Major Pet Food Recalls

Saturday March 17, 2007
Menu Foods, a major Canadian manufacturer of Wegans and Walmart pet foods, has recalled a number of cat and dog foods sold at those chains, following the deaths of a number of cats and dogs after eating those foods.

According to The Ithaca Journal, a partial list of the specific recalled foods for cats are:
  • Wegmans Chicken Slices in Gravy 5.5 oz. (UPC 77890 54269)
  • Wegmans Pouch Chicken in Gravy 3 oz. (77890 82643)
  • Wegmans Pouch Turkey and Giblet 3 oz. (77890 82646)
  • Wegmans Pouch Mixed Grill 3 oz. (77890 82649)
  • Wegmans Pouch Tuna in Gravy 3 oz. (77890 82658)
  • Wegmans Pouch Beef in Gravy 3 oz. (77890 82664)
  • Wegmans Cat Food Variety Pack 132 oz. (77890 54272)
In addition, Menu Foods has now posted an extensive list of other recalled brands, including certain varieties of the popular Nutro Natural Choice pouches and Nutro Max Gourmet Classics pouches, manufactured or sold in the U.S. and/or the U.K.

Consumers may call Wegans at 1-866-463-6738 with questions.

In addition to this disturbing news, P&G Pet Care has announced the voluntary recall of certain canned and pouch cat foods under the Iams and Eukanuba brands, manufactured by contract by Menu Foods.

Although the specific cause of the sickness and death of animals eating these foods has not been conclusively determined, the symptoms of lethargy, vomiting, and loss of appetite suggest possible kidney failure.

(1) Monique says:

I thought that Science Diet wet food was also being recalled.

March 17, 2007 at 2:26 pm
(2) Kristin says:

The P&G voluntary link doesnt work, fyi. Try here.

And I haven’t heard about the science diet in the articles I have seen. Just the generic ones listed in the first link and the Iams and Eukanuba.

(3) Tracy says:

I too wonder about the Science Diet, 3oz. size cans of kitten food. My cat loves the liver kitten food. One 3 oz. can lasts her for days. After she eats what she wants I put the plate in a zip lock bag and then it all goes into the ref. for another time. She isn’t a big eater. Fine with me so she will stay fit. Hates people food.

March 17, 2007 at 8:01 pm
(4) Sandra says:

On the Hill’s website, it says they have recalled Science Diet Kitten Savory Cuts Ocean Fish 3 oz & 5.5 oz, Adult Feline Savory Cuts 5.5 oz cans of Beef, Chicken, Ocean Fish & Feline Senior Savory Cuts Chicken 5.5 oz.

(5) Sharon says:

I’m feeding IAMS foil pack Select Bites and I noticed her not eating as much this past week. I thought it was just time to switch the “wet” brand again, now we’re gonna see the Doc. None of the codes match the ones on the list.

March 17, 2007 at 8:51 pm
(6) Judy in Virginia says:

My cat is in the hospital tonight for additional testing. She had elevated creatinine levels which indicates kidney failure — I’ve been feeding her these Iams pouches for a couple of months because she seemed to enjoy it — looks like I’ve been killing her instead — the pouches I have are on the list. I still have my sales receipts for the stuff I bought a month and two weeks ago.

March 18, 2007 at 8:51 am
(7) Susan says:

Judy, I am so sorry to hear about your kitty. I hope she is going to be OK.
My Nutro pouches are on the list. My cat stopped eating it about 3 days ago, and has only been eating her dry food. Does anyone have any ideas on what kind of wet food is safe?

March 18, 2007 at 10:27 am
(8) cats says:

Kristin, thanks for the P&G link correction. The one that I used worked fine yesterday morning when I posted it.

March 18, 2007 at 11:47 am
(9) bev says:

My 18 yr. old indoor cat, in fine shape till yesterday. I give her Science Diet for indoor cats and she’s been o.k. Yesterday I gave her Pro Plan salmon and rice, which she ate voraciously.Last night she wouldn’t eat either one, same today and seems lathargic. I might be just jumping at shadows, but I’m very concerned.

March 18, 2007 at 1:48 pm
(10) Greg says:

We sadly had to put down our 10 month old cat last week due to kidney failure. We had fed her Nutro pouches for a few months. She got ill in Feb and we treated her for anemia, later blood tests showed kidney failure. So very sad, I want some form of compensation from Menu Foods.

March 18, 2007 at 3:57 pm
(11) Susan says:

Greg,
Nutro’s web site is saying there have been no deaths related to their product. http://www.nutroproducts.com/menufoods.asp

Also, on this web site: http://www.felinecrf.org/which_foods.htm#catfood_recall, it says to report your case to both the FDA and the food manufacturer or ask your vet to do so. It also states that the manufacturers should help with your vet bills. I hope you pursue this, even though nothing can really compensate you for your loss.

March 18, 2007 at 4:19 pm
(12) Ethel says:

I am sorry for what happened to your cat Greg. I believe you deserve some form of compensation even though it costs more than money to get through the pain of losing a pet. I’m glad I did not fall for those aggressive advertising in stores about Nutro. I bought the dry food and my cats didn’t even like it. I have always fed my cats Purina. And I hope this company will keep its high standards.

March 18, 2007 at 4:29 pm
(13) Teresa in KY says:

Had to put down our 12 year old cat Friday night due to kidney failure. Vet says very possible it was the Iams food. Vet says if animal has consummed the recalled food have them tested they can save them if caught early enough.

March 18, 2007 at 5:21 pm
(14) Su in TX says:

My 10 yr old cat was just hospitaized for renal failure. Sure eonugh, I dug out the cans with the product codes listed on the recall list. I will be quite upset if the food has caused her illness by itself. What about my other 9 cats? What’s happening in America if you can’t even safely feed your animals? Very creepy!

March 18, 2007 at 5:53 pm
(15) Monique says:

My deepest condolences to those who have lost their beloved friends due to this.

March 18, 2007 at 6:42 pm
(16) Mary says:

If I was in your shoes & had lost a dog or cat after eating these tainted foods I would seek compensation from the manufacturer. Some one should pay for your heartbreak & pain. Who can we trust? Took the companies long enough to put the complete list out for the public. I have 2 dogs & 3 cats & thank God they didn’t have any of these foods.
If this can happen to pets what’s to keep us safe? There have already been recalls on peanut butter, lettuce. etc. What’s happening to this country?

March 19, 2007 at 12:37 am
(17) michele says:

I was feeding my cat Iams select bites cat food and she started laying around alot and she wouldn’t eat much and she couldn’t go to the bathroom well so I took her to the vet and he said her kidneys were failing and it would be best to put her to sleep so she wouldn’t suffer anymore. I never thought it could be the cat food.

March 19, 2007 at 1:08 am
(18) CC says:

It is so sad to hear of people losing their pets because they were taking good care of them by feeding them. It’s just sad…period. I feel for you all who have suffered losses.
My cats eat Friskies made by Purina, I *think* it is by Purina. So far so good but I keep watching and reading the news hoping there won’t be more pet losses and seeing if there is a recall update.

March 19, 2007 at 12:59 pm
(19) Patty says:

Okay, my understanding is there is wheat flour used in these foods that the glutton effects the cats. So is this wheat also used in dry of the same brands?????

March 19, 2007 at 1:04 pm
(20) Dolores says:

It is always sad to hear about the loss of someone’s pet regardless of the reason. If you have the slighest concern please, please, please take your pet to your Veterinarian for blood work.

March 19, 2007 at 1:06 pm
(21) Sue says:

I saw the news story last week, and sent it to every pet owner I could think of. I’m so saddened by the unnecessary loss of any pet.
So far, I’ve only heard about wet food recalls. Has anyone heard of any problems with dry food, or are we safe with that so far? Just to be sure, I’m throwing out a bag of dry that my cats didn’t like as much as another bag of the same brand.

March 19, 2007 at 1:09 pm
(22) cats says:

To those of you who are worried about dry foods: The manufacturer has been explicit all along that dry foods are not a problem. I have also included that information in today’s blog update.

(23) Mscalico says:

I had just received a coupon in the mail for Iams cat food. Thank the lord I didn’t purchase it. My sincerest condolences to everyone who has lost a precious cat. I have had losses due to kidney failure and it’s awful.

March 19, 2007 at 4:50 pm
(24) Mike says:

We had a cat die last month. He was eating Iams Select Bites. He was already sick, so we don’t know if the food was a factor, but his condition deteriorated very rapidly his last few days. One of the remaining pouches is included in the recall. (The ones he ate were discarded, so we don’t know how many of those were included.) The wide variety of brands affected is revealing. It appears that there is no point in choosing one brand over another. They all are from the same stuff!

March 19, 2007 at 7:35 pm
(25) Greg says:

I posted earlier about my cat dying from eating these tainted foods. I reported this to the FDA office at 9.00 am this morning in Dallas, the gentleman said I was the 20th call he had so far. There are going to be a lot of very angry pet owners reporting this week.

March 19, 2007 at 7:41 pm
(26) Greg says:

Everyone with affected pets should report to the FDA. The FDA is asking those with sick or dead pets to call FDA state complaint coordinators. A list of contacts for such coordinators is available at http://www.fda.gov/opacom/backgrounders/complain.html .

March 19, 2007 at 10:02 pm
(27) Monique says:

As Mike stated there was really no point in choosing one food over the other because they all stemmed from the same contaminated source. That is terrifying.

What also concerns me is that this affair will be tried to be ignored. I fear that many people will think “oh it was just some animals that died”. I pray this does not happen.

Nice work Greg.

March 19, 2007 at 11:06 pm
(28) Greg says:

Pet Connection is gathering statistics everyone affected should fill this out.
Thank you all for the condolences and my sympathy to all other grieving pet owners. Here is the link

(29) Christine says:

I had my cat treated about two weeks ago because he was vomiting excessively, he would not eat and as he is a young cat - his lack of energy was disturbing. My vet gave him a high-protien/high calorie food substitute and that seems to have helped. What disturbs me more is that I had just switched from the cat chow indoor formula to just the original cat chow and neither are on the list….? None of my other three cats were affected.

March 20, 2007 at 8:23 am
(30) Marcie says:

(32) Biddy says:

As all pet lovers I am appalled that one cannot trust Pet Food suppliers, we have bought Purina for many years, will continue to purchase the dry food: as one person wrote, let us not allow this to be brushed under the carpet, our Lucky is not at all well, but we are praying. For those whom have lost their Dear pets, cherish the memories, they will live on in our hearts,God Bless Biddy

I fed my two 2 year olds pouch food from the Nutro recall yesterday (monday 3/19). Does anyone know how long it takes symptoms to appear?

March 20, 2007 at 5:32 pm
(36) Monique says:

Mark-

The cases I have heard about seem to present symptoms with varying time lines. Bottom line is-if your baby has eaten any of this contaminated food get him/her into the vet for bloodwork.

(37) Bud says:

The Rainbow Bridge
There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth. It is called Rainbow Bridge be cause of its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys, with lush green grass. When a beloved pet dies, the goes to this place. There ia always food and water and waem spring weather. The old and frail animals are young agin. Those who are maimed are made whole agin. The play all day with each other.
there is only one thing missing. they are not with their special person who loved them on Earth. So,each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops plating and looksup! The nose twitches! The ears are up! The eyes are staring! And this one suddenly runs from the group. You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her in your arms and embrace.YourFace is kissed again and again. You look once more intothe eyes of your trusting pet.
then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to separated.

We just had to have our 16 yr. old cat put to sleep. She had all the symptoms, took her to vet, kidney failure was determined after blood tests. We were feeding her Iams, Wegmans, and Friskies canned food, when she would eat. She drank plenty of water, avoided the food, and slept. She is greatly missed.

My cat has been eating purina pro plan senoir for 2 months. I have questioned it everytime I opened the can it smells funny almost like a plastic type smell. She seemed to be lethargic after eating it. I am no longer feeding it to her. Wouldn’t be surprised to see it on the list in the future.

I had my cat 18+ years who on Jan 25 07 was diagnosed with kidney failure on 23 Feb 07 I had to make the heart wrenching decision of putting her to sleep. I gave her a variety of foods which are on the list and others that are not yet posted. I am afraid to get another pet. I put my faith in the product makers to supply food for my cat and find out somehow the foods have been tainted. This is very saddening to myself and anyone who may or might have experienced a loss.

There is so many kinds of cat/dog food under different labels I’m getting confused on what’s safe and what’s not.
I feed my cats 9 Lives/Fancy Feast/Friskies can food, along with Purina dry food. My dog is feed Purinia’s Kibbles and Bits. Has anyone heard if any of these are recalled?
I don’t think so but my pets are part of the family and I’m sure most are.
I’m wondering what are products will be found to be unsafe (pets or people)

There are top quality dog & cat foods that can be purchased at Pet Shops, not grocery stores. The organic ones are the best, as most of them use higher standards of food in them. There are also some that are grain free. Not buying grocery store pet food is probably the healthiest thing you can do for your animal. My sympathy to those who have lost their best friend.

Deanna
We also love our animals very much, and what I am trying to say, is I wouldn’t take my chances feeding mass produced grocery store pet food and then wait to see if it’s going to be on the list or not. The organic higher quality foods are made by their own companies, with no dangerous chemicals. There’s Wysong, Orijen, Precise, GO etc.

I just put down an 10 year old cat due to a type of cancer in her mammory glands, yes she did eat the recalled food, BUT how do you prove that’s what she died from. I also have still a 17 year old cat that was diagnosed with kidney failure, I now have to inject her everday with sodium chloride and also give her pepcid ac and a appetite stimulant, I will never get used to giving her this IV every day of mine and her life (I’ve always had a fear of needles), also now when I go away she will need to be boarded so as to someone else has to give her the meds. All I want to know is will I be wasting my time going after these companies for some kind of compensation and possibly paying all my vet bill past, present and future.

When I was kid, which seems like a long time ago now, we used to feed our pets right from the table. They NEVER got sick. My cat was diagnosed with Diabetes last Sept. Animals don’t get this disease, they don’t get cancer, or renal failure. Regardless what anyone says, his illness is from the food. Specifically, Science Diet.
He now eats Innova - all natural food and is doing well, even though he isn’t regulated on his insulin yet. Once I perfect making his food, he will be eating home made cat food. My 2 dogs have been eating homemade food for years and my 14 yr old Maltese acts and looks like a dog 1/2 her age.
Read the labels on all pets foods and treats. Go into the Tail Blazers web site for all the toxic substances that they even out in the dog cookies, like BHA and BHT - they cause cancer in dogs.
Eveyone, read ALL labels before you allow your beloved pet to eat anything.
By-products…this is the garbage that is put in pet foods that is not FIT for HUMAN CONSUMPTION

I have read most of these these reviews. I am sad to here that there is this much of a problem with something as simple as catfood. I have 2 cats that have been on Purina cat Chow for 14 years and they still are happy. Del Monte says their cat food 9lives is safe I found the same recall code (BC7A19 JAN 19 10) on their SuperSupper cat food as it appears on their recalled dog food. FREE TRADE be damned we ship out America’s jobs and get back tainted food, non-native bugs, plants and strange viruses.

I took my cat (Kimo) and my 2 dogs in for blood testing 3 weeks ago after feeding Pedigree wet and dry to the dogs and Friskies wet to my cat. I noticed symptoms and was concerned although foods are not on recall. Dogs came back good, my cat came back with kidney failure. Vet said not sure if it’s the food. I’m dismayed to watch Kimo get sicker each day so quickly, and nothing I can do about it until I take him in for the last time. I have been feeding the dogs homemade food now from Vet approved recipes but Kimo won’t eat anything I’ve tried so far. I’ve been reading other blogs and people are talking about their young health pets dying after eating the wet Pedigree. I don’t care if its on or not on recall, I’m not going to feed them any of it.

We have three rescused pitbulls and we feed them a few mixed brands of dry food. We feed Pedigree mixed with Old Yeller brand dog food from Kroger. I hear Pedigree is good so im wondering about the Old Yeller brand. Has anyone heard of this? For the last few weeks, Sprocket (Our white bully) has shown little interest in his food. It sees he only eats what he has to. Everyone else was fine. Then just three days ago out Staffy pup started vommiting and has shown NO interest in his food. He’ll drink, but wont eat and has no energy. I am certainly worried. Any suggestions?

I just wanted to I am so sorry for all the people who have lost there pets due to this large scale food contamination. Years ago we found that as a kitten, my now cat had food allergies and couldnt eat many of the food mentioned in the recall. I never thought this would turn out to be a blessing in disguise. No 5 years old, we have been feeding him Eagle Pack Holistic, Friskies kitten food, and Eagle Pack holistic dry food. These have been the only thing he could tolerate and luckly none of those foods have been involved in the recall. We are, as always watching closely the see if the recalls change.

your best bet is to feed only dry food - my pets are on nutro max dry food and friskies can food for an occasional treat - i have two 18 year old cats both already in kindney failure due to old age and they have been fine with the food they are eating. If the food was tainted they would be dead already. Purina had only one food that was affected and that was an alpo wet dog food. Purina and friskes can food is safe and as far as i have seen all dry foods.

sorry to post again - kaz i would contact my vet and also go to that pet food companies website and double check. and cindy how old is your cat? I have had a lot of cats and it seems kidney failure is like at the top of the list for cause of death of older cats. Don’t just give up on him tho you can do subcutaneous fluids to help his quality of life and some other things. I just lost my dearest cat friend of 19 years to kidney failure so it is sad but it wasnt from the food recall thing. I accept that she was very old and had had a very good life. both her daughters have kidney failure too and are also old.

The current pet food situation is frightening. I had to find pet food I could trust for my cat. I found out the big name “premium” foods like Iams and Eukanuba were no longer trustworthy, when the big corporations like Proctor and Gamble and Colgate-Palmolive bought out these premium brands and changed the formulas. I would NOT TRUST any of the big commercial pet foods anymore, including Purina. Once you learn about what SHOULD and SHOULD NOT be in your pets food, you wouldn’t feed them that stuff with corn and other ingredients they can’t even digest. I found a food I really trust, formulated by a holsitic veterinarian (who ironically worked for Iams and Eukanuba to formulate the ORIGINAL formula.) If you want to watch a very interesting video about pet food and learn what to look for in a pet food, go to my url. In any case, feed your pet holistic food you have read ingredients throughly on (and know what you are looking for!) or make it yourself if you can be sure you are adding all the nutrients your pet needs, but stay AWAY from supermarket pet food!

Hello Girls and Guys Ladies and Gentlemen,

Has anyone had a problem with their kitty. My family’s cat has a strange personality change recently. aggressive and hissing and growling and scratching.
“Sararfina” has NOT behaved like a loved family pet until 2 days ago. There are no other pets in my family. I have given this a lot of thought. My daughter lives in Kansas (Dorothy your are in Kansas anymore )Has anyone had this problem with a cat in extreme pain. My daughter bought dry kibbles made by meow mix who is a division of Del Monte. We are thinking that the Hyvee brand private label is trying to move old stock. Is there any place or lab that this sample of meow mix can be sent it to for evaluation. I would appreciate any response or suggestions,

many regards,

dbrant

Stop feeding your cats cheap food! If you want them to live longer, and save money at the vets, spend more on their food. Try Eagle Pack!

This is alarming. For us pet owners to make sure that our pets are eating safe
food, we might as well make them ourselves. Or better yet, make sure you buy the ones that are recommended by your pet’s veterinarian.
