Just found this website with alot of current info on this topic-it’s www.howl911.com.
Thanks for the great info on this site. It’s really important during this Menu Foods tragedy that pet owners have a site they can trust! PETA has a list of the brands of pet foods that don’t test on animals. For now, we can only hope that these have much more stringent manufacturing processes as well. I feed my own cats Wellness brand, and am disturbed not to see it on the PETA list, and by the comments on this site of a former R & D person in the business. Hopefully this will lead to more ethical practices by this industry.
My husbands 83 year old Aunt has two cats that eat Wiskas. Does any one know if this is on the poisioned food list? Help me please so I can tell her.
Tracy, if you’ll take the time to click on the Food Recall Index linked to the top of this blog entry, and look at “List of Recalled Cat Foods,” you’ll see that Wiskas is not on the list.

thank you for this web site .i’ll have to tell my mom about it.
Does anyone prepare themselves their cat’s food. Receipes??
What about the flavors that are not on the list. Nutro makes can and pouches.
I am not taking chances I am returning it ALL.
I have been reading the ingredients listed on cans of cat food many contain upwards to 55 ingredient. Is this really necessary? It cannot be healthy for our cats.
I hear there are “cat safe” foods out there now that have no wheat gluten. which ones are they?
Does anyone know about Hills prescription cat foods. I have a cat eating feline CD. I tried to get on their site and could not find info about any of the foods.
My elderly cat has stomach problems and only eats the gravy from the cans and not the meat. I have been buying whatever is on sale since he started this, and whatever sounds like it has the most gravy. (Some manufacturer should make a gravy that tastes like the chicken “juice/gravy” that comes in the can for sick cats that can’t eat solids.) The very day the recall came out I had a can of this food in his bowl, and I’ve no idea how many of the other poison foods he may have eaten. I can’t afford to take him to a vet for expensive testing. What really chaps my hide is the appalling way that the pet food manufacurers are stealing our money while causing early death to our pets. Many of the premium cans cost $1.20. I can eat a can of Spaghettios for dinner for 89 cents on sale. Why should cats have to eat sick dead animals and body parts that humans would not touch, when their food costs more than ours. A can of tuna can be found on sale for 39 cents to a dollar depending on quality. I realize that there must be some processing for their digestion, and added nutrients, but there is no excuse for them eating garbage at these prices. Also, when the can says “chicken dinner”, one of the top ingredients should not be fish. My sickest cat does not like fish. My other cat appears to be vegetarian and doesn’t like any kind of meat, and she has a tumor, which I feel sure that is caused by her life-long eating Science Diet dry, yet that’s all that I have available to choose for her. I’ve tried some of the “natural” and most expensive dry foods, and she doesn’t like any of them. Perhaps she is “addicted” to her Science Diet, or one of the ingredients. Pet food manufacturers should be VERY ashamed of themselves for cutting corners and making an extra buck at the cost of our pet companions’ health. They make SO much money that they shouldn’t all be using the same cheap imported ingredient, regardless of brand and price. You expect ALL pet food to be equally safe for their health, and price bringing a tastier and costlier ingredient list, but none should promote cancer or other health problems.
Thanks for all the info and links.
I’ve been thankfully fortunate. My cat eats Purina Cat Chow Indoor Formula Dry Food. Also Friskies Pate(Seafood Supreme) then for a treat some Fancy Feast at times.
I do have a couple of cans that I bought quite awhile of PC(Presidents Choice ) Half Cuts….I’ve been wary of that even tho’ I bought it a while ago….
we should be demanding regulation of the pet food industry in Canada and the United States…Its time…………
I feed my cat EVO the highest amount of animal protein…on the market..and yes fancy feast………….
We need to demand that all pet food manufacturers produce better quality food for our cats and dogs…our friends and close family companions…they deserve……..better than the garbage put in their food…….that in some cases is over charging owners……misleading people into thinking that the pet food is high quality………….beware…….its not…..
I am very thankful for this information.
Being old, my companion, my cat, is my one true friend, who trusts me and loves me.
I would be totally lost without her.
Just heard that Hills Science Diet Feline M/D is being recalled. It is a dry cat food. If you are using it or know anyone who is please go to the Hills site:
http://www.hillspet.com/menu_foods/Menu_Foods_03302007_en_US.htm
Thanks for the link to “Howl 911″, Monique. It was very thoughtful of you to post that for us.
I switched to Purina Kitten Chow for my 3 adult cats, even the one that has chronic IBD, the day I heard of the recall. That was a week or so ago. And surprise, surprise, Mr. Sensitive Stomach hasn’t had any negative reactions or thrown up once since I changed his food. Of course he will weigh 700 pounds if he stays on it indefinately, but it seems to be a safe food for now.
I did have 2 of the cats on Feline M/D canned and that was a scare-since the Feline M/D DRY was recalled today. I just missed that one by a minute-almost bought the dry today.
The following website has pet food recipes. You may want to double check the ingredients, but it ALL looked pretty safe to me. Rice is a mainstay in all pet foods and my cats like it. You can always blend and mix-which may be the safest way to go.
Good luck to you all and THANK YOU, FRANNY, for putting this up for all of us!
Sorry all-here is the web site for pet food recipes:

i feel like that the people that was affected by the poison foods, should be re-emburst there money and also pay back the people all the money that they put out for vet bills. my cat is 17 and she took sick, but luckly she didn’t get sick since it was a can that wasn’t effected but i could of been one of the list of people. i threw out all my cans. is the purina pouches and other cans o.k. ? i sure hope so. i would be devestaded if something would have happened.
hope to find out anymore things and kept up with all this information.
thank you

I agree with what many of you are saying. Our food even has regulations, so why not have regulations on food for the animals we consider family?
Franny, thanks for keeping your readers updated. You are a big help.
Some Friskies dry cat food contain wheat gluten. Be sure to read the ingredient labels of any pet food you are buying.
This site below shows a list of foods not on the recall list and the author(s) keeps it updated. Note, however, that these foods are “reported safe by the manufacturers” but I must admit that seeing the foods my precious cats eat on this list lowered my fear level significantly. There are also some comments on this site that people might find useful.

I have been feeding my cats PURINA Fancy Feast wet food 3oz cans, along with a dry food that is NOT on any recall list.. Is Purina wet Fancy Feast on OR going to be on the any recall list.
Very Concerned
I missed the news section today on the new recalls on dry dog food, does anyone know which Purina dry dog food was recalled?
My Shih-Tzu was tested again today. My first trip to the vet was almost $200.00 . Today with the blood work panel, antibotics for kindey infection which is still there from 2 weeks ago. Todays visit was 286.00. He was fed Nutro weight management, a food that was in the recall. I hope we all learn from these so called money hungry companies that make their claims to having only the best of ingredients when they can use road kill and dogs, cats and all the above in our pets food. If we don’t take a stand now and demand more strict regulations it will only happen again. It frost me to think that Menu Foods waited so long before the recall. And too that I pay a big price for their junk. I have decided to go Holistic with a Dr. that specializes in wholesome food. In the long run my sebastian won’t run this risk again and I will have peace of mind. If you can, please research all you can and you will know why I’m so upset. I believe before all of this is said and done there will be more and more dog and cat food brands pulled. Menu Foods should pay every Vet bill and then some. I want to know why too that we are buying this wheat glutten from the Chinese when we have our own American farmer that we can trust and they can use the money.
Roxanne,
Your email worries me as you say one of your cats seems to be a ‘vegetarian’.
Cats MUST have a high protein diet (they are known as obligate carnivores) and cannot survive on a vegetarian diet, they will eventually become very ill, even lose their vision and or die.
I am sorry you can’t afford to get your elderly sick cat checked by the vet, but if he is only able to eat gravy, you could puree his food, and add water to make it very soft, as I did with my sick 18 year old diabetic cat Porky, who had a tumour and swallowing problems. He eventually had to be euthanased last year.
If you can’t affford their treatment, I believe your local ASPCA may be able to help you.
By the way, I am in Sydney, Australia. My partner and I are crazy about cats and have 3 between our 2 households, but at one stage I had 7! Porky was the last of that bunch.
Again, kind regards to everyone whose animals have been affected by these events. We are thinking of you, while also trying to establish if the food we feed our cats is safe.
Anne.
I am feeding my 6 mo old kitten Fancy Feast wet and dry but I noticed wheat glueten on the labels. Is it where they have their plants? Or what? last night I gave him only Chicken of the Sea tuna and took away all other foods–he has been avoiding the dry Fancy feast and only licking off the gravy on the canned Fancy Feast. Is Fancy Feast dry and canned safe???
I’ve been feeding Fancy Feast wet and they haven’t gotten sick. I noticed they have a new thing on their website explaining that the wheat gluten in it was not from the bad bath. Hope they’re right. I have some dry too.
I meant to say bad batch.

IF ANY OF MY CATS OR DOGS GET SICK OR DIE FROM PET FOOD THAT IS NOT ON THE LIST I WILL NEVER FORGIVE MYSELF OR THE COMPANIES WHO HAVEN’T DONE THE TESTING BUT SAID THEIR FOOD WAS SAFE SAFE.
EVERY BRAND OF PET FOOD ON THE MARKET, CANNED, POUCHED OR DRY MUST BE TESTED!!!
Has anyone heard about Kibble and Bits canned dog food? Or K&B Golden years dry dog food? Also any word about Purina Cat Chow Indoor formula? My cats like to steal chunks of wet food from the dog and I am afraid to feed them any of it.
the food my cats ate is not on the list of recalled items yet. It was a brand new case of FANCY FEAST Elegant Medley Chicken Florentine(Wheat Gluten) 2nd can into new case of this stuff and Geisha was refusing to eat had projectile vomiting drooling, gagging, lots of lip licking, Topaz started having similar systems next evening, just new in my heart it was the food only thing they eat in common, after blood work and endoscope with biopsy my cats have been exposed to the toxin. People need to stay away from anything with gravy, or any dry with wheat gluten my vet said it will take at least
My little toy poodle was eating the nutro puppy with chicken and she vomited. My daughter started digging out the chunks of chicken in the food saying that our dog didnt like them she licked all around them so she was going to just throw them away. Our dog did not want to eat , we kept making her eat this stuff and she started urinating more often each time she went out(a couple of times each time) she got lethargic, and now she has bloody diahrrea and I have had blood work, urinalysis on her and fluids administered and need I go on? I am heart broken for my little dog that unbeknownst to me was trying to let me know she did not want that food and then there is the toll of the worry for my kids and myself for her. I did all this thinking I was feeding her the best. I am actually disgusted with the pet food industry. I am making my dog her own homemade food recipe my vet gave me (after I get this gastrointestinal problem solved for her) and I am never looking back. It is such a criminal negligence that someone should be held responsible through the courts. If , God forbid , my dog dies from this they could not repay enough for the heart ache. I am now in the thousands spent. Thanks Nutro! Do you think they want me to do advertisements for them? JUST HAD TO VENT! God Bless and may God bless your little animals.
Went to my local Petsmart on Sunday. The entire section of Max Cat Canned Cat food was cleared out! They said it wasn’t on the recall list, but imagine my horror when I saw the vast, empty shelves, knowing my pantry was FILLED with Max Cat Senior canned food and other varieties of theirs. I took all my Nutro Max Canned Food back. All Nutro Dry food, I pitched the remainder. I at least wanted to feed a brand that had NO food at all on the recall list. I use Blue Spa Turkey and Chicken CANNED cat food and Royal Canin Light 37 DRY cat food. I have used them before and 5 indoor cats like both. My suggestion is if a company has ANY products on the list….don’t take chances, buy another high quality brand. Royal Canin makes dry food for specific breeds of cats, so I tend to think they are more careful. At least I’m hoping that is the case. Blue Spa is a smaller Connecticut based company with a plant of their own in Missour, I believe. They use human quality ingredients, not garbage. I buy both these brands at Petsmart. Good luck to all!
Is Deli-Cat on the Menu recall
Deli-Cat isn’t on the list, its made by Purina. Wonder if anybody else had trouble with Fancy Feast. I had fed all the kinds and didn’t notice anything but finally got nervous and threw out the ones with wheat gluten.
I haven’t tried Friskies cause the cans are so big. Got little Natural Balance cans and they’ll have to eat them. Think they like Fancy Feast better but I’d rather buy Natural Balance since no glutens at all.
I don’t think my cats even like cuts and gravy style foods with little bites in them anyway. They usually would lick out the gravy and not eat the bites until later if they got hungry. They are lazy to chew and rather have a mushy canned food.
I have been wondering about Purina Cat Chow Indoor Formula, too. I have one cat that is sick, we have three. Sleeps, won’t eat by hisself and is very weak. I am feeding him sunkist tuna liquified. Keeping it down. The Vet said he had an infection, he is on Claramox for the infection. Might not have anything to do with recall, don’t know. My heart goes out to all pets and families being affected in such a hurtful way. If this was done on purpose, may who ever has done this reap what they have sown
I recently had an incident with fancy feast the one with shrimp in it, bones that were not finely cut up and could very easily choke a cat. Also there are several fancy feasts flavors that do have the wheat glutin in it and my vet advised me to not use those at all. Read the fine print. I’m concerned over the Science Diet Cd as I can’t seemt to find a for sure answer??? Expensive food supposed to be the best and now the prescription one has been recalled and now this one ? I want to know as all my cats eat that and have for some time. Thanks. Sherry (Calif)
Hi, I found this on Science Diet finally Cd.

I switched my dog to Homestyle Select dog food. It is in its own refrigerator case at Kroger. Comes in a sausage tube and is made from real meat, rice, peas, and carrots. Kiai has been eating it for a month and it’s done wonders for her. She used to chew herself bald and bloody and now her fur is growing back and she’s sleeping through the night rather than pacing and digging at herself. I had her on Kibbles and Bits wet food since it was easy to chew (she’s old and has lost teeth) I’m not saying the food was bad, but I think she was allergic to it. The Homestyle Select comes in different size rolls according to your dog’s size. We buy the largest tube which is 5lbs for around $10.00 and she eats 1/2 to 1lb a day mixed with dry senior dog food. I know it’s pricey, but for Kiai it’s worth it to give her relief.
fancy feast elegant medley. Is it safe now that the (new) news up date is out? What a mess this is turning into.
Fancy Elegant Medley contains wheat gluten. Is it bad yet??? or maybe tomorrow…
Well, since I switched to Blue Buffalo canned cat food, it was recalled! I am now using Innova lite and a new one that has no grains at all called By Nature, which is now carried at Petsmart. They produce the canned cat food at their own plant in New Hampshire. Their website is bynaturepetfoods.com. I don’t know anything further about them. Has anyone else used this canned or dry cat food? It’s very dense with meat, since it has no fillers/grains & my cats seem to like it…but who knows how safe anything really is these days.
Yes Homestyle Select is probably the best brand out there right now. I just recently switched my new puppy on their Puppy Chicken Dinner from Mighty Dog. My puppy is eating more now, and Homestyle doesn’t have the preservatives and greasy gravity in Mighty Dog. It also smells alot better. Also read in Newsweek recently that Homestyle Has NOT been affected by the recent Pet Food Recall. So I defiantly recommend Homestyle Select for any pet owners that are concern about the Recall. They also sell another brand called DeliFresh too.
I have an 8year old spayed house cat, she has a cold nose she responds ok; but she has been vomiting numerous times in the past few days. She seems to be ok, except for the vomiting, should i take her in to be looked at? There as been no change in her diet infact i have forbidden food and just giving her water. The only current new product used in the house is a spray called “OUST” would this be affecting her? Thank you.
Susan, Im a vet tech and as of now Hills CD is OK.

My wife got Homestyle Dogfood today as part of a shopper survey and she said our pointer/lab Ryan went nutso over it. Loved it so much that he brought his empty bowl out to the living room practically into my wifes lap. When does this and its not often it is his way of saying please, may I have some more.
