Breed of the Week: American Bobtail

By , About.com GuideJune 28, 2011

Follow me on:

The American Bobtail originated about 40 years ago with found cats having a natural bobtail. It is a powerful looking cat, strong and robust, as befitting its heritage, and has a definite look of a wild bobcat. Despite its wild appearance, the American Bobtail is described as extremely intelligent, kind, and devoted to its human companions. The magnificent American Bobtail shown here is Catalons Camouflage, a short hair brown spotted male.

My wife and I recently adopted an American Bobtail kitty we named Bilbo and boy is he a mixed bag of fun and rowdiness. Our other two cats, one Cornish Rex and one Oriental Shorthair, have really been under fire since his arrival with lots of surprise attacks and pouncing. But we love him and hope he grows out of the attacking. His coat is so plush and he’s a wonderful cuddler. We would recommend this breed to anyone though a little patience is required if you have other cats! (visit his MySpace site at http://www.myspace.com/bilbobobbles)

NOTE added to above post: Our Bobtail may be a mix because he sure is a small little guy and from what we’ve read the purebreds get BIG.

I have a female American Bobtail with her 4 kittens. They are very loving and when they bond to you its like no other breed of cat I have ever owned. More people should discover this breed for sure.

OOps, my husband saw your blog post and knows I love bobtail cats of every kind so he left the last entry in my name and got some of the info. wrong.

I owned an American bobtail for 12 years and it was one of the strongest bonds I have ever had with a cat. I now own Highland Lynx bobtails and they are fascinating and wonderful too.

I will never own anything but bobtail cats after owning them. They are such an awesome combination of loving pet and exotic beauty.

We adopted (unbeknown to us) an American bobtail cat from the humane society’s adoptable cats about 4 moths ago. She is such a lovig cat. She is just about a year old, and supplies us with such laughter and love. Just tonight,as I was unpacking groceries she claimed a paper bag (cold bag) and squeezed her whole body in it. I picked up the bag and carried it and her to my husband. He put her and her bag on the floor, where she decided it would make a good cat skateboard. She ran at the bag,, putting her front end n the bag, scooting herself and the bag across the floor.
