Happy 11th Birthday Jaspurr & Joey!

After my beloved red cat Shannon left me in 2001, for the first time in several decades, I found myself without a "Sunshine Boy." It took six months to find one, in the form of baby Jaspurr and his brother, Joey. I documented their story, along with "The Great Kitten Search," for their first birthday.

Photo of 4 day old kittenJill, a forum member (later Forum Host) knew I was looking for a red tabby kitten, and emailed me a Petfinder.com story about their litter. The kittens were four days old when I made that fateful phone call, and the first time we were able to see them was when they were 11 days old - a week later. Wendy, a volunteer for a shelter/rescue group about 20 miles from us, had placed the Petfinder ad. It was love at first sight, and I cried when I held Jaspurr for the first time. (He hissed at me in return.) Since I now had my Sunshine Boy, my husband, Asa got the pleasure of selecting a second kitten. He looked them all over and said, "I guess it'll be the little grey guy." Here's a photo of the two of them together about 15 days before we brought them home:

Jaspurr and Joey turned eleven years old on February 20th, and they are so much a part of our family that it's been like watching your kids grow older. In "human years," they are physiologically 60 years old now, and have some of the same medical issues. Jaspurr is overweight, at risk of feline diabetes, and Joey has asthma. Although a "senior citizen" now, Jaspurr still has the same endearing habit he's had since kittenhood. Our pet insurance policies have been a godsend, and we are thankful to have had veterinarians who are both expert and caring. I am doing all I can under the responsible care guidelines to give my boys the healthiest, happiest lives possible for another five or more years (please, many more years.)

In my haste to post this before another day passed by, I neglected to complete the part about Jaspurr’s “endearing habit..” Every evening, when we have our together time in the living room, I spread a blanket across my lap. Joey curls on the left, and Jaspurr lies on the right with just his head, torso, and front paws on my lap. He kneads my leg with both paws, and suckles his left foreleg, purring like a diesel engine. (Actually, both purrs and diesels share the same megahertz, according to studies.)

When he’s nursed long enough, he carefully dries his leg with his rough tongue, then sleeps like a contented kitten with a peaceful little smile on his face. Gotta love him!

I have “Ole Yellar” who came to my door one day all beat up. It was obvious that he had not been nuetered. We have a local Animal Outreach,,(non kill group), who handle mostly cats. I had no idea how old he was, but he was a big undernourished cat. I took him to Outreach who do neutering males and fixing females. They charge a bare minimum. So when I picked him up, they couldn’t believe I was doing this for a stray cat. They fixed his wounds, and gave me antibotic to be given twice a day for two weeks, which meant keeping him in the house. At the end of the two weeks, I opened the door, thinking he wou leave then. He went out and ten minutes he was back asking to come in. I have jhad him seven years now, and don’t know how old he was then. He adapted to our home and other cats(five) very well. They all drink out of a glass I kep on my nighttime bed stand, and let me know when it gets low. One of them (“lilbit”) drinks out of her paw. I have never seen a cat do that before or since.
