In this uncertain economy, many cat owners are seeking ways to cut costs of cat care. Veterinary expenses can add up, over a year's time, and we all know cats' propensity for getting sick just when our finances are at a low point. One reader wondered if she could save money by vaccinating her cats herself, using some of those online company vaccines. She wrote:
Is it safe for the owner to vaccinate their own pets? I see offers on that very popular cat site that sell animals supplies, where you can buy the vaccine and they give you instructions on how to do it.
Here's my reply. What do you think?

In my state, NY, it is illegal to buy needles without a prescription, so getting the needles can present a problem.
I had a friend who grew up on a farm and had lots of practice in giving shots to animals. So he would vaccinate his cat and goats. He lives in New York State but very close to the MA border so he simply goes to Pittsfield, MA to legally buy the needles.
Since I have no experience in giving shots to animals so I would never attempt to vaccinate my cats.

I have a kind of unique view of this issue. My older brother had his degree in animal husbandry. I can only remember a couple of times that he would actually administer medications to any animal, in his case cattle and sheep. Even with a degree in this area he would still call the vet in most instances if not all of them. A vet is trained not only in how to administer, but where and with what vaccine. Unfortunately in todays market it gets expensive to do this, my understanding is that in some areas you will find a free clinic for shots, I would take advantage of them.
Many PETCO stores sponsor low-cost vaccinations in the stores. You do not need an appointment and they are administered by Veterinarians. You save the cost of the office visit and the shots are at least 1/3 cheaper. Go online at PETCO.COM for info.
