Review: Litter Genie Cat Litter Disposal System

By November 16, 2012

Follow me on:

Disposing of soiled cat litter may seem to be a thankless job. However, you'll find it less time-consuming, and definitely more pleasant when litter box odor is eliminated by routinely scooping the stinky poop and pee clumps into an odor-shielding container such as the Litter GenieTM.

Photo of Litter GenieDirty litter boxes constitute one of the major reasons cats pee out of the box, and truthfully, who could blame them? Take a look at my full review of the Litter Genie, including a comparison with a similarly designed Litter Locker Plus.

I agree with you about the original Litter Locker, Franny. I finally gave up on it because it got hard to turn the handle after a few times of scooping because of the arthritis in my thumbs.

I had just been using grocery bags, and REALLY good litter for a long time. I had seen the LItter Genie, but assumed it would be too expensive.

Well, now I have two of them, and I really like them. The only problem is you can’t really carry it by the handle, because the “button” just isn’t big enough to really keep the thing closed. Other than that I love it.

The Litter Locker has been changed, and seems to be the exact same design as the Litter Genie. I’m not sure it is made by Petmate anymore, either.

Hi E,

I noticed the new Litter Locker too, and it has a different company name. I wonder if maybe it’s licensed by Petmate. I noticed there is no space between Litter Locker in the advertisement.

The only problem I have with the Litter Genie is opening the bottom part of the lid. I had to use a screw drive to pry it up so I could insert the bag container.

I just got my third one today, and by using the screwdriver, assembled it in only about 3 or four minutes (after 10 minutes hunting for a screwdriver) LOL

I also agree about the original litter locker.
But I have had the Litter Locker 2 for almost a yr now (got my rescue kitty a yr ago next week :) )
At that time I don’t remember seeing anything about the Litter Genie, and searching I don’t see any reviews online before about March 2012 for it. I am thinking that the new Litter Locker may have been produced before the Litter Genie.

In looking at their website it seems to be owned by the same people, not sure if it is Petmate or not, but the customer service number for both the old and new ones is the same.

The new one is a BIG difference from the old. And does appear a lot like the Litter Genie. As I said I’ve had mine almost a yr now so it isn’t that new.

I really don’t think a fair comparison can be made with the old Litter Locker as it is not even being made at this time. (they do still have the refills for it if anyone still uses the old one). It really is not the same product anymore.

I looked it up and was able to find the Litter Locker 2 for $1 less than the Litter Genie and refills for a few dollars less as of today. So price is comparative between the two of them especially if you find any specials.

I think that it just comes down to a matter of preference and maybe a slight cost difference in the choice between the 2. They do seem almost exactly the same to me.

Sorry if this seems anti Litter Genie, I really don’t have any preference for one over the other. Just wanted to let you know how the Litter Locker has changed from the old one.
And I wouldn’t live without it either. It makes such a big difference for me being able to not have to take out dirty litter everyday. & no odor.
I think that anyone looking at either product would be happy with it.

Marie, thank you for your comments. Of course, I had no idea that the old Litter Locker is no longer available, as I’ve had no inclinations to purchase one since I stopped using the original. I’ll eventually check out Litter Locker 2, but for now, I’m perfectly happy with the Litter Genie, and have mastered the assembly quite easily.

I gave up on “automatic litter boxes” once I discovered the Cat Genie. It washes your litter (special granules) and while it’s not fool-proof, it is the best thing I’ve ever found. Mine have had a couple of problems, but they do come with a warranty. In fact, the computer/motor on mine went out yesterday and I will receive a new unit next week. It had one month left on its 2-year warranty. Also, I think it ends up being less expensive in the long run than replacing kitty litter every couple of weeks. Plus nothing to go to the landfill. All the waste goes down the drain.

P.S. I am in no way connected to this business other than being a happy customer.

I read you faithfully Franny but WOW you guys in the States have so many wonderful things for our lovely cats that I tend to say you are all very spoiled. I live in Paris, France and it took me almost a year to find a BIG toilet for my beloved Ongkhop age 11. Now I have a new baby Chipi age 1. Both my loves were found in the street. (O in a garbage container!) . Anyway the French adore animals but we are not as sophisticated as you as far as accessories are concerned. I even have trouble findind the right size bags for their toilets as the supermarket only sells standard. But this is not a complaint! Only to say that our beloved “chats” are the best companions that we (I) have ever had. Best to all of you and a Happy Catsgiving !!
