"Horny" Neutered Cat?

By December 7, 2013

Follow me on:

This forum discussion started over six years ago, and long since dwindled to a halt. However, this blog mention of it went viral, and people are still finding it many years later. Strangely enough, the original poster only posted once, and apparently never returned to the forum to read the responses. jaxxxxxxx wrote:

I have a 3 year old cat who is neutered. Whenever he is on my lap or sitting beside me he seems to act as if he is horny. When I try to move him or tell him to stop he snaps at me and makes a funny sound, like he doesn't want me to disturb him. This seems like very unusual behavior to me. Is there anyone who has seen this before, and is there anything i can do to fix this?

My cat does the same thing! Check out youtubes.com keyword: Sheckey. I guess it means that your cat needs more love from you….I know.. strange and freaky.

Our cat is 2 yrs. old and neutered. He
gets “horny” all the time and actually
humps the sofa cushions, clothing, etc. quite often. It’s disturbing and we scold him and usually stop him while he’s in the act. Don’t know why he does it, but it’s unusual. I can’t find much into about it.

(3) Kesh says:

He does it because it’s natural. maybe you shouldn’t have pets if you are going to scold them for their natural behavior. you get horny too, don’t you? do you want to be scolded for it? what is wrong with you people? Get him a female friend or something.

(4) Sam says:

Thank you Kesh! My 5 year old male cat just started to do this and the last thing I want to do is scold him. He’s an ANIMAL, just like we are. Their natural urges are just that: natural. I’m trying to understand more about why his behavior has suddenly changed.

(5) Anna says:

Maybe because the NATURAL urges of the male also includes a barb located in his penis that lodges into the flesh of the female which makes it harder for the female to dislodge the penis… and by the way it hurts her, too.

My 1 year old male cat woke me up by violently humping my leg last night. He also pants when he sees females or smells females. He’s been neutered from a young age, odd cat.

(7) Diane says:

Our 5 year old male cat (also neutered) does the same thing several times a day. At first we didn’t really know what he was doing because he just massages his front and back paws, which all our cats do. Except he gets really into it…and then we noticed he would actually start shaking and …hmmm, make a release. It’s quite gross and we try to stop him in the middle of the act whenever possible, but he also gets angry and just goes a few feet away and keeps doing it… Anyway, we’re pretty confused as to what to do and if this is at all normal.

(10) Jean says:

My cat does the same thing.. the needing his paws on the couch and then shaking his back end, all with a concentrated look on his face. Once i tried to stop him and touched him, he gave me angry look and jumped off the couch and proceeded to lick his “area”. He’s 13 years old, has been neuteured since an early age, and has never done this until recently!

(11) MzzRollow says:

I also have a young male cat and he gets horny and as he’s getting older he seems to be horney more often, he humps a big stuffed bear that is his toy. Sometimes he’s always nagging and following me everywhere i go in the house and he just meows and meows if i don’t give him the attention he wants. Ive never owned a cat before but he was a stray kitten and so i took him in. I let him loose outside and he basicly comes and goes as he pleases but he’s very lazy so I try to motivate him to go outside to play or become freindly with all the other neiborhood cats which theres quite a few. Im thinking maybe he needs a female cat to hump and that would help.. What can I do ? does he need a female cat? but why does he seem Shy around other cats? Im not sure he knows he’s a cat since he was very lil when I got him and was raised together with my dogs, they eat and sleep together I think he thinks he’s a dog.

(12) Terri says:

Must be something in the air … my neutered himalayan has been doing the same, at least he is picking stuffed himalayan cats as his “lady loves”.
He is three and I got him from a shelter when he was a year old and already altered.
I talked to my vet about this there are a couple reasons they said this may occur. One is behavioral (another cat outside provoking or dominance issues if you have other cats.) Was told if mine is low cat and he know the others would correct him he “dominates” something he can and maybe because these look like him? He was the last added to the family and the other two, although one is 18 years old, will not tolerate him. The older ones doesn’t even like him walking by her without her hissing and smacking him. Time for a behaviorist if this continues or becomes worse or agression shown to other cats in household.

The other is perhaps surgery missed something when he was neutered the first time. Perhaps when it was done both weren’t distended and there still is something there and yes, he can get another cat pregnant even if it hasn’t dropped. I had heard this happening in dogs but had never had a cat do this.
Was told that blood work can be done to test hormone levels. If levels are high explorative surgery can be done, X-rays may not show anything.

I too have corrected him, telling him he is bad and have taken his Lady Loves away. (He started with one kitty about his size and has two smaller. He does look cute as he carries them down the steps but then …

This is a new development for him … almost welcome the periodic pooping in the middle of the kitchen floor better.

Hope this helps and gives you a point to ask your vet from if this persists.

I am so glad to have stumbled on this forum, my cat Nemo is 2 and in the last few weeks I have noticed a change in his behaviour. He seems despressed (!) and doesnt want to go out, always under my feet and has started kneading me and then trying to hump my arm/leg every time i sit on the sofa. When I stop him he gives me a tiny bite then meows at me in a new miaow that i’ve never heard before. I think that if he continues being depressed I might take him to the vets to see if they did leave anything behind. Poor nemo, he must be so frustrated!!!

We had a stray show up. He is humping everything. Towels, pillows, sheets. We had him neutered after staying at the local shelter and he is still going at it. Also spraying. This behavior is not accetable but he is such a nice cat. Weird, I’ve never sean a cat doing this.

(17) lisa says:

I have a 7 year old neutered cat who does the same thing.Except directly to me.He was fixed at about 6 months old and I adopted him at 1 month old.He had never been around another cat to learn this behavior. He does it when I am asleep and he stands on the body pillow I keep under my knees and he bites and holds the blanket(I am assuming the way he could hold a females neck) and he dances as I call it.He kneads with is front and steps all around with his back. The pillow or the blanket will come up and touch his privates. At first I had no idea what he was doing and I went to touch him and he made a growl at me and since he has never attacked me but did nibble i grabbed him and held him on his back like I always did when I played or carried him.I saw “it” sticking up and I quickly figured out what he was doing.
There is a fixed female cat who lives with us now and he had lived with another female once and has NEVER tried to initiate sex with either one.His only sexual behavior is on my bed.Once he was on my back.I woke up and knocked him off.Later he was back but grabbed a mouthful of my hair and did it.I did smack his butt as the claws hurt and he didnt do that again but he does straddle my legs under the blanket.
I asked my vet about it and after he laughed and said he had never heard of it before (and I wanted to crawl under a rock and die of embarrasment)he mentioned kitty Ritalin and a behavior specialist who charges 30 dollars a visit.Needless to say I refuse to medicate my cat for being horny and healthy but I cant afford a Kitty Shrink at 30 bucks an hour.I just try to yell no.I did get a spray bottle next to my bed if he wakes me up and wont stop. That works but doesnt end the behavior. He will stop for that night but do it again when he wants.I thought I was the only one with what I jokingly referred to as a retarded cat.I just wish he could figure out how to do it with the female.Sorry for being gross but all is the truth.

My cat is about 8 mo. old I have not neuterd him yet I can not afford it, I any one know of how I can get him fixed for cheep or free please let me know, so far I have not expiranced and of what I have read except for the urinating, however, the thing is, is that he will only urinate on my sleeping bag (the one that I use to sleep in) the first time he did it I was sleeping in it at the time I awoke to a cold suprise at my feet, and it was obvious to me it was not just onece but sevreal times throughout the night. I have washed that sleeping bag about 20 times in the past 2 weeks and now every room in the house is off limmits whin I am not home, I lock him in the bathroom with his litter box, food, and whater till i get home from work (I work graveyard) and he was only doin this when I am not home except for the first time.

I used to work on a pig farm, is neutering a cat sortof the same prosses as a pig? if so I have done that hundreds of times.

(20) Teresa says:

I have a 2 year old male who was ABNOXIOUS around my unfixed female. We had him fixed. Vet said he would stop that disturbing behavior. He literally would “stalk” the female and wouldn’t even let her go to the litter box without being on top of it to try and mount her when she came out.

Now it’s been 6 months, and he is still stalking the unfixed female, and moaning, screaming and crying if we isolate them. I realize the unfixed female may still be giving off a scent, but you would think he would of changed somewhat after his surgery. The female has not gotten pregnant. So the removal of his privates must of been a success. Someone else said to stop him from the mating behavior, we could take him back to the vet and have his hormonal levels checked. If still up, they might have kitty prozac. I will get my female fixed asap, but if he continues after she’s fixed, I am at the end of my rope with ideas of what to do with him.

My 11 yr old neutered male cat is a humping freak. He only humps me though, not anything else (lucky me.) My boyfriend says he is “programming” me because it looks like he’s typing on a keyboard. I think he kneads me like a batch of uncooked dough. He arches his back very high and then his body quivers in a very wrong way. When i try to get him to stop, he is very persistent and goes right back to humping. Sometimes he will meow and get upset when i try to get him to stop. HE didnt start the humping until he was around 7 yrs old which is kinda weird. I just read on the internet that it could mean he is not getting enough attention, but I dont feel like that is the case….anyone else know why cats do this??? at least it’s good to know he’s not the only one. :)

My cat is 8 yrs old. I recently notice him humping my 1 yr old kitten also a male. They are both neutered. I stop him when he does it and just keep this up. Its strange, but it must be something in his sexual glands.

My 12 yr old male cat just started doing this (to me only) about a month ago.I adopted him 2 years ago, so i am not sure when he was fixed, but he has never acted like a typical male cat, never sprayed or anything. I talked to another person about it, and they said it is possible that he is picking up on my monthly cycle. That ended, but he didnt stop. I am planning a wedding that is very near; is it possible that my stress is getting to him, and causing this weird behavior? It is almost every night, and he acts just like “nicole’s” cat… its really disturbing…im glad im not the only one with this issue…

(24) emma says:

my 5 year old cat has allways done this. but i would NEVER scold him for doing something natural. for the people who tell their cats how disgusting and wrong and bad they are, well how would you feel if you were…well you know… and someone walks in and squirts you with cold water and tells you how disgusting and wrong and bad you are then smacks yer ass (well actually, some humans actually get into that but thats another forum topic alltogether) i laugh and tell my cat how cute he is when he does it. he will start to chirp at me and give me “love bites” wich is suppose to be like when they bite the neck of the female. then he trys to mount my arm but dosnt really know what he is doing. so he ends up dancing around on my arm with his back legs while latching on with his love bite. i let him do what he’s gotta do. he acts so fustraited caues he cant figure out how to really do it and cause my arm isnt a female cat.. i just rescued another siamese, he is three and my fat little innocent jiggly puff looking kitty. he started to mount a female i rescued who is in heat. (both my male cats are fixed by the way) he mounted her and now thats all he can think about when i let her come downstairs around him. she stays upstairs with her mother, and two younger sisters who are only like 6 months old. so my cat started to try to mount the babys too! i do tell him no on that one, cause thats child molestation! they arnt even in heat so i tell him “mao mao, those are just babys!! you cant do that!” and i seperate them. he used to just play with the girls. i would call him uncle mao mao. but now he is like an old perverted molesting uncle. they arnt in heat, and he still tries to do it. maybe the scent from the mother and daughter cats who are in heat is on the babys and he thinks they are in heat too. he dosnt try to mount this other cat i rescued who is pregnant. they are buddies actually, but after she has the kittens, i wonder how long it will be before he starts to try to mount them too.
so, let your cats be who they are. no one should be medicating or trying to fix nature. and no one should ever smack a cat, they are very fragile and you can damage their kidneys. if its really a problem and they are obbsessing about it, well yes, a squirt bottle can be used if its turning into a rape situation and affecting the other cats. then the horny cat will have to just go in a corner and lick himself when he feels horny. but occational humping, and a cat mounting your leg or arm is not a big deal. if its all they think about and do, then i guess testing to see if there is some kind of imbalance would be ok, but to just medicate a cat cause it offends you or bothers your sleep isnt cool. let them hump their stuffed toys in peace… its not that bad and actually kinda cute and funny…

(25) Mr Jones says:

I’ve owned my cat since he was a kitten, we got him from a shelter along with this female cat. We didnt get them spayed or neutered right away, nor at the same time. The female cat got spayed about a week before the male got neutered. All in all I say we had owned the male cat for three weeks before he got neutered. About three months ago I noticed him milk treading at the foot of my bed. And it annoyed me because he would only get on my bed and do it when I was going to sleep. But I payed no mind because I had been told milk treading was a sign of happyness. I didnt want to scold him and make him think I hated him or something. Eventually I would fall asleep and be woke in the middle of the night to him milk treading, then shaking. I would wake still with my eyes clothes and feel him doing it, then when I finally look, he was mounting the clumps in the covers and, I guess, humping them. Now I assumed he was humping them. My sister said that when she caught him doing it she pushed him over and saw his penis. So I am quite certain That this is what we’re all seeing. Im not entirely sure if neutering rids a cat of his sexual drive.

My altered male still gets erections, and even though he has 24/7 access to an intact female in heat, he’s incapable of mating with her. it’s not that he’s spent from humping pillows, or that he can’t “get it up,” he just has no skills in that department. after a couple of thrusts, he’ll just give up and start licking himself while my female moans what are surely degrading and emasculating curses in cat language. it’s as if he’s a child with the body of an adult, and he can’t quite wrap his mind around the concept of sex. is that weird?

I have 4 cats, 2 boys and 2 girls. they are 6 months and 3 months old and none are fixed. The oldest boy will sometimes mount the oldest female and bite her neck, but thats all. he doesnt try to hump her or anything but it seems like this could be a sexual behavior anyways. I was worried that i needed to get him neutered soon, but then he did it to the boy cat too so i dont know if its just a dominance thing or a sex thing.

We have a 5 year old male cat who has been fixed. Lately he has started to get horny with my heated blanket. As soon as he sees it, he jumps on the bed to lay down. And whenever the urge comes on, he goes to town on it. Kind of creeping my husband out because as he does it, he stares at my husband like he’s a piece of meat! Glad to hear i’m not the only one with a cat like this. I had never heard of this before i found this page, so i wanted to post this as well.

October 23, 2007 at 5:45 pm
(34) Kymball says:

My cat displays the same behaviors. It’s pretty much directed at me but only when i’m covered with a blanket or quilt.(He’s a year and a half, neutered male. I’ve had him since he was 5 months old and I’m the primary caretaker and only female in the house.)Then he finds a spot on the blanket and starts kneading, then he moves his back legs into position over my leg or arm and kinda just rocks side to side but not in a “humping” motion. I too wasn’t sure if it was residual milking behavior, though he stayed with his mother up until she started to wean them herself at 8-10weeks old. However, the behavior definately has a sexual connotation to it, so now i just gently push him away with my foot like another cat me do to hint disinterest, he usually comes right back, but if I keep pushing him away he eventually stops and I’ve found the behavior diminishing.

(35) Lola says:

My cat does this as well. He’s a neutered stray I took in about 3 years ago, and is estimated to be about 5 years old. He starts out with what seems like ‘making muffins’ on my lap (and only ever directed at me) but then the whole scene turns weird and he gets this intense look on his face, flicks his tail upwards a few times, and just starts trying to hump my leg… I don’t necessarily like it, but I would never scold or medicate him over it. There’s no harm being done, and my best friend put it this way: she said, ‘you’re the only thing he’s got going in his life, you’re the only thing that moves… can you blame him?’ Sounds about right! He brings so much joy into my life, it’s the least I can do to let him get his jollies especially since it’s so funny!

I have a male cat who was neutered about 1 yr. ago after getting my female pregnate. I never did get “Sophie” fixed due to financial issues. Although they still “do it” when she goes in heat, I assume he is shooting blanks, so to speak. Now sophie nipples are PINK and I think she may be pregnate again. I know for a fact she didn’t get outside because she is terrified of the outdoors. Is it possible that Ricco’s neutering didn’t take? Any ideas?? It definitately Ricco and no one else!! I so confused??

Omg, well, now I know what’s wrong with my cat(he’s a horn dog!). I found it a little weird that he was massaging my stomach the other day. Then when he started to bite me through my shirt I set him on the floor. Today I saw him doing that same massage thing on my pillow, so I got online to see what’s up with that. As I read similar stories I looked back over to him and he was DOING IT with my pillow! Now I get it! He was trying to hump me the other day. I’ve had him since he was about a month old, He’s been awesome when it came to litter training. But twice now he has peed in my closet. I wanted to strangle him, He looked right at me and peed! lol, I guess that has something to do with his new hobby(humping). I dont want to scold him, but, Its my pillow. Should I get him some stuffed animals or something? WHAT DO I DO? And the peeing is just not cool, wow is that smell hard to remove. I couldnt find anything else on cats humping, how do I get this under control? Do I get it under control? How do I make him stop peeing! I heard something about putting lemon on the new area he’s choosing for a latrin.
ANYTHING? ANYONE?

(40) Sarah says:

I can’t believe other people have had this problem, too! In the last six months or so, my 4-year-old neutered male has kneaded the throw I keep on my couch. His nose turns bright pink, and if I touch him he meows really loudly. I usually push him off the couch, and he licks his little red rocket. It’s so in appropriate. I adopted him when he was 1.5 years old after a family nextdoor to my friend’s home moved out and abandoned him. He is an only cat. My vet said he appeared to be neutered. I actually would welcome the news that he isn’t fully neutered because that may explain his other behavioral problem of peeing on my futon when I’m gone for more than 10 hours at a time, and it would be a quick fix to get him fixed.

Same here. I have a two-year-old male cat, neutered sometime before turning one-year-old. He especially likes to hump feet.

I don’t scold him or anything (he’s just a cat, after all). But, I have found that he can be distracted by toys, especially the laser light. So, now when he starts humping, I just distract him and give him some exercise. It works really well.

(44) Carol says:

So glad that I’m not the only one with a horny neutered male cat! My sister’s had cats all her life and had never seen this behavior before in a neutered one. It’s embarrassing because he only does it to me. If I try to stop him he gives this weird sounding meow and tries to bit me. It freaks my husband out so I just push the cat off me when he does this. My husband insisted I call the vet re the cat’s weird behavior but I found this site which has lots of ideas. It’s not because he lacks attention, this cat is spoiled rotten! I think the reason may be related to the fact that recently we had a shih tzu dog we had to put to sleep. Our cat used to jump on him as in playing but once in a while I’d catch the cat trying to hump him. (Esp. after I gave the dog a bath.) He didn’t get away with his aggressiveness because the dog would growl and bark loudly at the cat and run with the cat chasing him. So I guess since the dog is gone, I’m the lucky one to receive his loving affections! I also did recently start spraying him with a water bottle to try to get him to stay off the kitchen counter. I’m going to try what Lowell said about distracting the cat from humping me or soft blankets by distracting him with a toy he likes. I don’t want the cat humping my grandchildren! I have a grandchild coming to spend the weekend today so we’ll see how it goes. But glad to hear others are in the same embarrassing situation as me in re to their very “horny” male cat. Right now he’s laying beside my computer all stretched out sleeping like an innocent angel. Seems like he knows I’m saying critical things about him so trying to show me how sweet he can be. Cats are silly beings, you never know what to expect next! Thank the Lord that so far he still uses his litter box and not my new carpet! :>) There’s always something to be thankful for in frustrating situations, whether with my cat or my husband. Hee, Hee!!!

Great! Glad to find out that this behavior is common. But, what is the answer for it? Is it a testicle thing or what? I have asked vets & they can’t even give me a reasonable answer. I talked to the vet that did the neutering and he said it had to do with certain odors, and advised a different litter. that has not worked. I liked the advise of getting hormone levels and check to see if can do anything to stop this. So annoying!

My mom had a cat that was rather co-dependant. He felt that he had to hump pillows. We would tell him no and that usually stopped his behavior. I think it’s most likely a behavioral problem, but most times it a natural thing that needs to be redirected. My husband and I have a fixed female that sprays on occassion. They are just dirty things anyway. I’m not a huge cat fan as you can tell, so I say “shoot ‘em.”

Hello, I thought I had the only horny neutered male. I had to have him neutered twice because they couldn’t find one testicle the first time. Poor little guy. He crawls up on my shoulder and lays like a baby. Pretty soon he puts his paws around my neck and sticks his nose in my ear and starts purring and moving and quivering in his hind quarters. He actually gets an erection. Gross. And he only does it with me. Sometimes he will crawl on my pillow at night and try to hump my head and I push him off the bed. Does this ound familiar to anyone else? I am going to call my vet. He was 10 months old when I had his neutered and he is now 15 months. He doesn’t spray though, thank god.

This may be too much info, but I have to know what’s wrong with my cat!
He’s a neutered male about 1.5 years old, and very loving. He doesnt bite or anything. THe other day I “pleasured” myself and got up to go the bathroom afterwards, i was going for a shower. I come back out and hes grinding the spot on my bed where my scent was and kneading the blanket. He was basically humping the same spot I had just finished and I was incredibly grossed out! Ive never seen this kind of behavior before, and i usually make sure hes not around if i get the urge. Is this common? do cats respond to human body scents? i just think its weird…and defintely disconcerting.

Yes Laura, it does. One old cat of ours did the same thing back in his somewhat younger days. When it “clicked” what was going on we stopped letting him near anybody’s head! (we found it both funny and gross) He’s still around but he hasn’t been messing with anyone’s hair for a few years now, thankfully.

I have a 15 year old neutered male and he won’t stop mounting my spayed 14 year female. He bites her neck and looks like he is trying to have sex with her. He used to do it once in a while now he does it several times a day. She just lays there. Sometimes she gets away and runs a few feet away and then looks back like she is waiting for him. Most of the time she acts like she does not like it and she gets mad. I pulled him off her yesterday and I saw is genitals. Its totally freaking me out. Why are they doing this at their age? Why now? I read that he is trying to tell her he is the boss. He has always been bossy. I drew the line when he started doing it in front of my company. Its got to stop its embarrising. What should I do? Help….

Gotta love them but I don’t love that behavior. funny but creepy.

Clearly, lots of neutered cats do this; it’s normal; don’t get so freaked out about it. My male (neutered) cat goes through phases where he can’t seem to get enough of my arm when I’m watching TV, etc. I admit it used to seem a little freaky, but by now it’s just amusing. If it gets annoying, I push him off (that’s enough for now, pal!); otherwise, I indulge him; then off he goes to lick himself. Happy happy cat. Moral: don’t be so uptight. No meds for this behavior, no vet, no human prudery applied to an animal. Your cat isn’t a perv.

I have a 2 1/5 year old neutered male and he’s always a’humpin this little stuffed cat we gave him as a toy when he was a baby. We’ll put the toy away but one hour later it’s been dragged out and molested again. First he gets on top and starts moaning and meowing obnoxiously and then he start doing his “sexy dance”. He crouches down and wiggles his butt around all the while screaming in ecstasy. It sounds like he’s caught in a bear trap the way he carries on. We mostly don’t mind because he rarely tries to “get sexy” with us.

Every once in a whole he climbs up my shoulders and tries to make it with my hair. He growls and bites and get’s all crazy if we try to stop him. Thank god he doesn’t get full on boners though, that would freak me out. I just wish he’s shut up, if he wants to get it on he should do it quietly, I don’t want to know about it.

My husband and I think it’s hilarious except we wish he wasn’t so friggen open about it. He’s our resident exhibitionist.

(58) Sarah says:

My 8-year-old male cat decided about a year ago that my arm is the sexiest thing on the planet. I have always taken him to the bed when I got home from work so he would have a chance to “purr and paw” (he only purrs on the bed). A couple years ago, my boyfriend and I noticed he was “pawing with all fours” all over the blankets. We thought he was being overly zealous with his affection but did not conclusively agree that he was humping the blankets.

Then one evening last year, as he was pawing with all fours, I saw him look longingly at my arm. He started scratching it while humping the bed. I let him do it since we were in the midst of moving and wanted the move to go as smoothly as possible. In the new place, he contined his relations with my arm, making so many scratch marks that I was embarrassed to wear short sleaves. Eventually, he started using my arm more as a focal point for the activity, stepping on it with all paws at various times while turning around in circles and humping the blankets. The scratching is now at a minimum. If I touch him at all during one of these sessions, he makes the weirdest shriek, as if he’s being electrocuted.

He has gone for my boyfriend’s arm a couple times when it was available, but he seems to prefer my arm. While we are concerned that letting him do this is not socially acceptable (at least to our species), we know that criticizing him will lower his self-esteem. He seems utterly dejected if we laugh or talk about his activities in an analytical way.

I don’t know if Candace is still around — she wrote in August 2007, but if she hasn’t heard from anyone else, having a neutered FEMALE cat that still displays behavior associated with estrus is not the same as having a neutered male cat that still gets erections, etc. A female cat that still cycles means that the surgery was unsuccessful — she is still reproductively intact (given that this was written two years ago, Candace may have learned this the hard way, by now!).

I’d really like to read more of the science behind the male cat behavior. Anybody know enough about cat endocrine systems to understand what might be driving this? Any Vets read these posts who could comment? It would seem to me that if an animal suddenly changed such a central behavior well into adulthood (several posts speak of cats suddenly picking this up at 7 or 10) then I would be concerned about possible tumors in endocrine structures that can lead to abnormally high levels of circulating hormones.

Our own neutered male has pretty much always done this, but the frequency seems to wax and wane with no apparent rhythm – and he was absolutely lost the one time he was around a female in heat (before we got her fixed). He just thought she was being strange and would leave her and go find a blanket even if he was interested in “humping” something.

There’s got to be some science to this that is understood — but I haven’t been able to find anything, to date. My two main concerns are: 1) to be sure that it’s not a sign of any sort of endocrine problem and 2) it would be nice to understand what’s going on enough to know if not treating these hormonal surges in some way with a cat who has no way of participating in the behavior around which they are organized, isn’t akin to torture — would it be more humane to address this somehow? Is it better to “redirect” or just let him have his fun? frustration? with the blanket?

Anyway, here’s the message about the female I was referring to at the beginning:

(25) Candace says:

I have a female cat that I had neutered and she will act like she is in heat for about a week and then she is fine for a while. Whats up with this?? Her disposition changes and she is mean and will his at me when this happens.

I never thought I would find a forum like this, but I am so glad! Just adopted a “young adult” male cat from a kill shelter and his days were numbered…Had been in a cage 2 months after being picked up by animal control due to injuries and illness..A vet got him back to health and because he was so much of a “mutt”, I felt like he would never be picked, so I took him…
Adore him, totally—but, he is doing some weird stuff–sexual??—and the vet seems to have no understanding of what I mean….When I read these posts, I was stunned that I am not alone!!
Within hours of getting him home, he went for my arm…I felt it was sexual due to his back legs action and the weird look on his face and his strange ‘chirpy’ meow…Then he started within days with my head and ear while I was sleeping…He is not declawed and it hurts!!!
I questioned if he was REALLY neutered, and the vet said yes. Could this be simply an insecurity thing?? A seperated from his mother too early thing?? He can “make biscuits” on my head for 30 minutes if I let him!! Could he be reliving nursing his mother??? HELP!!!!

(64) Catherine says:

I’m having a similar problem. My cat Wicked is probably about 1.5-2 years old. I can’t know for sure because I found him as a stray outside an apartment complex a year ago. He was an adolescent male. We got him neutered immediately and he has NEVER shown any signs of male behavior since. He does not pee in strange places, he does not posture, is not at all dominant, doesn’t bite, claw, and isn’t very vocal other than when trying to catch my attention (like to let him outside or he’s hungry).

But he does the same thing. Mostly he just really likes my bedsheets and blankets. He gets up on my bed and kneads with his front feet. Then he’ll involve his back feet. He doesn’t waste much time before he’s shaking and obviously in a sexual manner. Like with all the others, we have a spayed female cat around. He isn’t interested in her in the least. But it’s also not a dominance thing because we have another neutered male cat around and they’re BEST FRIENDS—-but he’s definitely the one in control of the relationship.

Wicked seems to be more agreeable than the others mentioned here. I can usually solve this problem by gently pushing him over onto the blankets, where he decides he’s too comfortable to get back up and try it all over again. But occasionally he likes to do it in my lap or when I’m laying on my bed he’ll crawl up on my stomach and lay on me and knead and be rather sexually charged. But he doesn’t claw, bite, or try to hold things down. He doesn’t hump body parts or specific items. And least of all, he doesn’t show any aggression when I try to discourage him from the behavior. He’s very cooperative. And silent. No chirping, yowling, meowing, or strange noises. (Though he snores when he sleeps. ‘_’; )

I’m not overly concerned about the behavior because he’s not aggressive about it. And it is fairly natural. I’d love to understand what it’s happening but I see no indication of anyone understanding that.

My friend has a hypothesis that he thinks I’m his mate. That he views me as his sexual partner. And maybe that’s it.

It’s undeniable that all the people here have been particularly close to their cats. And most of you are women. (And one man seemed to complain that his female cat appeared to view him as a potential sexual partner.) Maybe that’s contributing to this behavior.

I’m used to it because my dog, when he was younger, did the same thing. He viewed me as his mate and it showed. Less humping but more obvious mate behavior (as far as dogs go). My cat appears to be doing the same thing. I’m not the only woman in the house. There’s also my mother. He shows significantly less interest in her than me. And no interest at all in my dad aside from occasional pets.

In any case, I’d like to reduce the behavior because I’m somewhat worried about damage to my blankets, sheets, clothes, etc. I have some things that don’t hold up so well against the claw treatment (satin, lace, etc). And with two roommates I’ll be moving in with in August, I’m afraid that he might turn his affections to Kaylee. She’s a young woman and I’d hate for her to have to deal with this extremely awkward situation. I wouldn’t want her to come home to find Wicked humping her bed sheets, stealing her underwear, or trying to hump her (which thankfully he hasn’t done to anyone yet).

At least he’s agreeable, though, eh?

(65) Sara says:

Yup, similar story of middle aged cat that was neutered at animal shelter when young and did not display any of this male mounting behavior until later in life rather suddenly and for no apparent reason. Nothing obvious has changed in household. WE are close and have a great relationship. He does it just to me as a single live alone female and so far only in bed at night. Up close and personal usually my upper arm, shoulders, or neck area. Was a bit scary at first as I would wake suddenly to a fairly firm bite and sometimes also the kneading with claws on my skin. Not sure I’ve found a solution but by blowing on his face I may have backed him off to biting the covers instead of me and he now is a little further away on the bed. So now I let him do his dance on the covers and that’s usually it for the night. It is almost impossible to interupt it as he won’t release his grip and even if I do distract him, he shrieks like his is in pain (yes a different vocalization than he’s ever done before)and will just go back at it a short time later. I think I will take him in the vet due to the apparent suddeness of this behavior. Interestingly, the one other behavior that is also new is a sporadic yoddling sound like stray outdoor male cats announcing their territory. I am curious if we are seeing a rise in such behaviors perhaps related to hormonal mimicing substances in our environment and foods. I have had my own female problems perhaps relating to my own hormonal imbalance. I also wonder if the cat is picking up on fluctuation in my hormones since I am starting to experience menapausal symptoms.

He scrunches his back up and makes noise when i try to disturb him. I dont know why he does this, i think that now that he is neutered and is not aloud outside to see any female cats he gets horny and tired of not being aloud to have sex and since he cant he has to do it on his own. I think of it as he is masterbating which is still kind of wierd but i guess must be a natural feeling for a neutered cat. If you do know why cats do this please tell me. I would loved to know the honest truth.:)

LOL, I was glad to see that I’m not the only one with this problem. My cat (neutered, declawed and saved from the Humane Society) started climbing up on me late at night and kneading with all four feet. He gives off this weird meow and will try and bite me if I touch him. He doesn’t bother my partner only me. I thought at first it was some kind of coniption (sp?) fit or some bi-polar disorder, he’d keep doing it until I shooed him off the bed. I haven’t noticed any humping but hell it’s 4 in the morning. I have always been afraid he’d bite my face since he edges closer to my face with this weird look on his face while he’s kneading and making this gutteral meowing sound. My solution? (NO one has offered one) The old spray bottle. A good squirt of cold water does the trick. I am going to keep doing this so see if if provides a long term solution. He hates it!

My cat (4 yrs old and neutered) gets overly excited at bedtime and will begin to try to mate with his favorite kneading blanket. I read online that it doesn’t help to punish him because the behavior is natural to him, so I told my grandmother who is a vet (although she’s been out of practice for a while.) Anyway, she recommended a shot of estrogren (which we got at our local vet) and he was fixed! There was no change in his regular affection but no more humping!
PS. we did have to “shop around” a bit to find a vet that was willing to inject the cat.

Wow, so many many purr-verts out there! Ours, Freddie, is 3 years, neutered at nine months (he had been ill as a rescue kitten), and has been humping blankets/teddies/pillows while staring at me with weird glassy eyes for about a year and a half now. There is a definite erection and some kind of fluid afterwards, yuk. He doesn’t spay, or pee anywhere he shouldn’t and there are no other cats in the home. The only actual person he tries to hump is my husband, when he wears a cosy fleecy jumper, it is hilarious. He is normally a wee sweet scaredy cat, but from time to time will just rush at me, grab my sleeve or bare arm in his teeth and sink in the claws, while giving my arm a good kicking with his back legs–not good! I think it is to do with what is going on outside, he is humping several times a day at the moment, but there are two new cats I have noticed using his wall and entering his garden/territory and we have had a lot of workmen in recently and the cat just loathes workmen. We try to distract our randy kitty and give him stuff to hunt and chase round the house, which works sometimes. BUT, am going to see the vet just to check his hormones out, as I do think his behaviour is becoming more and more like an un-neutered adult male tom, he has started to wander off for hours and hours at a time too. I wonder if he was vasectomied down the rescue centre rather than castrated?? I did mention to another vet a while ago, and all she could say was he “still has feelings”. Well, I have feelings too! And so does my arm…

I didn’t expect this many. My case is slightly different. Only slightly. I have a neutered boy Manx named Roy and lately he’s been doing the, “I think I’ll try and hump you” thing. The slight difference is it isn’t random, it’s every night, only to me, only when I’m going to bed and he’s on the bed. This has been going on for a few months. It didn’t happen before and he’s been sleeping with me, next to my head almost since we got him. He sleeps with me every night that I’m with my mom and I give him light bops to let him know I really don’t approve. He usually stops eventually when I ignore him long enough and he realizes I’m not going to move my arm to a more accessible place. It only happens when I turn of the light and get into bed. He’ll sleep normally just on my bed, without me there.

But his stamina is quite impressive and he bites the snuggie while awkwardly positioning himself to make a go of it. I have another cat also fixed who doesn’t do this, and I was wondering if this isn’t a way to mark his territory or something. No clue but there are sure to be more cats doing the same.

If your male cat is neutered and he humps a stuffed animal (mine does this to my little boy’s former stuffed animal that we have since totally just given to the cat!) but should I be worried he is going to actually release some fluid on it? Eww. So far no howling or humping people. Just the stuffed animals, but should I be looking for things that need to be cleaned up or does the neutering make it so there’s no actual fluid released? Ew.

Delighted to know I’m not the only one getting loved up by my cat – was worried I smelt like a female cat in heat or something. Tom in question is 2 and a half, un-neutered (not through want of trying, he is a top escapologist) now I see that castrating him won’t necessarily end the problem, at a bit of a loss… I know sexuality is a very social thing for cats – I used to have a Tom (castrated)who had a serious thing going with a little male neighbour kitten, we were woken up one night by the sound of his mother growling & there he was, making it with this little kitten on our bedroom floor in front of his mother – I broke it up and took the kitten outside but 5 minutes later he was back in chirruping at my tom – so I just left em to it, despite his mother’s disaproval.
So why is my current cat trying to get some love with my arm? He’s very specific and only does it when i’m in bed reading my son a bedtime story – he’s always been quite aggresively friendly but only recently trying to actually have sex. Help?

Then we got a female 8 year old and he started in on her. I am reading the emails and I kind of figured that this isn’t all that unique. He’s a cat that the vet tech called spicy, because he is impossible to examine, without sedation. Maybe it’s all part of the same bundle.

I’m so relieved to know that this has happened with other people too! I have an 8 month old male cat, who I’ve had since he was about 3 or 4 weeks old. I adopted him at a very young age and he hadn’t been with his mother for very long at all. Since he was a baby he would always nuzzle on my furry blankets when he wanted to go to sleep. Almost like he would do to a momma cat when he’s looking for milk. I always felt bad because he never could find what he was looking for in the blanket but I just let him nuzzle until he fell asleep! At about 5 months tthe nuzzling turned into humping! And sometimes I’ll be under the blanket and he’ll hump my leg! I would never scold him for it because its a natural thing to do I guess, but its so weird because he’s been fixed for months! He’ll make weird little grunting sounds too if he gets frustrated and can’t find a good “spot”. I’m just relieved kind of because my cat doesn’t spray and nothing comes out in result of it, except for his little “thing”. Soo weird to say but you know what I mean! Its almost kind of funny because after he’s done doing his business he’ll roll over and fall asleep with the HUGEST smile on his face every single time! Hahahahaha. Just glad to know I’m not alone!

A few of you have mentioned your cat humping your pillows, clothes, blankets, etc. My cat did that when he first figured out sex so we immediately got him a stuffed animal. We’ve even replaced his toy several times and he’s never gone back to pillows. With a new toy we make sure to put it near his scratching post or somewhere else that he spends time and we put cat nip on it. After that, he knows it’s his new “girlfriend” :-)

Ok I thought my cat just had issues because my males cats in the past have never exhibited this type of behavior before.
My neutured male cate approx 5 years old starts kneading biscuits we call it on my legs when I am in bed under my covers. I had to hide all the furry blankets that’s how it all began I believe. Once I wake up I’ll try n knock him off the bed. He then gets very mad meows loudly and pounces on the female cat who is sleeping next to me. Then he bites her kneck and mounts her and meows at her. I’m just glad that others have the same issues and nothing is wrong with my cat.

Thank you everyone whom posted. With your experience in neutered cat horny behavior I was hoping you could help. I have 2 cats both 1 year old. Wes is 2 weeks older than Buttercup, and I’ve had them since they were 6 weeks old. They fell in love immediately and didn’t start getting sexual till around 6 months. Not getting them fixed soon enough resulted in babies. (All 6 babies healthy and have already found homes) After the babies were born Wes wanted to make babies more right away, and she wouldn’t have anything to do with it. He was so persistant and she got so mad
at him it resulted in her hissing and clawing. And him trying all again in 5 minutes. 2 weeks ago Wes started straying, and I made an appointment with his dr… He was fixed today…. So here’s the problem, he’s not home for 30 minutes and he’s already trying to mount her. And she’s still like hell no. Seeing as I have a few kittens still around waiting to be old enough to go to their new homes, I have to keep their still breastfeeding mama happy and safe from rape attempts. So far all I’ve tried (besides taking his manhood) is a water squirt gun, but he just tries humping her again in a few minutes. Is he just reacting to her smell? Is he just testing that the rest of his junk still works? Was the procedure unsuccessful? If she kicked him in the privates could that affect his healing? (cause she did) Or is he just an extreamly horny cat? Thanks
for reading, and much happiness to you and your cats.

My 4 year old neutered male cat began the kneading with the paws and humping my wool blanket last winter. Now I have an 8 month kitten and he wants to do it with him – a lot!. Do you suppose it is possible that our cats are getting hormones through the commercial cat food that they eat?

(91) Rebecca says:

I’m a veterinary technician with 10 years in the clinic… I have a 5 year old male cat who is the live of my life! My bf and I live together with our 4 dogs and 2 cats…. Within the last 2 weeks he has started humping me and only me and only on my stomach…

As confusing as it seems there are generally explanations and I hope I can help some of you out with some answers.

First of all if your male cat is castrated which is what neutering generally means (it can also be used to describe a females procedure as it simply means “neutralizing the reproductive organs”) he CANNOT impregnate a female no matter how much he tries!! Lol if he had a retained testicle, extremely rare in cats, that could not be located during the neuter he still has testosterone produced and CAN impregnate a female.

Most of the time spaying and neutering your pets will end or dramatically decrease the frequency of mating behaviors, however, after the procedures are done it still could take as much as several weeks for the hormones to flush from the body….so don’t expect mr frisky to become a couch potato over night.

Females that have been spayed and are bred could display what is known as a false pregnancy…. Their minds think then are pregnant to the point that their bodies believe it…. Some even swell in the tummy and start producing milk. If that happens to your females and they are spayed, you need to see your vet, although mostly it’s harmless…. Just kind of depressing for her.

As for the “inappropriate” humping by a neutered male cat….. There are many many reasons for this, you as the owner will have to figure out what’s up with your kitty.

If the cat has been neutered from an early age (6 months or earlier, as that is when puberty hits and the reproductive organs mature, so yes, they can get preggo or get another kitty preggo at that age) and has not started displaying the signs (humping, excessive biting, kneading, etc) until middle age or later get an overall check up with your vet. Make note of any other abnormalities in habits… Eating, drinking, bathroom habits, vocalizing, excessive sleeping (more than usual, theg are cats afterall), etc and tell your vet as much info as you can.

Next, if the cat has focused on one human for this desire the human may want to consider a physical. There are lots of instances where cats react to pregnancy, ovarian/testicular tumors/cysts, or plain and simple hormone flux, like menstrual cycles, menopause, or high stress levels even. If everything checks out with the human OR IF it goes for toys, blankets, or whatever non living sex buddies it’s got, here are some possibilities there.

If a cat becomes particularly close to a person they can display certain behsviors for that reason. The paw kneading (making biscuits) is smthg they do while nursing from their mothers to increase the milk flow. It is a very affectionate display from them and most of the time is accompanied by loud purring and a very happy expression. This is NOT SEXUAL in nature and should make you feel really good that kitty is comparing you to mommy in the whole “I love you SSSOOOOO much” way. This is a good thing, although it can lead to humping…. I’ll explain why.

Biting can be either play, in which case ig needs to be taught not to bite too hard or at all, or as sort of a foreplay and to catch on to the female during breeding. Here’s the difference… A play bite will usually be more of a bite and release deal, and can change in speed and pressure applied. A mating bite is generally consistent all the way through, in the fact that they generally won’t let go without some serious persuassion, and the pressure applied in the bite generally stays the same throughout… Not hard enough to break skin but deffinatly mildly painful is pretty average.

Humping other pets in the house…. Thisbis generally a sign of dominance, the Humperdinck being top dog, or cat if you will, and the humped being the lesser or the two in the hierarchy. Perfectly normal and it’s better to let them work it out on their own terms if possible. I don’t recommend punishing this unless of course, the point has clearly been made that kitty A is alpha (head honcho) and kitty B is just getting perpetually reminded of that without struggle…. I mean, enough is enough. If YOU as the human can tell who the alpha animal is in a multiple animal household I assure you the animals certainly knew a long time ago…. No need for incessant humping at this point.

If one is fixed and the other isn’t you can expect some confussed mating behavior there, no need to punish because they’re doing the natural thing here, although I would seriously consider neutering both/all animals… Better for everyone.

There is also of course the situation of a hand raised cat or one that was weaned too early. They generally do odd things and alot of times nurse on things/people their entire lives by kneading with their paws and licking or sucking around the same area. It’s an attachment thing, just let ‘em be kitties. It’s also done out of love or at least like a vast majority of the time, you should be flattered.

There are plenty more situations and solutions but these are the basics. I hope I’ve been able to help with some questions or concerns. If not, you cam always call and speak with a local vet, or find an animal behaviorist in your area. Remember, cats have individual personalities alot like their people and the answer or reason for one is usually not that way for another. Good luck to you all and don’t forget to laugh and enjoy these times with your beloved pet, although personally, I’ll never love getting tummy humped at 3 am by my overly happy hairless kitty, but I deffinatly get a laugh!!

@Rebecca- Great post. Its been a while so I hope you are still reading. You mentioned that you would explain why the kneading can turn to humping but did not see that explained as you went on. I have an 8 year old cat that only humps me. He started kneading a stuffed animal that looks like him but never noticed any humping..its possible though. However about 4 mths ago, he started only being interested in me. He still likes the stuffed toy which I present to distract him but he comes right back to me in a few seconds or will go back and forth between my arm and the toy for the kneading and then hump my arm. Sometimes he even leaves “a deposit” when he is done which is what kinda grosses me out. I usualyy let him do his thing as its not hurting anyone but since the “deposits” have just begun I am wanting more info on the behavior. I can get over this but I just want to know that I am not causing a problem with him trying to dominate me or something. What do you think?

My cat was also a stray, I took him in at 3/4 months and was just neutered when he was 7 months. He loves to hump, I thought the spraying would end after he is neutered…WRONG! He still pees in my bed at least once a week, he knows it makes me upset and he still does it. He also enjoys humping my once stuffed animal, Rattatoulie (the rat character from Disney), they are both the same size and whenever he gets rough, Ratattoulie is the solution. It is like his blow up doll, play buddy, and non-living Nanny. I never worry when Ratatoulie is around. The cat drags the stuffed animal around, humps it, plays with it and it is a great break from me and the toy on the stick. I highly suggest finding a stuffed animal the size of your cat to help with the unwanted humpings.

My 6 year old rescue cat has an issue. I was very concerned because mr. Cat started off by kneading a wool blanket and in the course of a month progressed to full on humping my leg and my boyfriends leg indiscriminately. We rolled him over and saw that he was “excited.” I was shocked and embarrassed for him. It’s been happening more and more. I called a cat psychologist who wanted $500 (I am not kidding) to do a home visit and prescribe corrective behavior. We did not want to pay the fee and now the problem lingers on. I do have a spray bottle but lack the resolve to use it.

And any time were intimate the next morning he displays this behavior . Thanks

(100) Jo says:

Thank you Tom for the link, and Rebecca for post. Although I’m amused & surprised by all the stories here, it’s nice to have some answers about WHY?

I’ve had male cats all my life, and never saw this behavior until recently. The perpetrator, C had undescended testicles. He was castrated and spayed, like a female, to make sure they got it all. When he was about 8 years old, he started mounting our other neutered male cat, K. K didn’t appreciate being woken by his brother’s teeth in his neck. We thought it was odd, and decided the vet must have missed some testicular tissue.

C died 3 years ago. I adopted a new male kitten, J. K adored J, and they are very loving to each other. Recently, J has started mounting K, just like C used to. K doesn’t do anything to encourage it. He lays on his side, growling about the teeth in his neck.

It has to be more than coincidence that two cats did/do it to K. We wondered if K was exhuding some kind of phermones. I never considered that the odor could be human. J has been especially horny this week. I just talked to my daughter, who is here for a visit. Yes, she is having her period. Perhaps that’s the trigger. Hmm…

After skimming through these posts, I guess I’m glad that K is the only love object. Not sure that I’d like my cat mating with my arm. (OK, I did let a cockatiel mate with my hand once, just to see how he did it. He has since decided that a female cockatiel is more satisfying.)

I have a male cat that is about a year old. I had him fixed at about 6 months.

Two weeks ago I laid on top of my bed next to him. He got up, stretched. He than sat down, started doing what looked like a dog dragging its but on the floor, and made a horrible face. I thought maybe he had gotten worms or something but he turned around and started cleaning himself and left a wet spot on the bed. I realized what he had done. Since then I have gotten him to repeat this behavior twice just by me lying on the bed.

The 3rd time I squirted him with a spray bottle, but no idea how to stop this behavior. Having to wash sheets multiple times in a week is getting old, but atleast they are clean.

February 20, 2011 at 6:09 pm
(102) Franny Syufy says:

Benjamin, from what you’ve described it sounds like your cat may have some problem with his anal sacs. They can become compacted, and a veterinarian should see him to make sure this hasn’t happened. Squirting him with a spray bottle is most definitely NOT a solution to a veterinary problem

(104) Sarah says:

Here is the solution to all your problems:

Your cat is humping the blankets, pillows, clothing, you etc. because it either wants attention, wants to cheer up or has a sexual urge.

My 4 year old neutral male cat has been humping my bath robe so I hung it up on the door. He always tries to get it down so now, he stops humping all together.

If you want them to stop, take away the thing that they’re humping.
It’s best just to leave them be, it’s caused by their hormones reacting, just like humans.

(107) Anoria says:

My neutered male does his little sexual ‘dance’ to my arm on a regular basis, sometimes several times a day! He never goes very far with it – he will just hold onto my sleeve (or the skin of my arm if I’m wearing short sleeves – ouch!) and knead while dancing around with his back legs. I’ve never observed his penis appearing, which is why I was confused about this behaviour until I read this page. What a godsend!

It seems from the other comments that it would be a good idea to get him a stuffed toy he can transfer his affections to. I don’t think there is anything wrong with a cat displaying this behaviour — it’s only natural — and I don’t want to punish him. But I also don’t want to be the focus of his affections. His treading on my arm is rather uncomfortable and awkward, and he does it at all kinds of awkward moments! A stuffed toy (cat sex doll?) it is.

Like others, I’ve found my cat very persistent with this behaviour. If I push him away he returns again and again, and he gets a death grip on my sleeve which is difficult to prise off. One thing I’ve found helpful is to grab the back of his neck — he will usually release and cease all sexual behaviour. He protests with a strange miaow, but he’ll give up and accept my refusal.

(108) Mu says:

My male, 8-y-o neutered cat does this. He used to just knead my belly or my leg on the couch but now it’s shifted to the humping.

I’ve tried some different tactics to get him to calm down: pushing him off just makes him more insistent, firmly scruffing him and holding him down (trying to show him who’s dominant) doesn’t work either.

The one thing that does? Gently petting him. I scratch his head, I stroke his back, I try to get him to lie down on the couch. It usually works and I have concluded that he’s not horny so much as he wants attention. Now. Right now.

(109) joan says:

I’ve had two male cats, neutered, that did this. One was neutered at 6 months, the other when already several years old (a rescue). I guess it’s just a normal behavior. Both cats are otherwise very well-mannered and don’t spray in the house or pee in the wrong places. They’re just loving guys.

(110) Lois says:

If a woman has a hysterectomy or a man has a vasectomy, do their sexual drives suddenly cease to exist?

So, why should some cat owners assume that when a cat has been spayed or neutered all their sexual urges are gone.

Anyone would be wrong to assume this.

Yes, cats that are spayed or neutered are less likely to become horny, want sex, but that doesn’t mean they will NEVER want some nookie lol :)

Cats have sexual urges and hormones just like humans. And some cats may want sex more than other cats, just like some humans may want sex more than other humans.

My 3 yr old male cat is neutered and sometimes kneads my blanket, me, or something soft. Sometimes he goes into the “throes of passion” and other times he’s trying to get comfortable. And when I notice he is getting too friendly with my arm, stomach, leg, back, I simply move him else where and let him do his thing.

I have thought about buying him his own personal girlfriend pillow or stuffed animal for such occasions so I don’t have to interrupt him during his “Meow time” haha.

Cats are not as complex as we think they are, they just need a little more understanding from us :)

Happy Autumn!

(112) Sam says:

Maybe instead of trying to ‘correct’ their behavior you should probably talk to your vets or a cat behavior specialist about WHY they are doing this. Animals are just that…ANIMALS they have urges and needs that are physically expressed.

My 5 year old neutered male just started to do this and instead of trying to scold him for humping I want to know why all the sudden this behavior has started. He has issues with my other female cat who seems to take a more dominant role; makes sense he would want to dominate something else in the household (i.e. the blankets, a pillow, my arm/head/leg). When he starts humping ME I gently push him off and try and give him affection by scratching only his head or ears. That way he gets attention but it’s not negative.

Treat your animal how you would want to be treated, I don’t think any of you would want someone swatting you away whenever you were in the mood or were frustrated at your living situation. Just sayin’

Such interesting — and amusing — reading! My neutered cat has been trying to mate with another of my neutered cats. Love the idea of a stuffed animal and will get one for my Lothario tomorrow. I do have a suggestion for lots of you, though. Although spraying with water may be an effective training tool sometimes, I think it’s mean, because cats don’t like getting wet. When I have to correct my cats’ behavior because they are doing something potentially harmful (such as when they try to run out the door) instead of spraying with water I give a quick *psst* with “canned air” (used to clean computers.) I NEVER spray near their faces or heads, just their back. They hate the sound and feel and stop what they are doing immediately. It’s to the point now when all I have to do is pick up the can and they are back to being little angels again!

Rebecca, Thank you for your answer.
My buddy has this behavior, and it made me question as to whether he was spayed or not. I was told he was when I adopted him 7 years ago, but seriously began to doubt he was, as he was found mounting the new fefemale addition to the family – it’s a, well, ummm, February/July romance, I believe!
I wasn’t sure, at first, he even really knew what to do, as he was rescued from a house, along with 64 or so other cats, at a VERY young age. He does watch tv, and took notes from an episode of Animal Planet, when lions were mating (yes, I have photos of him watching tv, was pretty cool!), and proceeded to attempt to mount my 25 lb Maine Coon mix – I wil never forget her surprised ”mmreoow?!” She has since passed on, and my buddy has meet a new ”friend!”
I have never sprayed him with water, nor smacked hom because of this behavior. Hell, I figure he’s not the only one in the animal kingdom who has these urges. He hasn’t really done the kneading & shaking much lately, probably because the little female is around now. Maybe that is the ”fix”….lol

So glad to found that it’s ‘natural’ but my husband shure doesn’t like it. In another forum, I found that a good trick is to distract them with a toy. I skimmed through the posts and didn’t see this, but if I missed it, my apologies.

How about a male cat who was neutered 12 HOURS prior and then tries to mount the female (who had kittens 9 days ago) to mate?? Dude cat had surgery to “drop the chalupas” and 12 freakin’ HOURS later is trying to get busy???

This happened today. Moose had his surgery at 8 this morning. By 8 this evening he got out of my room (trying to keep him quiet and away from the other cats) and headed straight for Chewy (new mama cat), continually trying to mount her. AAAAAAACK!

What is with this kitty??

Hey Beej,
Although the surgery removes the chalupas, the hormones will still be raging for awhile. And, as you’ve read from other posts, many neutered cats never lose the urge, especially if they were sexually active prior to the neuter, or if they were neutered later that 3 or 4 months at the latest.

I got one of mine (stray who decided he was moving in) neutered on Friday and he did the same – straight home and onto my arm. He was still off his face on the anaesthetic though, so I did wonder if that had something to do with the fact that he didn’t seem to notice that he’d had the surgery.

It’s Sunday now and he’s still getting a little too close… though now I seem to be able to distract him a little bit, sometimes, by stroking his ears or cheeks and giving him attention, which didn’t work before. I think I am going to try him with a stuffed toy as well.

There are really only 2 things that bother me about this – 1) I’m the object of his lust, and I find that very weird, and also distracting and impractical when I’m trying to do something and he’s latched onto my arm, which is also covered in scratches by the way, and 2) there are fluids. My sleeves just don’t stay clean anymore. I wonder if this is something that’ll stop once his hormones have died down a little? I’m happy to give him a blanket or toy to do his thing with, but it could get dirty (as in infections and stuff) if left for too long without being washed. Which it would be, as I can’t wash and dry a blanket or toy every single time he uses it.

Such a lovely little cat, and I really am flattered, but he’s not really my type…

Both are neutered and were done early , at just over 4 months as Oscar kept mounting Josey and it was getting upsetting for him. In the following years he still tried to mount him but then gave up. After that he now pleasures himself while he is washing his bits…..he has now started kneading the cushions while he is sleeping and has mounted my arm a couple of time……do you think he is just dreaming of what he might have been capable of if he hadn’t been sorted.????? They are both lovely cats but in 40 years of cat owning this is the first time I have had male cats and they are a totally different kettle of fish than females

I’ve had plenty of male cats, and never had one hump until now. Elmo’s 5 yrs and was neutered around 8 weeks. He lives inside, never pees on anything, but pretend nurses on a blanket. I had another male cat with heart issues that died this winter at 6 yrs. My other cat’s a spayed female, and Elmo ignores her. He started the humping a month ago, on my leg through a blanket. He was distressed when his brother died. I took him for a check-up; he’d never been aggressive before but this time was very aggressive and it took 4 to muzzle/sedate him to do his physical. The vet found nothing wrong. A family of strays moved into my front yard, where Elmo doesn’t go. He CAN see them and smell them. There’s an intact male and a female with 2 kittens. It’s strange she lets the male stay but he’s sweet and gentle with the babies. The male sprays, and mounts the female. I think Elmo’s seen and smelled this and that’s why he’s humping. Some have stated that it’s natural for cats to have mating urges, but unless they were neutered AFTER they developed hormonal characteristics, my understanding is that they don’t have urges. It’s not a vasectomy; all their parts are removed. They don’t ‘think’ of sex the way we do, and simply react to hormones with instincts. Like Casey I’d like Rebecca to continue her explanation of how kneading and pretend nursing can turn into humping. I think it’s the cat reacting to hormones in its environment. While Elmo has had a lot of changes, he didn’t start this until the strays showed up. He’s riveted by them. On an episode of “My Cat From Hell” the cat behaviorist found a cat was peeing inside along the wall next to the yard where other cats were marking. He had the owner take kitty out on leash to meet the other cats and scent mark himself, on his own property, and he stopped peeing inside. I hope some of the early posters will come back and give us updates. Perhaps some light can be shed by what they’ve found; this thread was started in 2006!

I had a male persian for 15 years, he was neutered at 4 months old and he was a totally indoor cat, but twice a year sping and fall, he tried everything he could to get outside. He would also to that weird thing like he was horny, he would jump up on my bed and start molesting my leg and hang his mouth open then he would make a strange throaty sound and his whole body would quiver. At first I didn;t know what the heck he was doing, after I figured it out, he was doing the cat equivalent to jacking off, for a lack of a better term, I would just toss him off the bed and let him take care of himself without the use of my leg. lol He also would actuall mate with my female cat when she was in heat. Of course I got her spayed. Right now my sister gave me her ten month old kitten because she moved and said she couldnt keep her anymore, well she is in heat and she does the weirdest things I have ever seen a cat do. She keeps like molesting me.

Hey guys
You can’t stop this behavior i’m sorry. My castrated 2year old cat try’s to do it with my dressing gown rope while it holds it in his month.

We went to the vet for a check-up and told him about our cat and he said it’s normal behavior. He said both female and male cats still produce sex hormones after being desexed as they are naturally produced in other parts of the body but in a much lesser volume. So they can still feel horny and try to mate.

I have two Maine Coon littermates, 7 years old. They were both fixed at 6 months. Clyde will try to mount Bonnie, and they get into awful fights. She has been getting beaten up pretty bad lately, with gashes under her chin. Thanks for this forum. I will get a blood test to see if Clyde has high hormone levels, and maybe I will have to revisit the neutering process.

Bonnie, I’m glad you’re going to get Clyde to the vet. This is way beyond my expertise, but his behavior seems quite unusual if it has just recently started. I’m assuming you’d have had him at the vet long before his reaching seven years. Good luck with both of them, and if you have time, please drop back and let us know what your vet determined.

Well, I’m glad I’m not the only one. I don’t punish Cooper for his behavior. I usually just ignore him unless he is blocking the TV. Cooper just loves to kneed my lap and hand….but only if I have one particular blanket on. He too gets an erection and leaves a tiny deposit. Coop has 2 older brothers so I thought he was trying to “mark” me. You know…let his big bros know that he has status. Since the day I got him he has been trying to be the alpha cat. With no luck.
All 3 cats are nuetered but Cooper is the only one who does that. He also tries to nurse on my earlobe. Goofy guy but ya gotta love him!
My Eqyptian Mau Ceasar pulls off my glasses when he wants attention.
Julian just sits on the bed and stares at me until I do what he wants me to.
Just like us they have different personalities and needs. I’m not going to punish a cat for being a cat.

I have a male cat who had been neutered at 6 months old and he is aggressive and chases my female whenever she is in heat. Of course, she is the victim in this case because he is twice her size and constantly runs after her and bites her.

Yes, I scold him because I teach my indoor cats manners. Yes, these are animals and yes, they have these “natural” desires but get real when you think that a little discipline actually hurts them (as long as you are not beating them). I already have them climbing the curtains and scratching the walls and carpets. This too…. a natural behavior but not acceptable in my home.

I thought that this was an important thing to comment on since I saw above where someone felt the need to put another in her place. Telling a cat that they are bad is not necessary but telling a cat that they are cute for doing it is kinda odd if you ask me.

That aside, I too am at my wits end with this behavior. I guess the answer that I will take from this forum is there is nothing that you can do and deal with it the best that you can. My only hope that my male does not start mating the furniture or worse…me.

My 2.5 year old cat started doing this and he was neutered as a kitten. On that note, I want to be sure to let everyone know that it is so important to spay and neuter your pets to prevent unwanted litters, limit and prevent most behavioral issues such as marking, howling, aggression, roaming, (running away or being run over by a car) etc. Cats can reproduce at a very young age so it is best to get it done as early as possible. I work at a no kill rescue in Phoenix, AZ and dedicate my time to advocating for responsible pet ownership and animal welfare. There are lots of low cost animal clinics that offer the procedure for $25-$35 in the states, and often times you can obtain a voucher for free altering from your county animal control program. If left in tact, cats have a much higher risk of developing cancer or other painful or fatal reproductive complications. There is a serious overpopulation issue that contributes to stray animal suffering and and we all need to do our part on behalf of domesticated pets. Here is a great resource with more information: http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/spayneuter/spay-neuter-top-ten.aspx

(140) Tracy says:

I just found this information via another website:

Humping behavior (mounting) is normal for sexually intact male cats. Even after neuter surgery, hormones take time to leave the body and mounting (grasping with forepaws, gripping the neck with teeth, and thrusting) can prompt the behavior to continue for a few weeks.

Neutered kitties sometimes continue this behavior. They may target other cats—it doesn’t seem to matter if the partner is neutered or spayed—and sometimes cats simply become “special friends” with a certain pillow or stuffed toy. Although the hormones are gone, these cats continue to masturbate and that’s well within the range of normal behaviors. Usually the activity upsets owners more than it does the other pets.

I moved in with my boyfriend 1.5 yrs ago. He has a 17 year old neutered indoor male cat. Just recently, the cat is jumping in the bed at night when my boyfriend and I are having sex. The cat starts meowing differently and tries to hump our legs or arms. It is kind of weird and a bit distracting while we are in the middle of getting it on. I feel sorry for the cat and am wondering why all of a sudden has this behavior started. It has been going on for 2 yrs…i mean my boyfriend and I. lol The cat just started this behavior a few weeks ago. I agree the cat should enjoy his last years…he is kind of old; but, I don’t want him on the bed doing this while we are trying to get it on. Well, I am just wondering if it was normal and why it just started at this late age. He has never acted like this before.

He looked as if he was trying to keep the pile still by biting it , but it just kept going around & around in a circle . I was so shocked ! When he noticed that I was watching him , he stopped and gave me such an angry look as if he was saying “What are you looking at ?” I didn’t scold him , I left him alone . I figured I wouldn’t want anyone bothering me while I was gettin’ “Some” so why should I bother him !

I’m glad to hear there are so many others out there and thanks for all your comments. Last summer, two of our three male cats died within six weeks of each other, leaving our twelve year old cat Winston alone, and after a month, we thought he seemed lonely, so we adopted 5 y.o. male Siamese, Max. Within a short time, Max started displaying this behaviour – he’d bite Winton’s neck, cry loudly, and hold him down. Winston just rolled over and took it, but there was no humping, just a slight shuddering, and we’d break them up if Winston cried. We thought it was a dominance thing.
Well, Winston died this past August, and sometime in September, Max decided to make me his concubine. He has a fishing rod toy that he drags around in his mouth, wailing, and does what we call his little “bee dance”, rocking back and forth on his back paws, straddling (or trying to) my leg or my arm. Good thing he’s declawed, because he’s clamped onto my arm a few times, and if I try to move him, he loses it! We’re thinking he needs another cat to show dominance to… or to try to hump. Really hoping it’s not urological or a sign of adverse health. But reading here, I don’t think so. He only does it to me, never my husband. It really increased when my husband was away for three weeks, keeping me up at night!
Not sure to get him a kitten, a female, or another male same age, but he seems to need a buddy… like someone else mentioned here, he also loves the fuzzy flannel sash from my bathrobe too, drags it around in his mouth, crying and bee dancing. And of course gets his little red Xmas tree light on, hehehe. I’m sure he’s okay, just a horny weirdo.
Cats. What are ya gonna do.

Hi to all the cat lovers out there. I love my 5 month old kitten to bits and pieces. To date his is fully vaccinated, desexed and in perfect health. The vet is happy with his diet and said he is a happy, healthy (and very busy!) kitten growing at the right rate. I am so happy about this. To me hi is perfect ! However, recently he has been biting … a lot. The Vet said this may get worse and to use a spray bottle whilst he is in the act. Now I simply point this in his direction when he attempts to bite and the darling soul just stops and squints at the bottle ! Tonight for the first time he kneaded my stomach for a good 8 minutes no stop – very fixated. And then he mounted the pillow next to me and started to hump it ! I have seen dogs do this and so I knew what he was doing and was amazed as I didn’t think he would get ‘the urge’ since being dexexed (as we say in Australia!)…then started shaking and stopped. This is nature ! This is how god made us – never scold your cat ! Just understand it’s natural !

SOOOOOOOO happy I found this forum. Such a relief to know this behavior is normal! My 8 year old (neutered) Ragdoll began frantically kneading my stomach and rubbing himself on my arm – I was worried because after doing it for a while he’d start shaking, and I thought he was hurting himself lol! Guess it was just him getting his rocks off. Never experienced anything sexual from him before but perhaps he’s hit sexual maturity? Ragdolls are slow to mature so it makes sense. Just wonder why so randomly he started doing this…

I am having the same problem with Oliver my 1 year old male cat. He was never neutered and I thought this was why he became a “humper”. I was shocked when I woke to find him on my back biting my shirt and doing a fast rocking motion, I knew right away what was going on. I wake up with my husband doing the same thing, minus the biting my shirt, lol, I’M JUST KIDDING EVERYONE, don’t freak out it’s a joke. Anyway I watch this show where a cat whisperer, i call him anyway, goes to houses to help people with cat problems, from peeing on stuff to just bad behavior. One thing I did find was a common thread in many cases was the presence of another cat outside. Most times the indoor cat can not only smell the other cat but see it though a window or door. Your cat may be afraid or anxious no matter which it is, the to fix it is remove the problem, the other cat. Make sure there is nothing inviting the other cat to your house, like a good place to use as a litter box, like a sand box near house or a large dirt area near house. If there is fill it with rocks. Make sure there is no food left out, just walk the area of your house where your windows and glass doors are that your cat can see out and investigate if there is a way to deter other cats from coming around. The other thing that helps is making your cat feel self assured. I’m not kidding, they need self esteem just like us. Lots of attention and play time helps a lot. If your cat won’t let you hold them with out wanting to hump, try getting toys to play with cat instead and eventually you will be back to cuddling. Hope this helps. And look up the show I’m talking about on your local tv stations, it’s called “My cat from hell”, it’s on the animal planet channel it’s a great show with great information and ideas. Good Luck!

Julie, “that guy” you watch on T.V. is Jackson Galaxy, and last year I reviewed his book, “Cat Daddy.”

I’d suggest if your Oliver is a year old and still not neutered, that you get that procedure done quickly. Otherwise, his humping activity will quickly be supplemented by spraying noxious urine on your walls and furniture, and looking for opportunities to escape so he can find real live female cats to hump, along with fighting off all the other tomcats.

Otherwise, in most conditions the advice you found on “The Cat From Hell” weekly show is sound and complete.

My problem deals with my spayed 5 year old female. She looks like a Russian Blue. All grey with golden eyes. All of a sudden she has grabbed the attention of a feral male, who looks just like her. She never likes other cats to hang around our house, but she is obviously submissive to this one. She sits by the front door in the evening sniffing him out from under the front door and crying to be able to go outside. I won’t let her out for fear of coyotes getting her, and the partner of this one has let her know to stay away. I’d hate to have her get into a cat fight.

Well my cat is only 4-4.5 months so he’s not humping things….yet anyway. I need to have him neutered but I’ve procrastinated because of my hectic work schedule. Anyway, I’m wondering if the humping isn’t something that will be starting soon because he does knead his paws a lot and gets very “into it”! So into it that if he is kneading a blanket & my leg is under the blanket, it becomes painful because of his claws. He also “sucks” on the blanket (or my bathroom rugs), or anything soft, and fluffy! The more fluffy the better for him! He just kneads and sucks many times a day. It’s gross because he leaves his wet “sucked on” spots on my blankets, pillows or whatever. So with him doing this at such a young age, I’m worried this might be a precursor to worse behavior later on….should I worry about this? Is this sucking on all things fluffy normal?

Hi everyone,

I too have a nuetered male cat who likes to masturbate and gets erections. He especially likes to do it on me, and I am the only female in the house and the one who has spent the most time with him and raised him since he was 7 weeks.

I am wondering why the “making muffins” can sometimes lead to humping though. As someone else pointed out, Rebecca’s very informative post left out how those two actions are linked. She said she would explain later how the kneading can turn into humping but she never did….

Rebecca if you see this please explain! I am so flattered by the kneading and kitten/mother like actions but would rather it not progress into mating behaviors (he ejaculates on me as well).

Thank you!
