Florida Humane Society Needs Help for Ferals
The Flagler Humane Society in Florida is trying to to build a fenced outdoor haven for feral cats. One of my readers brought this endeavor to my attention, along with a photo of a volunteer feeding one of the colonies. (You may click on the photo to see a larger version.) She wrote:
The attached picture is a small gathering of the more than 60 feral cats next to our marina. Pictured is one of the caretakers that have fed these cats daily for many years. Most of these cats have been trapped, spay/neutered and re-released in an effort to control the population. The problem is that a few, apparently uneducated, humans are killing these cats. Therefore the local Humane Society is trying to raise enough money to build a fenced sanctuary for the two or three feral colonies in the area. All humans need to understand that it is not the fault or the choice of the cat to be feral and that it is OUR responsibility to spay/neuter AND take care of our pets. Cats are not disposable items. I understand that these guys will have about a five year life span.

Isn’t it just the typical human response though? It’s a problem WE created, but instead of helping these cats, they are killed.
I hear ya. They started wackin’ cats in Iowa since the ferel population was outta control. They actually offered a $5 bounty on the things! It’s a real tragedy.
very sad
Thats why I keep my kitties indoors. I know some people say that kitties should be allowed outside, but it just seems too dangerous - I’d be worried constantly, because some people take pleasure in hurting kitties, whether they’re ferals or not. I’m glad to see someone make a safe place for kitties.
If you’re an animal and homeless you are considered “feral.” If you’re a human and homeless, you’re called a “Bum.” Weird, huh?
Are there any such outdoor havens in the New Jersey area?
This is in reply to Vinny:
Sorry, pal. Did you really expect to come to a cats web site to read about homeless humans? Granted, they are one of the real tragedies of society, but on this site, we do CATS.
It’s about time we did something for these poor guys. They didn’t ask to be born. Hopefully, this “haven” will extend their life and make their time here a little more bareable.
