Salem is 10 years old and we adopted him from the local humane society. He had been delivered to the society because the owner said he wouldn't use the litter box. We have had only a little problem with this. If he is upset, he will urinate on a rug near the box. However, this happens infrequently.
When I saw Salem I knew I had to have him. We lost our tuxedo cat of 15 years, Percy, in the fall. When I picked up Salem and he butted noses with me and began purring, I teared up.
He was timid at first. It was as if I had to let him know it was o.k. to get on the furniture and go in the other rooms and upstairs. The first day he kept licking and licking me as if he was thanking me. He loves to be petted and can't get enough. . . .read more and see full-sized photo.
As I read Cynthia's first paragraph the thought came to mind that one person's throwaway cat became another person's cherished companion. I love the fact that Cynthia was willing to take a chance on Salem, and that she took the time with him to bond with him and encourage him to be more assertive, and that Salem is loved for being himself, and not as a "replacement" cat.

What a beautiful cat, and thank you for rescuing him.
Salem thanks you and so do I. We’ve been feeding him IAMS and he runs and jumps and he boxed Bridgie, my dominant female. He really is a darling. He even talks – his meow is funny, like he’s never used it before.
He is beautiful. We have four cats – three from shelters and one from Katrina. It’s so worth it to adopt cats. They are so grateful for their wonderful new home!
i was sad to read this story my tabby taz i have had him for seven years and when he gets really upset he has cystitis and does it where he feels comfortable but a quick trip to the vet sorts him out and this problem is quite comman in males i would not part with taz ever
