Before You Get Your First Cat

Wednesday December 20, 2006
So you think you might want to get a cat, and don't know where to start. It's not a good idea to adopt a cat during the holidays, because the hectic activity associated with this time of year just adds stress to an already strange new experience for the cat. But do your homework first, and think about a new cat for the New Year.

You no doubt have dozens of questions running through your mind: "Should I get a male or a female, a kitten or an older cat?" "I'd really like a purebred (name your favorite breed), but maybe I should adopt a mixed breed instead." This tutorial helps answer those questions, as well as a few you haven't thought of.

This photo depicts our Billy on his adoption day. We adopted him from a rescue group that holds regular "adoption days" every weekend at a local pet supplies store.

HI FRANNY,

I AM A CAT LOVER TOO AND I REALLY LIKE YOUR ARTICLES IM GLAD YOU ARE ALSO AGAINST DECLAWING I DON’T LIKE PEOPLE WHO DO IT BECAUSE IT IS SO “EASY”.FOR FURNITURE CARPETS ECT …NOBODY REMOVES OUR “FINGERNAILS”. THOSE PEOPLE SHOULD GET A FISH TANK….RIGHT.

I HAVE A 18 YEAR OLD CAT, WHICH WE GOT AS A 6 WEEK OLD KITTEN WHO IS IN VERY GOOD SHAPE FOR HER AGE.

WE MOVED WITH HER 6 YEARS AGO FROM GERMANY TO CONNECTICUT

I want to share the harsh truth about declawing for those out there considering it. Part of the toe is actually removed not just the nail. Can you imagine the pain in having that done? Don’t do it, it also some times makes a cat cranky, in personality in adulthood. BEWARE!

Good point, Tracy.

We were thinking about declawing our cat, but it would hurt too much that we decided not to.

I just had my little girl fix. She didn’t come home with a pain patch, but when I worked at a vet clinic there were always a pain patch for the cats who were declawed. Think about it PAIN PATCH FOR DECLAWING NO PAIN PATCH WHEN FIX.
Thank you
