Bush Family Cat India Dies With Little Notice
It's a sign of the times, or just human nature, I suppose. But it never fails to surprise me that "famous cats" don't get all that much notice, while their counterpart dogs are all over the news. Is there anyone in the U.S. who hasn't read story after story about the Obama family's quest for a White House dog? To their credit, they have apparently decided on a shelter puppy, but from what I've read, they want a purebred. Traditionally, U. S. Presidents have leaned toward dogs as White House Pets. India certainly played second fiddle in the news media to the Bush's Scottish Terriers, as did the first President Bush's cat, which was left on the ranch in Texas in favor of Bush senior's dogs.
Rick Dunham, writing for the Houston Chronicle, seems to agree with my feelings. I wouldn't have even known about India, nor her passing, had I not run across his article. I have little doubt that the Bush family grieves at her death, which resulted in an announcement by the Presidential Press Secretary. It's just too bad that after 18 years of faithful service to her family, most people never knew anything about this beautiful little cat until she died. Rest in peace, India.

It is so sad that cats don’t get the same press as dogs. Franny may I make one correction in your article, the Houston Post is no longer around. The only paper we have is the Houston Chronicle. Thank you so much for the article I enjoyed it very much.
That is soooo sad on so many different levels.
I seen India recently-when Mrs Bush was showing the white house. Beautiful cat. this is a surprise to me.so sorry about her. I do a cat Rescue and Placement service and I have 41 here right now , love everyone of them dearly-they are all fixed and several are declawed.
