Oh Give me a Home Where the Cats (Do or Don't) Roam

Friday December 15, 2006
Well, in Oak Bay, B.C. the council, in a split vote, decided that a proposed bylaw amendment for fining cat owners who allow their cats to roam, would be excessive, according to the Oak Bay News. The resident who proposed the bylaw was worried about health risks associated with cat excrement.

Opponents pointed out that the cats are performing a service by keeping the Oak Bay rat population at bay (pun not intended), and homeowners who are concerned about cat feces can use other means of discouraging their trespassing, such as animal repellants.

What's Your Opinion? Would you support a similar law? Cast your vote in the poll.

I voted for “I’m not sure” because I think the key point is not part of the poll. Are they spayed or neutered? If they are people should have the option to let their cats out, if not they should not be allowed to roam.

My concern is for the welfare of the cats. I think it is much better for them to be kept indoor-only. There are so many threats out there - traffic, other animals, exposure to diseases, etc. If a law will protect cats, I’m in favor of it.

I’m with Chris. They need to be spayed or neutered. I think the owners should be required to keep their pets vaccinations updated as well. Cat, dog or whatever else we may have, it’s our responsibility as pet owners to watch out for them.

Hello, I know this doesn’t apply to the law you are talking about, but if you want to know what happened to my cat a little over a year ago, please visit my website I dedicated to her. I hope that is allowed to post my website here. Thank you, Shauna http://sydneybean.googlepages.com/home

I live in Hampton Va. and we recently passed a law that allows cats to roam, but they must be licensed. My cats won,t
wear collars, but I don’t let them out of my yard. So they don’t bother anybody.

This is to Shauna, how sad for Sydney Bean and you. I agree, We must keep our cats in doors. Give them things to do in the house. Our Meescha was a stray and now a happy, loved, indoor cat, with her three dogs and a hamster for siblings. LOVE OUR CATS!!!

Shauna-

I just visited your website and share your grief and anger over what happened to your gorgeous Sydney.

The threat of something similar happening to my Tun Tun is why I never let him outside where I live now. If anything bad happened to Tun it would kill me.

I agree with the Oak Bay people, who oppose the law!! I too believe their cats help keep the rat population down,by allowing theircats to”roam.”

I have a neighbor that has 4 dogs, 2 cats and a bird. Her cat keeps entering my garden. I have bird feeders on my property and I also caught the bird in the cats mouth. Who knows a way to keep the cats away?
