Countering Counter-Surfing Cats
Thursday January 8, 2009
One of the more common discussions in the Cats Forum as well as my email box is "how do I keep my cats off the kitchen counter?" Indeed, some of the forum members are of the conviction that it's okay to let their cats counter-surf. However, I'm with the side that views this practice as unwise, because of potential hazards to the cats, such as jumping on a hot stove or ingesting cleaning products' residue that might remain in a sink or on the counter. Here are some tips for keeping your cats off those dangerous counter-tops.

I tried the aluminum strip method but my cat Geebus kept ripping it up for some odd reason. I finally settled on up-turned thumb tacs spread on the countertops and haven’t had any problems since then.
You mention the things that are bad for cats but no mention of things that are bad for humans from cats on counters, fecal contamination being a huge one. How odd.
Donna: You are correct that I have not mentioned the health hazards to humans of cats on kitchen counters. However, the vast majority of my readers come here to read about cats, not about human health problems. I think it’s safe to assume, in this case, that most people are aware that various parts of cat anatomy don’t belong where human food is being prepared.
