What's in a (Cat) Name?

Thursday July 2, 2009

It's been huge fun looking at the unusual names while sorting through entries for the Cutest Cat Contest, and some stand out as so popular, I've had to number the entries with duplicate names. Thus far we have 3 Chesters , 2 Sashas , 2 Callys, 2 Callies, and a Cali. We have a Bird, and a Mew-Mew, an amusing combination.

I've personally had two female cats with male names. We had Figaro (who became Figaroa after giving birth to a litter of 5 kittens), and Arthur, whom I smuggled into the house under the guise of being a male. My Angel cat Shannon was the only cat to my knowledge who actually had a street sign named after him (he was also named after Shannon park, where my daughter found him.)

Read the featured article to see how other people name their cats, then tell us how you arrived at your own cat's name. Your comments are welcome.

(1) Charlie says:

We have 6 cats now. Each got their name for a different & maybe strange reason.
1. Tess- After a TV character from “Touched by an Angel”
2. Jake – From a TV Show “Jake & the Fat Man”
3. Putter- After my favorite golf club
4. Sunny- Because of his light yellow color & warm personality
5. Socks- Because he is a Tuxie, mostly black with small white socks
6. Lucy- a Black & White cow pattern with a funny black spot covering her nose. DW Kim said she reminded her of Lucille Ball for some strange reason.

1. Simba- lion king
2. Mike- Mike Tyson
3. Simon the Smilodon- Siamese cat
4. Katey- called kitty for so long, couldn’t find her a home, stuck with Katey.
5. Mandy- picked out her own name. I sat and called out names and when she reacted and meowed to “mandy”, that’s what she picked.
6. Callie- calico
7. Seven- Seventh cat, 7.7 pounds, 7 months old when rescued, neutered on the 17th, lucky seven because I took him in.
8. Spooky- tortie, spooky looking cat with an orange Mohawk.
9. Roger the garage cat- found trapped in our garage for 4 days without food and water

(4) Marlene says:

We have 2 Bengal brothers that we named “Barnum & Bailey” (after the famous Circus of the same names) – because that’s what it’s like living with these two – a very “entertaining” Circus!

(9) HosMan says:

I found little Alley(the alley cat)hiding among bushes in…an alley. She was probably 8wks old but very tame and friendly.I just could not let her die so I began feeding and watering her.Next she was indoors whenever I was home. After that…well after the litterbox it`s kind of a done deal, right? My very first feline and she`s truly amazed me with how loyal, affectionate and good-natured she is.Sad,but I always thought of cats as snobby and elitist “accessory” pets.My Alley cat is a sweetheart and even sleeps with me!Saving an innocent little kitten from a horrible death and watching her respond to love and care made me feel…well, really nice and happy.

(10) Cindi Green says:

When I first got my Siamese girl, she was named Mouse. Changed it to Sammi. My tabby girl was named Paisley and I changed it to Patches. My little black Oriental female was the only one who kept her original name. It was Marteka, nicknamed Marti. All of my cats are rescued and spayed. Wouldn’t have it any other way.

(11) Sue says:

Our past and present cats were named for a variety of reasons …
Mishka – Mike named her, but I don’t remember exactly where he heard the name.
Baby – originally because she was the smallest kitten in her feral colony, kept after Mike adopted her because her growth was stunted due to her past as a feral and extremely young mom, and she still looked like a kitten at the age of 4.
Audrey – after Audrey Hepburn, whom she strangely resembles.
Abby – just because I like the name.
Sebastian – Mike named him after the Miami U mascot.
Sophie – again, because I like the name, plus she looks exotic due to being part Siamese (or something like that).
Katie – she’s a marmalade, popularly bred in Scotland. Katie’s a good Scottish name, and I’m part Scottish too.
We name the kittens we rescue and home from our feral colony based on looks and/or behavior so they are easier to keep track of (and for the vet to remember), for example: Midnight, Stormy, Autumn, Patches, Sunshine and Frankie (he has bright blue eyes, uncommon in the colony).
Helen, who also feeds the colony, named most of the older ones based on behavior, such as Thelma & Louise (always stick together), Sweetie Pie, and my personal favorite, Stud Muffin.
