Another Pet Food Toxin found by the FDA

The ASPCA reported their suspicions three days ago that aminopterin was an unlikely suspect in the pet food recall. Today in an FDA press conference, that agency announced the discovery of melamine in food samples from the recall. Melamine is that stuff you find in durable plastic products and flame-retardant foam, among other products. Although it is not normally highly toxic, concentrations of this substance in high doses can affect the kidneys, especially in cats. While the FDA and other scientists continue their investigation, the SPCA advises that treatment for kidney failure continue.

Today I returned a bag of dry cat food “Frisky’s” to Thrifty’s Store here in Sidney, British Columbia after my cat continually threw the undigested food that she had been snubbing but ate eventually. I thought she was perhaps just being fussy. Jason, the store manager, assured me that their system is automatically updated on a daily basis and he suggested that perhaps this product is just not tolerated by my cat. I asked him if he was going to pull the product to be on the safe side he told me that there have been no related incidences of animals becoming ill with dry food. I replied to him that I would be contacting your organization. He suggested that I take my cat to the Vet across the street and gave me a free bag of Meow Mix. So far, no problem with Puss Puss although I think that she may be leary about eating at this point. I did save some of the uneaten bag of Frisky’s. What should I do? My cat was eating Frisky canned food all the time.
The last time I bought it she started coughing up the blood every time (few hours later) she ate it.
I took her to a vet and they could not find anything wrong with the cat.
She got well after I moved her to human quality food.
