Cat Breed of the Week: Burmese

Tuesday January 6, 2009
Burmese are extremely people-oriented. If you enjoy having a furry feline companion on your lap, on your computer keyboard, or under the covers with you at night, the Burmese will be a perfect cat for you. Burmese are said to be like potato chips - you can't have just one!

I recently filed a lawsuit on behalf of my clients whose cat died after receiving negligent veternary treatment. An interesting legal issue in the case is whether pet owners can recovery for emotional distress damages after the loss of a pet under these types of circumstance. The general rule in California is “no,” that pets are just property. We are working to change that gross misperception. I am looking for community support, by way of letters, emails, etc. and also for evidentiary proof of our position, such as scientific studies showing that people form emotional attachments to their pets, and that having a pet has physical and mental benefits. C’mon pet lovers . . . rally around!!

Lesley,
tried to find your email and couldn’t, so I have posted a reply here. There was a key case in Australia regarding awarding damages for emotional distress under breech of contract (a link to the case: http://law.ato.gov.au/atolaw/view.htm?locid=’JUD/176CLR344/JM:MASON’). My recollection was that the lady concerned had a dog that drowned - that was why it came to mind - but I can’t see that reference. I don’t know if this might give you anything to work with.

Shouldn’t Burmese cats now be called Myanmar cats? Joking aside, isn’t it true that Burmese/Myanmar cats have problems with their stomachs? I heard they have major hairball problems.

What legal matters have to do with Burmese cats. Has anyone seen that videoe clip from the US on Fux news that show a ski-diver jumpin with his cat? The cat was so scard! I think it was no so schmart.

This blog entry has certainly drawn some interesting comments, but only 2 of the 6 thus far are related to Burmese cats. :(

What is Paco?

(9) Ray says:

Paco is a candidate for the Presidential race. He is above scandal. He does not have relationships with high priced call girls. He IS the chosen one!

This may be off topic, but is it safe to feed cats dog food if you can’t make it to the store?

(11) KJ says:

Caddy, I don’t think its a good idea. BTW, who/what is PACO?

I love my Burmese kitten! They have such a wonderful personality. Does anybody know if they are prone to breathing / sneezing problems?

(13) Matthew says:

They are only prone to these problems if Paco says it is so. Still not sure who Paco is…yet!
