Is there a non-allergenic cat my husband can live with?

Sunday September 20, 2009
Fall weather brings with it it's own set of allergens, and those of us with hay-fever or asthma may find ourselves in a heightened allergic condition. It seems to be timely then, to discuss cats and allergies. This reader isn't allergic, but her husband is. She writes:
Question: Is there a non-allergenic cat my husband can live with?

I had cats while growing up, but my husband is allergic to them. Is there any way we can find a "non-allergenic" cat so that I can get my "cat fix" and my husband won't suffer with his allergies?

Pictured here is Siberian Kitten Shea. Siberian cats are believed by some to be hypo-allergenic, allegedly lacking Fel d 1 in their saliva.

My wife and I have a Cornish Rex and it really does seem to be true that the Rex breed causes less of an allergic reaction because one of our friends, who is HIGHLY allergic to cats, never has a problem when she’s over and can even have our Rex on her lap! They only have one coat of fur as opposed to 2 which I guess “normal” cats have.

Sphinx’s are a lot of work if you go that route but those are probably the best for people who have allergies.

Perhaps look into Siberian Cats. They are supposed to be a “hypo-allergenic” breed, and they’re super cute too! Best of luck in the search!

Yes! Get a Siberian. My partner was very allergic to my mum’s moggy, itchy eyes, athsma etc. We looked into the Sierian breed and one breeder let us do a allergy visit at thier home to see the extent of his reaction before adopting. We are now the proud parents of a Siberian Kitten and my partner is not allergic at all.
