PETA Urges the FDA to Include Dry Pet Foods in Recall
Friday March 30, 2007
PETA, in its ongoing role as "watchdog" for Iams, has received new ammunition against that company, in the form of a letter from one woman, reporting the death of her cat after eating a diet consisting only of Iams dry food. Apparently based on this letter, PETA has asked the FDA to "issue anemergency expansion of the pet-food recall to include all dry foods subject to complaints until it is chemically tested for safety."
PETA also wants the FDA to investigate a delay in the recall by Iams, stating that that company may have about the food contamination as early as February 20th, 2007.
In other related coverage, the itchmo! site is compiling its own study, by soliciting reader responses on the sickness and/or deaths of their own pets after eating dry foods. To date, it has compiled 20 cat deaths and 27 cat illnesses, and has broken down the date to include brand names.
As with everything you read on the Internet, keep in mind that these reports are anecdotal, and that the itchmo! site itself offers the caveat that these are "self-reported figures."

Comments
Pet Connection is reporting today that the toxin in the food is not aminopterin but actually melamine.
Just because the cat ate nothing but Iams dry food does not mean it is the cause of the cat’s kidney failure. At the very least, a letter from the attending veterinarian saying he/she believed this caused the kidney failure. We know nothing of the cats physical history or condition prior to its death.
better to be safe than sorry
now they are saying some dog treats are bad too, where can I find a list of them? Is it just treats with wheat glutton?
our perfectly healthy kitten died after eating from a new bag of dry food only one day. It took four days for her to die. She was extremely lethargic and thirsty for those four days and we tried everything we could to help her but nothing worked. so sad. this happened in january and the brand of cat food is on the recall lists.
We switched our healthy indoor cat from one brand of dry food (not on the recall list) to Iams dry food (not on the list either). 8 days later she was diagnosed with kidney failure, 3 days later, we were forced to put her down. An FDA employee picked up her food (both brands) to get sampled… it’s a little too coincidental to me..
