Shelter of the Week: Irvine Animal Care Center
Orange County animal shelters, like many other in the country, have been overburdened with excess animals as a result of the declining economy. The number in the Irvine Animal Care Services shelter are today double the number in a normal year, according to an article by Erika Chavez in the OC Register. The sad truth is that right or wrong, pet owners who have been foreclosed or evicted for non-payment of rent have either abandoned their pets to the streets, walked away and left them behind, or dropped them off at the closest shelter. Today I'm appealing to Orange County residents: If you've recently lost a beloved cat, or have space enough in your home and love enough in your heart, stop by the Irvine Animal Care Services shelter. The same appeal applies to all my readers, no matter where you live. Shelters all over the country are overflowing for the same reasons. And, because November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month, it would be especially fitting if you would consider adopting a senior cat. They are among the first to be sacrificed when room must be made for the influx of new homeless cats.

The Irvine Animal Shelter is a wonderful place, they take animals who are facing a death sentence at other shelters without hesitation. The staff care so much about every animal there, it is the first place that anyone in the area should go if they are looking for a new family member. I wish other shelters could raise their standards to those found in Irvine.
