Managing Chronic Diseases in Cats

Thursday November 12, 2009

As cats age, some of them develop chronic diseases, including the most common one: CRF (Chronic Renal Failure). Managing a chronic disease in cats need not be as overwhelming as you might expect, provided you are given sufficient instruction and support by your veterinarian, know what symptoms are red flags, and what side effects might be considered normal, and hold to a regular routine.

Routine is all-important to cats, and even a very sick cat will expect his medication and other treatment to be delivered regularly, on schedule. Learn more about managing diabetes, hyperthyroidism, chronic renal failure, and other chronic feline ills. I have recently added Hepatic Lipidosis (Fatty Liver Disease) to this list. Although Fatty Liver Disease is not chronic, it often accompanies other chronic diseases in cats.

It can definitely be exhausting. Routine is important, to them and to us. I even have routines for when I do the endless pill cutting.

Even for healthy cats, routine is so important. I am seeing how discombobulated the vowels are because of the construction, and finish work, and I can’t imagine if they were sick on top of all this.

I just lost my cat Tibs on last Friday after being sick for a year with FIP. And it was very triing but worth the work. Tibs had to be feed about every 3 hours and the food would go right though him. And when he had to go a lot of times he didn’t make it to the cat pan. He was on 3 to 4 different meds that we had to put in his food daily. He was given just weeks to live and we had him for another year. I would go through it again to have him with us. He was 2 1/2 years old at his death.

This is more of a question than a comment. I would like opinions as to which cat/kitten food to give to my newly adopted kittens. I have not asked my Vet. yet because I figure every Vet has a different answer to that question. My kittens are 4 months old now and only having Hill’s Science dry food. Is there something better and should they be also having soft food too ? I would appreciate any answers I might receive. Thank you.

There are lots of better foods. Just go the area on this site that is devoted to cat food.
