Mars, Inc. Recalls Another Salmonella-Tainted Cat Food

Wednesday October 29, 2008
From a Mars Petcare US Press Release:

FRANKLIN, Tenn. — October 27, 2008 — Mars Petcare US today announced a voluntary recall of a limited number of bags of SPECIAL KITTY® Gourmet Blend dry cat food sold at Wal-Mart locations in Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, and West Virginia. The pet food is being voluntarily recalled following a positive test result indicating a potential contamination with Salmonella.

Salmonella infection in cats can cause vomiting, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), fever, and lethargy. Janet Crosby, DVM, our Guide to Veterinary Medicine, warns that cross-contamination to humans is possible, and special handling of the bags is in order.

Readers may recall that in August of this year, Mars Petcare US recalled a wide number of pet foods due to salmonella contamination. To date, Nutro Pet Foods, also manufactured by Mars, have not been recalled, despite numerous consumer reports of diarrhea, vomiting, and other digestive upsets after eating various Nutro formulas of dog and cat food.

Wow that’s really a shame. But you know: people really shouldn’t support these cheapo cat food companies anyway.

I believe it’s important to invest in a quality brand of food for your cat. I personally would never feed my cats anything from the likes of “Special Kitty” and neither should anyone else.

I won’t even give that $5 a bag stuff to the feral cats I feed.

Cats are mammals just like us, and what they eat matters in terms of overall health. I hope your blog post alerts people to the dangers of poorly managed cat feed operations.

Due to the economy, I often shop at Walmart and find it to be a source of savings. I have bought the Special Kitty Multiple Cat formula litter which I find to be pretty good (my cats seem to agree). But when it comes to food, I try to be a little more discerning. I didn’t even know they made cat food till recently….I almost bought some of their kitty treats, but now I’m really glad I didn’t go there…..
