Are You Kitty-Whipped?

Saturday August 1, 2009

I long ago caved in by admitting that I am a hopelessly Kitty-Whipped Slave to Cats. Yesterday, Kim Campbell Thornton, contributor to msnbc, found a bunch of people who seemed prone to the same strange relationship with cats. Ms. Thornton describes it a bit differently:
Our relationship is based on us giving and them taking — kind of like a bad boyfriend. And yet, we adore, feed and house them, and we constantly try to please them in a hopelessly co-dependent kind of way. What does that say about us?
I'd say we're kitty-whipped, Kim.

How about you? Are you kitty-whipped, or do you imagine yourself the boss in your home? Vote in the poll and then admit your problem to the world of other slaves to cats. I promise you, you're not alone.

My boyfriend and I are the exact same way. I don’t know if it’s ME or the CATS that enriched his life in the way of knowing cat-submission, but he’s welcome. :)

I didn’t have to take the poll to know that most of us who dearly love our kitties are definitely “kitty-whipped” and my husband and I wouldn’t have it any other way. We love our five babies.

(4) Shawna says:

You know you are kitty-whipped when you understand what they are saying. To the average person, a cat in a kitchen meowing means it wants fed. To a kitty-whipped person, the cat is actually saying “give me a slice of that roast beef you have in the fridge!”

My 3 year old Russian Blue boy, Comet Blue, really has me trained. After he uses the “Box,” he finds me and makes a certain toned “meow” to let me know I need to scoop the box.

Me and my husband are kitty-whipped slaves to our beloved 4 balls of fur. Our oldest Linus, 5 years old, talks up a storm. He also sleeps in between my husband and I and snores like a wood chipper.

There never was a question about it. From my earliest boyhood days, I have been the “Posession” of one cat or another, occasionally two or three at a time. They have slept with me at night, dinned with me in the evening.
They have consoled me on report card day, comforted me when ill. Most importantly, shared my pain at the loss of my wife.
Others may say what they will, I see them as God’s gift to mere mortals, who need a bit of love.

(9) Zoe says:

I am SO kitty-whipped. I serve my cat. I am her pillow, her food supply, and I provide her with entertainment and a clean potty. I’ll be moving out of the country within the next year and my friends are quite surprised that I’m willing to jump through all the hoops in order to prevent my poor girl from having to go through quarantine AND postponing my move to do so. Most people assumed I was just going to find a local home for her. Not an option! Also, I would love to have two or three cats, but my girl would not allow it. What she says, goes. :)

ZOE, welcome to the KWA (Kitty-Whipped Anonymous) group. Our motto is “Cats rule — and they never let us forget it!” :)

Am I kitty-whipped?…most definitely! I am sooo tuned in to my (recent) boy (who passed away just last Wed, on July 30th) and my girl! Any mrrrow is welcome, and I actually encourage the ‘talking’! I wait on them hand-n-foot, and don’t mind at all, as they are like my children – they are part of our little family unit.

I keep saying ‘they’…my little Edgar passed away just last Wednesday morning – we had to assist him to cross over to Heaven. He seemed to be having some pain the night before (he had been declining for quite some time) and the doctor found a mass tumor in his abdomen the next morning.

My heart of course is deeply grieved to have lost my wonderful little companion. My calico girl isn’t as unconditionally affectionate as he was, but hopefully as she matures more (she’s already 10!), she’ll mellow with age.

Oh, I miss him!
