After my beloved red cat Shannon left me in 2001, for the first time in several decades, I found myself without a "Sunshine Boy." It took six months to find one, in the form of baby Jaspurr and his brother, Joey. I documented their story, along with "The Great Kitten Search," for their first birthday.
Jill, a forum member (later Forum Host) knew I was looking for a red tabby kitten, and emailed me a Petfinder.com story about their litter. The kittens were four days old when I made that fateful phone call, and the first time we were able to see them was when they were 11 days old - a week later. Wendy, a volunteer for a shelter/rescue group about 20 miles from us, had placed the Petfinder ad. It was love at first sight, and I cried when I held Jaspurr for the first time. (He hissed at me in return.) Since I now had my Sunshine Boy, my husband, Asa got the pleasure of selecting a second kitten. He looked them all over and said, "I guess it'll be the little grey guy." Here's a photo of the two of them together about 15 days before we brought them home:

Jaspurr and Joey turned eleven years old on February 20th, and they are so much a part of our family that it's been like watching your kids grow older. In "human years," they are physiologically 60 years old now, and have some of the same medical issues. Jaspurr is overweight, at risk of feline diabetes, and Joey has asthma. Although a "senior citizen" now, Jaspurr still has the same endearing habit he's had since kittenhood. Our pet insurance policies have been a godsend, and we are thankful to have had veterinarians who are both expert and caring. I am doing all I can under the responsible care guidelines to give my boys the healthiest, happiest lives possible for another five or more years (please, many more years.)
