Distance Micro-Chipped Feline Returnee

Saturday August 23, 2008
Suki, a cat who disappeared a little over a year ago from her home in Carrboro, North Carolina, was recently found by a kind woman in Brookfield, Illinois. Tricia Roman, told the Chicago Tribune reporter that Suki, a pretty tuxedo cat, had appeared very friendly, unlike many strays. Suki, sensing a caring human in Roman, hung around a few days, while Ms. Roman fed her and held and petted her. The woman took Suki to her veterinarian and asked that she be checked for a microchip. Sure enough, Suki had one and her owner was contacted and arranged flight transportation for Suki's return home. It has apparently been a win-win situation for all parties involved. Tricia Roman apparently lost her own pet, Petey, during the time she was making friends with Suki, and she said that Suki had been really helpful to the recovery from her loss.

Suki isn't talking and the mysterious woman in the green Toyota who was seen spiriting Suki away last August has never been found. Every time I read one of these happy ending stories, I am again reminded of the importance of keeping cats indoors, and of microchipping all cats, whether indoor-only or not.

What a happy story for all concerned! Our 2 babies are indoor-only and microchipped. We wouldn’t have it any other way.

Our cats are indoor-only and have collars and tags, but I’m seriously considering getting them microchipped. I mean, I doubt it would ever be really necessary, since the one time they got out they went no further than under our deck, but better safe than sorry.

Microchip technology works! I had a SUPER scary experience last year after partner and I went our separate ways. After a nasty break up, my former partner Maximilian left the apartment in NY while I was away at interpretive dance camp and disappeared with all of our belongings. He took the stereo, our CDs, DVDs, Hummels and MY cat Twinkles. I reported this to the police, but they couldn’t (wouldn’t?) help me. I was soooo upset for weeks. Can you imagine? :-(

Two months later I received a call from a lovely San Francisco vet (who requested I not name him) and he asked me if I was the owner of one disheveled, but otherwise healthy cat named “Twinkles”? AHHHHHH!!!! I was so excited! :-) :-) :-) It was such a fabulous turn of events. I arranged to have my big boy flown home later that week. The microchip brought my Twinkles back to me! I highly recommend getting them implanted into your loved ones!

When we adopted our cat Violet from a Rescue Organization 3 years ago one of the first things I did was get her microchipped and licensed at our local humane society. This was even before we took her to the vet. She’s an indoor only cat, but such a valuable member of our family that we didn’t want to take any chances. Her microchip is registered not only with the humane society, and the microchipping company but with our vet’s office also. Collars and tags can be taken off or lost, but chips can’t be. A very valuable tool to recovering a loved one.
