Pet Food Recall Creates Anger, Fear, and Distrust in the Pet Food Industry

There is no question that Menu Food's March 16th announcement of a massive pet food recall is a major news story. Since that announcement, newspapers, television, and radio have been abuzz as further information unfolds and more reports of sick or dead cats and dogs are announced. Just to cite a few: Right here on this site, fear, anger, and confusion still exists, despite my and other news media's attempts to provide answers. A number of questions and concerns have still been posted in the earlier blogs' comments sections long after I created a Pet Food Recall FAQ, which answers all these questions.

Perhaps one of the saddest, but most distasteful offshoots of this tragic story, in my opinion, are the (entirely understandable) efforts by certain cat food companies to assure the public that their foods are safe. However, in the current climate, this information is exactly what consumers are asking for. So, for the record, these are the companies whose products have NOT been included in the pet food recall as of today's date:
Note: This is NOT an all-inclusive list.
  • Natural Life Pet Products
This company went to the expense of hiring an outside firm to email a press release. You can judge their ingredients list, but at first glance, wheat and corn products (both known allergens and "cheap protein" appear to be heavily weighted.
  • Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul
  • Canidae/Felidae
  • Castor & Pollux
  • Natural Balance
  • Solid Gold
  • Triumph/Evolve
  • Merrick
  • Kal Kan (Pedigree, Cesar, and Whiskas)
As mentioned numerous times, both on this site and elsewhere in the news, the current recall list is available on the Menu Foods Web site.

  1. Alasandra says:

My cat Whiskers died March 9th, 2007 from kidney failure after eating Special Kitty Pouch Cat Food.

If they had only notified consumers Feb. 20th when they first knew there was a problem he would STILL BE ALIVE. I will never forgive them for delaying the recall and killing my cat.

  2. Rhonwyn says:

Alasandra, I am so sorry about your kitty. I found a pouch of the recalled cat food in my cupboard which I was saving for a treat for my cats. Some treat!

  3. Ethel says:

I don’t see Purina on the list. I feed my cat Fancy Feast. Is there any reason why this popular brand was left off?

  4. Marcy says:

When I first heard about the recall, I didn’t bother to check and see if my brand was on there, b/c I was told that Menu foods was marketed as store brands. Well, I decided to look at the list this morning, and to my dismay Nutro Max is on the list. Thank goodness it’s the pouches and not the cans, but I thought Nutro was a premium cat food. Does that mean the label is a lie when it says “chicken.” Should it say “chicken by-products” instead?

  5. beverly says:

The whole thing is just outrageous! I spend 2-3 times more on Nutro/Natural & Iams to avoid tainted, unethical dog/cat food and this company sells us food that kills. Even worse, I don’t think they care, they act like the whole think is an inconvience. They knew about this in mid-February and didn’t bother with it. I will never buy anything made by this company again. Right now I have 3 cats and 2 dogs and they are cooked people food or canned chicken & tuna until I come up w/a GOOD Pet Food Company. I am very sorry for the loss of people’s beloved pets.

  6. Cindy says:

Iams canned ENTREE is still safe to eat. It is made in a different plant (4583) with different ingredients (no wheat gluten).

By the list of ingredients it also seems to be a better product than ’slices in gravy’ as it has no meat by-products. It was for that reason that we avoided it and always made sure we were buying Entree.

However it just stuns me that the cause of the contamination is wheat gluten which never seemed like a red flag ingredient to me.

I have struggled with finding acceptable cat food for years. I often find more expensive veterinary type food that has meat by-products. The natural and holistic stuff almost always has fruit in it, which I think is a very bad idea. Cats just aren’t programmed to eat fruit and some fruits and vegetables are quite toxic to them. I even find some foods flavoured with onion powder!

I’m not that thrilled with Iams but it seems the lesser of many evils, for us anyway. I acknowledge that we have been extremely lucky with recent events. It could easily have happened to us.

What usually happens after a huge recall is an improvement in the safety of the supply. Let’s hope they pinpoint the cause soon.

  7. jen says:

Nutro, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet; these are all known as “premium junk food”. think about it; this company has been testing the recalled food on lab cats and dogs since the beginning (who are now dying), and not only supplies to these higher priced pet food companies, but also to the cheaper store brands. do you really think they have your pets best interests in mind? do your own online research to see whats really in pet foods, not just the foods affected by this recall, but their dry foods too. the real answers would horrify you. “by-products” alone can mean so many things, try a search and discover what i mean. my condolences to anyone who has lost a pet. my 19 and a half year old cat had chronic renal failure for at least two years, mostly the effects of old age, but also because of long term damage to the wrong foods. ive seen so many cats with kidney failure, and i know the pain of watching them go through that. use this recall as a wake up call for those of you who want the best for your four legged family members, educate yourself so you can make their lives even better.

  8. Maryann Lang says:

You have Natural Balance on the list with the comment that wheat and corn are “heavily weighted” — I have checked out Natural Balance thoroughtly and unless they are lying in the ingredients list, they DO NOT have wheat or corn in their wet cat food. They have brown rice flour in some of the varieties (Venison and Peas and Chicken and Liver Pate are grain-free). I am very confused about your comment and now I am concerned because I thought I was feeding my cat a cat food that DID NOT contain wheat or corn.

  9. Kim says:

Note on Maryanns Comment- they mention Natural LIFE above, not Natural Balance.

  10. cats says:

Maryann Lang: As the next poster after you said, please read the list again. It was Natural LIFE, not Natural Balance that was listed with corn, etc.

I happen to feed Natural Balance to my own cats. :)

  11. cats says:

    Ethel said:

I don’t see Purina on the list. I feed my cat Fancy Feast. Is there any reason why this popular brand was left off?

Ethel, neither Purina nor Fancy Feast were listed in the manufacturer’s recall list. It is impossible for me to list every single cat food product that is not on the list. Even if I could, the list would be so long that most readers would simply ignore it.

  12. Gracy Luna says:

My cat Caesar was diagnosed with a pancreas problem 3 years ago and, thank goodness, my vet told me to put him on Natural Balance cat food, both dry and wet. He is doing wonderful and has not been sick since! I am a great believer in NATURAL BALANCE!!!

  13. Cindy says:

We don’t need someone shouting at us at this time, lecturing us that, in their opinion, we have been feeding junk to our precious friends. I’m sure there is a huge desire to attribute blame and try to understand why we didn’t see this coming.

The problem with this particular supplier of this particular ingredient is just luck of the draw. (Unless we find there was a deliberate act of sabotage, of course.) All cat foods contain ingredients; they are a manufactured product. Along the supply chain, contamination can occur at anytime, anywhere to anyone. The reason for this contamination probably has nothing to do with the overall nutritional qualities of the food.

Notice that Whiskas is on this list of non-recall foods. I don’t think you can find a veterinarian on the continent who would recommend this food, which is full of meat by-products. It’s just that they haven’t had a devastating recall this month. Royal Canin was killing pets with too much Vitamin D recently. Purina Beneful could be toxic too, but they can’t figure out why. Diamond dog and cat food was recalled due to aflatoxin recently as well.

There needs to be more vigilance and testing of the entire pet food supply. There is obviously a problem with the entire industry.

  14. LoveRiot says:

I see that Fancy Feast/Purina is on the “OK” list, but frankly, I’m curious as to why–aren’t they using the same suppliers?

  15. TimeKitty says:

I feed my cats Good Life and only dry and wet once in awhile. They have fresh water daily as well. When I heard about the recall I called my husband to check the list he did 2 due to one of our furrybabys is 11. So far so good.

  16. Monique says:

There is a Yahoo group called Menu Foods Class Action that has formed to help people who have lost their beloved due to this tragedy.

  17. Sharon says:

My heart goes out to everyone who has had a pet become ill or pass due to this recent problem.
Obviously all of us pet owners will have be vigilant in checking labels and ensuring our pets receive nutritious foods. My dog lost all of hair when I fed him Purina beneful. Now that he and my kitties are eating only foods prepared in my kitchen they have been active, healthy with glossy coats.

  18. Monique says:

ps-the Yahoo group Menu Foods Class Action also discusses other matters besides loss of a family member related to this topic (eg menu alternatives). I got to stop these run on sentences!

  19. susan says:

this is awful!! my heart goes out to those of you who have lost your pets. and those of you who are dealing withsick pets and wondering. i have 2 cats and 2 dogs. i to have been feeding them with food from the list. so far they are doing fine. needless to say they aren’t eating those foods anymore(authority & nutro natural. initialy i went out and bought purina, thinking they’ve been around for awhile and have’nt killed any animals to my knowledge. but after spending most of the day online i’ve learned alot and i don’t trust any commercial foods. so now i’m feeding them homemade stuff. whatever fresh meat and brown rice ,egg and vitimins. today they had salmon. they loved it . back in the day we used to feed them table scraps. but then were told that wasn’t good for the them.
but i don’t remember any of them dying from it. any way this has been a real eye opener and i’ve learned a lot and will continue to learn what is and isn’t good for them.

  20. Dawn says:

I’m so sad to hear about sick and dying pets as it relates to food that is sold to us under false pretenses. I actually mostly feed my cat dry- InnovaEvo and occassionally give her the Nutro Natural Choice in the pouches as a treat. I am so angry that I feel I may have risked her life and health with this decision. I hope there is justice soon!

  21. Susan2 says:

Franny, I just want to thank you for the service you are providing. Your site has consistently had the most comprehensive and reliable information during this entire tragedy.

Good news, my kitty, who had gotten ill from eating the food, just got her blood test results and they are now “purrfect”, according to the vet! I feel like I can breathe again!

  22. Sarah says:

I am very sorry to everyone who has lost pets to this tragedy. However, I must say that I believe that the food disaster does not represent nutritional flaws in any company. After all. the issue of contamination in food is wide spread and occasionally crops up in the human market as well. Better regulation for all pet food companies would be a VERY appropriate response. The only condemnation I have for these companies specifically is that they did not alert the public sooner.
Please be aware that kidney issues have always been a problem in older cats and they need to be monitored by your vet. There was an article in the paper today in which a lady whose cat has chronic renal failure attributed it to the pet food. Food toxicity problems can trigger acute problems but chronic issues. For the benefit of your pets please take this time to consult with your vets about nutritional choices and regular check ups, especially if they are geriatric.

  23. Mary says:

I wrote to four pet food manufacturers, including Purina and Mars, asking if specific products were manufactured by Menu Foods. The only one who had the courtesy to answer was Pet Promise. None of their products have ever been manufactured by Menu Foods.

  24. Laura says:

So sorry for anyone’s loss…I would be devasted my girls.

I’m really curious to hear what you all are feeding your babies now. It took me the longest time to find a cat food that wouldn’t give Nina diarrhea and that Cece would eat. It was Nutro Natural Choice in pouches. And, I’m ashamed to admit that I thought I was giving them premium stuff. Today, I found a local pet store that sells some of the wet food from Franny’s top 10. Wish me luck!

  25. Laura says:

Oops, that should have read…”devasted without my girls.”

  26. Myra says:

Suggest feeding baby food until this horror can be sorted out.

  27. patty says:

My sweet Callie is very ill and right now under a chair. She is usually very playful but has been just laying down since she became ill from eating Sophisticat. Usually I feed her Fancy Feast but this was on the same aisle and I thought I’d try something a little different!! It was just a week or so ago. Why didn’t they recall this food sooner? I am heartsick to see my sweet girl this way. She hasn’t eaten in days. She has been on IV therapy but they need an antidote for this terrible poison. I read that there are crystals that form in the tissues. How can she recover? If anyone wants to compare treatments and notes, please leave a comment.

  28. Pat says:

Don’t know if anyone can help here but I’m a US citizen resident in Moscow. I buy Iams in pouches and Natural Choice in cans locally for my two cats. I buy this because I believe the brand and expect quality. Now I’m freaked. Though these are US brands, the product marketed in Europe is produced in Germany and the Netherlands. Does anyone know if any of the tainted food could have gotten into European distribution channels?

  29. Laura says:

I see people using Fancy Feast, which is what I also use for Timmy and Bobby, my two cats. I just wanted to say that I went on the Fancy Feast webwiste and they indicated that their cat food is not part of the recalled food.

    Thank you.

  30. Susan says:

My cat needs the gravy canned food to take her medicine (without either one of us needing a doctor). I’ve begun using beef & chicken gravy made for humans over her dry food. She absolutely loves it. Just a side note, there has been a recall of dry pet food in S Africa because of ethylene glycol contamination. No connection to any menu foods I can find, but the symptoms are the same.

  31. Margie says:

I am outraged! My cats were throwing up months ago and I immediately called Nutro Max in Canada and they assured me there was no problem with their food. I feed Moses and Matilda 3 oz. cans of Chicken Supreme and leave out dry food. They even sent me coupons for more of their product. What can I feed them now? I thought I was being a good mommy.

  32. Geo says:

My 8 1/2 yr old female cat died Jan 28th. Is there a web-site where we can add this information to a list so that the true scope of this problem can come to light. Please respond to “gdmmail@yahoo.com” Thank you.

  33. Susie says:

My little princess has problems with urinary tract infections. They get so bad that she urinates blood. I have her on a “prescription” diet, but I read the ingrediants and it sure has a lot of by products. She is a very picky eater and will not touch anything that is “people food” except milk. The vet said this prescription food shoud create the right balance to cure the infections, but I don’t know who to believe any more. Anyone else deal with this problem and have any good ideas. The thought of losing my baby because I didn’t pay enough attention to her food would just kill me.

  34. Debbie says:

This is a partial copy of the email I sent to Hills. I sent one similar to Menu and suggest everyone do the same.

As a responsible pet owner I have always been proud of the fact that I go out of my way to purchase what I think is a premium cat food and have sworn by Science Diet for years, despite being on a limited budget.
I feel Hills and Menu Foods should step up to the plate and allow FREE TESTING for all of pets involved in this mess.
I am extremely worried because I fed my little cat the involved food for an entire year. Being a tiny cat, she probably is not strong enough to ward off negative effects.
Unfortunately I am not in a position to pay $200.00 to get my little Precious tested.
Again, It should be on your shoulders to ease the minds of all of the worried pet owners.
If not for Our older cat, Pooky, I would swear off Science Diet and switch to a non Monopoly Menu Brand. She is too old to have a major change in her diet now.
I hope and pray nothing happens to little Precious as it would probably kill Pooky. Little Miss Pooky lost her life long companion in 04/06 and I don’t think she could handle the stress of losing another companion.
Someone needs to step up to the plate and take responsibility for this mess that has been caused by what is an apparent Monopoly trying to save a buck.

  35. Spanky's Mom says:

just a quick note about this tragic situation. My darling Spanky was fed Fancy Feast up until her last couple of weeks of life, at which point we were feeding her baby food because she wouldn’t eat. Spanky had to be put to sleep on Mar. 1 due to renal failure. Just four weeks earlier, she had been running, jumping, playing and being her normal loving self. She had a checkup in November with blood work that showed her kidneys were normal. I had to put my only child to sleep to spare here the pain and indignity of her having lost her bladder control. (She was prissy!)

Please take every precaution with your babies and make sure you are very comfortable with what you feed them. We normally fed Spanky raw, organic buffalo along with dry food, but thought canned would be a treat. What did I do!!!!!

  36. Francene says:

I will not feed my animals anything that I would not eat. Raw is best, cooked is okay. When you feed them you KNOW what is in the food. Corn and wheat have no place whatsoever in cat or dog food. NONE…when will we feed them properly?? Are people too lazy?? Do YOUR OWN RESEARCH..DON’T BELIEVE A VET ABOUT NUTRITION UNLESS HE OR SHE IS HOLISTIC/HOMEOPATHIC. Iams, Eukanuba and many more are the SAME garbage..just a different label slapped on.

  37. Elsie says:

    Please don’t be so self-righteous.

There are grieving pet owners here. Some of us can’t even afford the vet bills to help save our precious ones. Some cannot afford organic food, and some can’t afford the time to make homemade pet food either.

A lot of vets do not recommend raw food either. Last month Wild Kitty frozen raw cat food was recalled. That was due to salmonella contamination.

We all make our own choices. Don’t shout at us because our choices don’t fit your ideals.

  38. karen says:

i have known plenty of animals who have lived for almost 20 years and were fed bagged food. genetics play a huge part in what predisposes an animal to disease or cancer and no amount of home cooking or raw food will change that. i have 2 dogs with medical problems, one with lupas and the other has adeson’s disease and both are under the age of 5 years. last year i spent over $2500 treating my 4 dogs and 2 cats. like most pet owners, i try to make the best choice when it comes to bagged food. i hope people don’t feel unecessarily guilty because they can’t afford the $50 bag of whatever.god has a plan for all animals. some may not live as long as we would like and some may suffer from life threatening illnesses. but as long as you know you are caring for them the best you can, they will know it too.

  39. Marianne says:

Local news reports here in western Pennsylvania last night stated that the recalled pet food products were tainted with rat poison.
From the looks of all the lists of safe pet foods to feed our pets, the fish based products are NOT listed in any of the recalled products.

  40. Kristina says:

Purina was added to the list please update and verify at www.menufoods.com

  41. Kathryn says:

Kristina is WRONG about Purina wet cat food being on the recall list—-what a jerk to put out false information to scare people.

  42. cats says:

    Kristina and Kathryn:

The only Purina food on the list is Mighty Dog pouch-packaged foods. See the FAQ on their site.

I’d also like to say that we’re all upset by these events and name-calling and anger among ourselves only creates more stress for all of us.

  43. christine brown says:

If you all haven’t already been there and know of the boycott on Iams go to Iamscruelty.com.

  44. Christine brown says:

The pet food industry and most of the vets who sell the “special food”
(yeah, right) would have us believe that table scraps are BAD for our animals, but I ask, what did pets eat before there were commicial pet food companies? My fathe is 82, he had a dog when he was a boy that lived to be 20 years old. That dogs name was Ole Frank. Ole Frank never ate anything but the rabbits he caught and the scraps that he was fed. and were talking about the talble scraps of a poor applalacian family with 4 children to feed partially during depression years. The family ate beans, cornbread, gravy, bisquit, rice oatmeal. The family killed one hog a year and put up the meat.

  45. kalie says:

i think this whole thing is horrible! i have 3 cats and 2 dogs i love to death. theyre all spoiled and get wet food every day or so. when i first heard of the pet food recall, i was terrified. the first thing i did was throw all food in the trash. this ‘mistake’ of theirs is outrageous and ridiculous. my animals lives are in the balance and they act as if it is just an oversite in production. ive been feeding my animals eukanuba for 4 years now! it is so difficult to find a good pet food for your animals that isnt too pricey, wholesome and appetizing to them. i only wish the makers of these products can feel the pain of the people who lost their beloved pets. i know i would be lost inside myself if i had lost any of my family to this shameful omission.

  46. Jace says:

Our cat ” Izzie ” was fed the affected food - Special kitty select duck w/wild rice bought at Wal-Mart with the date Jan. 13. 09. She had major kidney failure and was put down on March 17th.. am. Heard about the recall after getting home from putting cat down.

  47. Kera says:

My parents have always used Purina Alpo and Fancy Feast - they’ve never had any problems with it. Their dog will be a healthy 10 years old and their cat hits the big 13 this year.

I feed both my cats Fancy Feast Elegant Medley and Purina Nauturals. My two dogs get Purina Alpo and we’ve had no problems yet. But I can say that Kibbles’n bits and some crappy food the vet gave me made them vomit frequently. I changed vets, changed to Alpo and haven’t had a problem since.

I am deeply sorry for all of you that have lost you precious babies. I don’t know what my husband and I would do without our furchildren, they are our world. My heart is with you.

Francene- There’s no need to be so frigid and cruel. I am a vegetarian, do you suggest I try to feed my animals what I eat? I doubt they will.

  48. Kera says:

Just wanted to add I agree with Christine. We feed our dogs our table scraps, my parents do the same with theirs. Their last Lab lived to be 18 1/2 (the average life expectancy for a Lab is 10-13). So I see nothing wrong with table scraps. Our dogs enjoy my husbands homemade teryaki Chicken and rice!

  49. Marcy says:

I am truly sorry for everyone that has lost a loved one due to Menu Foods oversite!!! There is a website that is tracking this data. I urge those of you that have lost a pet to this “tainted food recall” PLEASE input the data and contact the FDA.. Update 3/27: Nearly 2,000 pets have been reported as deceased to our PetConnection database.
This website carries a lot of information as well.

    www.petconnection.com

  50. Ryan says:

All these sad stories…I really feel sorry for everyones loss. So did we ever get an explanation of why yet? And geez, this is just ENTIRELY unacceptable. Where’s the FDA…what if this sorta thing happens in the normal human food supply?

  51. Angie says:

just because your pet food is not on the list is no guarantee it’s safe..do your research online and understand the labels. chances are those not listed just got lucky..unfortunately, this will not stop unless we fight the GREEDY pet food industry. i can’t believe how heartless people can be..that’s why i like animals so much more.
here’s the most horrible video i’ve ever seen..if this doesn’t rip your heart out and cause you to fight for our pets then nothing will..if we don’t do something, this can and will be our pet. please don’t let this issue die..
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGt7HkzNC68

  52. nan says:

paul newmans has both dry cat and dog chow..it is very good not soo expensive
the animals seem to like it.
not many of the stores have it on the shelves it but my grocery can order as well as any store you see that carries paul newman products. if more people request this brand then the stores might stock in on a regular basis.

  53. Felicia says:

I heard on CNN today, March 30, that the issue is contaminated wheat gluten, not rat poison. Fancy Feast cat good, with sauce varieties, contain wheat gluten (read the label). Should I stop feeding them Fancy Feast with sauce varieties which contain wheat gluten? They have no signs of illness. Is all cat food, dry or wheat, containing wheat gluten now off limits?

  54. Leo's pet human says:

Fancy Feast is a Purina brand. Although they do use glutens in their foods, they are unrelated to Menu Foods and obtain their ingredients (including glutens) from different suppliers.
Glutens are widely used in human prepared foods also, particularly those oriented toward vegetarians.

  55. Darlene says:

The most recent news release (today): “Nestlé Purina PetCare Company today announced it is voluntarily recalling all sizes and varieties of its ALPO® Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes. The Company is taking this voluntary action after learning today that wheat gluten containing melamine, a substance not approved for use in food, was provided to Purina by the same company that also supplied Menu Foods. The contamination occurred in a limited production quantity at only one of Purina’s 17 pet food manufacturing facilities.” What will be next? I am feeding Pro Plan dry food, but it does have wheat gluten! My cats have been eating from this particular package for about 2-3 weeks now and seem fine, but will this be next? What can I feed that and know they’re safe? We kept hearing that NO dry food was involved, now they’re recalling dry food. Any advice?

  56. Darlene says:

P.S. Does anyone know which dry food was involved? Another release today said that a dry food maker voluntarily recalled their food but they didn’t name the company? The news said thaqt the recall was expanded to include the first dry pet food but didn’t name which one. Has anyone heard more on this?

  57. cats says:

Darlene says: P.S. Does anyone know which dry food was involved? Another release today said that a dry food maker voluntarily recalled their food but they didn’t name the company?

Darlene, you may be “stuck” in this blog entry. If you click on “Cats” at the top left of the page, you’ll go to the main site with ALL the blog entries. A more recent one discloses that Hills recalled their SD Prescription Diet M/D Dry Food.

  58. Tonie Might says:

    What’s next? Baby foods?

This makes me ill and scared to death for all our babies.

  59. Joan Hall Hovey says:

I fed my little miniature poodle, CoCo, “Dry” Purina Alpo, and she got very sick, and has one failed kidney. Beware. I don’t think it’s on the recall list, but there isn’t a doubt in my mind dry Alpo was the culprit. She is recovering, but the damage is done.

  60. S. Winters says:

I feel terrible for the people who are going through this. After a friend alerted me about the horrors of what they put in pet food a few years ago (her dog died of cancer), I switched to a brand called Innova(www.innovapet.com) which only uses human grade food for their pet food. My cats are healthier than ever before. After about a year, I could see a difference in their coats and skin. Their skin used to be all scaley and my girl cat was always throwing up. I can’t even remember the last time that happened. I used to feed them Purina Cat Chow because I didn’t know any better. If you do a little research, you will find that many of the brands that bill themselves as better (Science Diet, Iams, etc) are not a whole lot better. As a cat lover, I just want everyone to know about this alternative.

  61. Desire' says:

Perhaps the simple solution is to educate ourselves on the ingredients list. We should focus on staying away from products that contain fillers, preservatives and Corn or Wheat byproducts. I had a very sick cat and he was put a Science Hills, to my dismay I saw his decline. I thought we were going to lose him. Well, a friend told me about Natural Balance, I did my research and he has been on Natural Balance for 7 months. He is a testimonial to this food. Bouncing back and loves the food. And our kitten that we adopted from the shelter is being raised on Natural Balance. This food is amazing. I use the wet and also the dry. I send love and prayers out to those that have lost their pets.

  62. Clare says:

I won’t ever buy any common brand cat food ever again. I went to Kroger and bought my cat New England Brandon Farms Organics. It has no artificial flavors, preservatives or colors. It has no white rice, brewer’s grains or grain by-products. It has no wheat gluten. It has no meat by products or by-product meal. I can actually read and understand the ingredients. I won’t list them all but the label says: organic chicken, chicken meal, organic ground barley, organic brown rice, fish meal etc… My cat was getting sick for a while. I actually thought she bulimic. I could have sworn I saw her putting her little paw in her mouth to throw up. ;) My kitty hasn’t gotten sick since I bought the organic. It is a little pricey. It is almost double what I paid before. 3.5 pounds cost $8.99 (well worth it!) Even if you don’t buy this brand of organic, try any kind. I don’t think anyone should buy a named brand cat food ever again. I’m serious! Hit them where it hurts. They should have let people know sooner! Buy organic forever. I’m am so sorry to hear your heartbreaking stories. Have faith that you will meet again at the rainbow bridge.

P.S. I never bought anything organic in my life. I’m gonna start!

I fed my cat Iams canned wet and she threw up. After recall switched to Fancy Feast wet. Now I see that too has wheat gluten. Is Baby food ok to give to cats? Am really worried: our cat is listless. Thanks for advice

  64. jarrad says:

I saw someone saying that they fed their NUTRO MAX CALIFORNIA SUPREME. Well so did I till last night when I read that some of the heavily suspected food was not on the recalled list. I did some research and found out that this exact product was debatable asto whether it was contiminated. I immediately went out and bought NATURAL BALANCE and threw out the rest of my nutromax. My cat had serious diahrea for a few days and she urinated once on the floor. I was suspicious but the food I was feeding her wasnt on the list but then I went to another website, not offically menu foods and found out a specific bacth was tainted. Make sure you do all your homework, to be safe I am not buying any wheat gluten or menu foods cat food. Good luck! And my thoughts go out to those who have lost their animals.

Please back up your claim with a link to the sites where you found this information. Although some Nutro Pouch Products were originally recalled, Nutro has a disclaimer in its site that no other products are affected. If some third party knows more than the President of Nutro about its products, we all deserve to know exactly who is making these claims.

My cat, Mikey passed away on March 16, 2007. He was 16 yrs old. He was very ill for 2 weeks, it was too late because his body was infected unsure which part of organs. I fed him MAX CAT Gourmet Classics can. Before I used that kind of brand, I gave Mikey Pro plan cans and has been eating soft meals with gravy for couple of years and I wonder if the MAX CAT Gourmet is poison!? I realize now dry food is much safer for cats. Thanks for listening! ” RIP MIKEY”

  67. Diane says:

Baby food is okay if it doesn’t have onion powder in it. I’ve been using Fancy Feast which has been okay and now I noticed that several of those new kind have wheat gluten and debating whether to throw out since I worry.

  68. Diane says:

Oh I see someone else asked about the Fancy Feast with wheat gluten. The company says its okay. I’m not buying anymore that has it in there for quite sometime. I just feel leery of it now.

  69. Jess says:

Blue Seal and By Nature brands are also safe.

  70. Shannon says:

I just want to say I am so sorry for all of the loss I have heard about. My baby is a yorkie and I wouldn’t know what to do without her. I stopped buying Science Diet and now feed her Brandon Farms Organic Food ,same as Clare :) She seems to like it and I can understand the ingredients. I would recommend the brand to anyone. Again sorry about your pets!!

  71. Holly says:

As of 4.10.07 Nutro has recalled a whole host of its canned 3oz. cat foods… all of the lots #’s match the unused cans I have on my shelf and had been feeding my two young cats for months. Had they recalled the products a month ago, perhaps my 1.8 year old cat wouldn’t be facing chronic renal failure… perhaps they both would have been spared nights in a vet. ICU, acute renal failure, catheters, and sub-q fluid therapy. And perhaps I could have been spared the anguish, sadness, fear, stress and $6k (and increasing) in vet bills.

  72. Amy says:

FYI: I noticed in the Kroger ad that Brandon Farms Organic Dog and Cat Food is on sale for 25% off this week. Now’s the time to stock up!

  73. Sheena says:

i feed my cat friskies, which is made by purina. is it ok to feed my cat? i am unsure what to feed them know!!!???

  74. Rosilyn says:

Is Brandon Farms Blue Seal cat food considered a good brand?

  75. Holly says:

I am so sorry for everyone who has lost loved ones to this disgusting mess. I am really scared for my cats, and I do not know what to feed them. I had fed them IAMS for years, b/c it used to be relatively good-quality dry food, but since they were bought out by Procter & Gamble it’s not been as good of a product. My Ruthie has little balding spots and my Idgie has been losing weight more quickly than I think is healthy. They had great check-ups at the vet recently, but I’m still really worried. I checked the foods that I had bought before the recall and there’s no wheat gluten in them, but how do I know what brand to switch to? I checked the ingredients lists thoroughly at the store today and decided to try the Blue Seal Brandon Farms brand. They liked the taste, but it seemed to give them dry-mouth or something, maybe it’s just the star-shape of the food? I don’t know. I just know that I am scared and unsure what to feed them anymore. I read that Innova might be good, but I do not find their website at all reassuring. I am so angry at and disappointed in the pet food industry for withholding essential information from pet owners and making people feel like it’s their fault they fed their pets contaminated food — as if there was any way that anyone outside the pet food industry could have know. I am certain that they will be sued and I hope they loose a tremendous amount of money over this; it’s the only thing that some businesspeople seem to give a damn about in this world, money. Makes me ill. I am thinking good thoughts for all of your pets, whether healthy, ill, or deceased, and sending pure white healing light your ways. We animal lovers must continue to band together and impress upon other people how important it is to spare them cruelty and suffering. They are such loving beings; we humans could learn a lot from them. Now I see why sometimes my mom says she likes most animals far better than she does most human beings.

Now Natural Balance has recalled their Venison & Brown Rice dry dog food and their Venison and Green Pea cat food…
supposedly not related to the melamine issue. A friend saw it on KOMO in Seattle and posted to me. I called one of our local stations and thats all they know too. We feed our dogs this food and it does not have wheat in it.

I hope the Brandon Farms Organics are safe, since I switched both my girls to it. They really seem to like it. For those of you using it, I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but the 1 lb bags of cat food have a $3 off coupon to use on the 3.5 or larger bags (of cat or dog food). The 1-lb bags sell for $2.99, so by the time you redeem your coupon, it is like you got the small bag free. Kroger has had the small bags on sale for $2.26, so by the time I redeem the coupon, I will come out 76 cents ahead for each bag! Needless to say, I stocked up on the small bags.

  81. Anne says:

I was concerned abaout “Fancy Feast”. You have made a comment that it was NOT on recall. Thank you so much. You have eased my mind about feeding this food to my 9 year old cat. I also give her Royal Canin “33″ special dry food. I contacted the company and they advised me that this was NOT one of the products affected by this contaminated wheat glutin.

Since this horrible tragedy I have been trying to find a safe, organic food. Does anyone know anything about Brandon Farms organic dry dog food? I don’t think I will ever feed my babies canned dog food again and want to find a safe organic dry dog food

  84. Elizabeth Gray says:

I just got a puppy not long before the recall began. He was sick shortly after I got him but I’m not sure it was from food. For as long as he’s been here I have fed him with natural organics and nothing from the recall list thankfully. I have been home cooking for him but this can be difficult to make sure he has the correct nutrition. I just found the Blue Bell Brandon Farms organic when I was going to have to leave him at the vets and couldn’t cook for him. He seems to like it and it seems like the ingredients are fairly good and safe. My theory is .. If I couldn’t, or wouldn’t eat it, I won’t feed it to him. For the person looking for the ingredients and the website, it’s hard to find but here it is. Hope this helps. http://www.bynaturepetfoods.com/productpages/organiccanneddog.php

Well I want to Say Brandon Foods Is Made at Menu Foods, Now Brandon says there food is Not Recalled, Hello, Have they Checked for Containments? I am taking it back to Krogers,I want nothing made by Menu Foods.

  87. Elijah says:

good luck to all the pet owners out there. You’ll need it. My suggestion is to join a class action suit. individual claims will take as long as menu can drag them out, as evidenced with lengthy time intervals between the initial call you make to us and the eventual cheque owners receive from the insurers, it could, literally be months. Especially since there is now a gag order preventing menufoods from helping you. as well you give up any legal options you have if you settle with menufoods directly.

  88. Elijah says:

The last posting was a quotation from an individual who is giving bad advice.

If Menu foods is contacting claimants who are represented by counsel, they are handling claims in bad faith and this could bring punitive damages, on top of any monetary awards.

However, if Menu foods is contacting claimants who have not informed Menu of being represented by counsel, or their attorney has not contacted Menu, then Menu should receive a “release of all claims” in exchange for any payment made on the claim. This would indeed waive customers right to future claims, which is standard in most settlement agreements.

Keep in mind that this is a property damage claim. Therefore plaintiffs are not entitled to emotional distress, missed time from work, etc. By law, this claim is the same as having a windstorm rip the roof of your house. You may have it replaced or have it paid at actual cash value, depending upon your home policy.

I find it interesting that Menu lists the different “Class Action Attorney’s” on their website! Menu would rather you obtain a lawyer because the payout will be much less. And ofcourse, the lawyers will get all the money and the plaintiff’s will most likely not see a penney. Remeber the class action asbestos lawsuit years ago? Enough said….

Bottom line, if you can settle a claim with Menu directly, you will fare much better than participating in class action suit.

    hi,
I have two kittens who are approaching their first birthdays. I am working on switching them over to adult food and I want to make sure I’m choosing something that will help them thrive and live as long as possible (especially the male cat who has gained a considerable amount of weight on kitten food since he was neutered). I want to try some premium foods (like Natural Balance) but I don’t know where to find it (Petsmart is opening up here soon - do they sell it?) and what’s the price usually?

    Thanks for any thoughts!

  93. Brandy L Benson says:

My Name is Brandy. In June of 2007 my cat Beasly died of liver failure. Beasly was three years old. Beasly loved wet food. I would regulary shop at Walmart for Cat Food. My cat Beasly ate a can a day of Special kitty. I notice about two weeks befored he passed that he was skinny. We were in the process of moving so I thought maybe he was stressed due to the change of the enviroment. The first night we had moved Beasly was not walking correct. He was slanting to the side. He would walk a little and then he would stop and sit. When I tried to hold him he refused. I could feel his bone on his bottom. Beasly was normally skinny but I knew this was not ok. That night I decided that it would be good to keep my eye on him and take him in the morning to the vet. My fiance worked nights at Hy-Vee. That morning he was off at 6 am and when Ryan came home Beasly had staggered to the door but would fall over continously. Beasly was meowing and continously having his mouth open breathing heavily. I didnt know but Ryan had immediately took Beasly to the emergency vet clinic. The offered us some different options. Do to my finaces my mother in law offered her credit card to help us to do tests. They found that he was passing to liver failure. They offered to submit him, they required a week of intensive care. I could not recieve permission to use Jody’s Card for that amount. They required for the intensive care to be paid for prior to Beaslys stay. The offered to give me a few cans of food( the food was for sick cats ) The gave me a shooter so I could suck the food up and shot it in his throat. It was the only option I could afford. At this time around noon Beasly couldn’t stand and he was limp. The inside of his ears were yellow and purple. He was secreting a funny smell. They offered to put him down. I refused. I took Beasly home with the food. They told me this would leave him a 50/50 chance to live. Within 2 hours a few friends of family had come to our aide. Cindy brought a warming pad. We put it on low and laid Beaslys body on top. Finally everyone convienced me to put him down. We called the local vet and met her there to put Beasly down. It was the most heart breaking ordeal I have been through. Beasly meant so much to me. I had got Beasly during the holidays during my first pregnancy. Bealsy was there for me to take my motherly love out on. I had a private creamation for beasly and my mother paid for a nice wooden box for his ashes. It really upsets me that he was taken away by death for un-natuaral reasons. I know that it was not his time. I have finally been able to come to some website and look for some way to let someone Know that this has done. The only thing I asked for is to help my mother in law pay the amount back to her credit card. I have forms from both vets and we have requested her credit card statement. I need help to recieve some form of justice to put this at rest. I have coped with his death, this is the finally step to let hime go. My email is BBenson@LibertyBankIowa.com . My home phone is 515-221-1726. My address is 1015 68th street. Unit 4. West Des Moines Iowa 50266. I am documenting my statements i have submitted today. Please and Thank you. Help our family. It has caused us to have a difficult trusting in the food we would feed any new family pets when we decide it is the right time to adopt.

Fancy Feast killed my cat, she was only 8yrs. old. Nestle Purina admitted fault, and I have a letter to prove it. They have put me in touch with a claims agency and don’t want to hear from me anymore. Fancy Feast was not on any recall list. I thought I was giving her the best. They advertise a white Persian cat eating out of a crystal dessert dish. How she suffered from Kidney Failure!! I wouldn’t by a Product from the Nestle Purina company if my life depended on it!!! I have had three pets (2 cats and a small dog) get urinary tract infections. It finally dawned on me that all three consumed Delikat cat food by Purina. The latest cat is very sick. The other pets were given antibiotics and placed on Sciene diet special catfood. I am so sorry that I was unwittingly harmful my cat Sampson by feeding him the Delikat. Has anyone else experienced this?
