Menu Foods Clears Foods outside the Recall Dates

Friday March 30, 2007
On the heels of the FDA press conference today announcing the discovery of melamine in wheat gluten imported from China, Menu Foods has held its own press conference. In his opening remarks, Menu Foods' President and CEO, Paul Henderson stated that Menu Foods is now clearing for sale recalled food products manufactured outside the original reported dates (of December 3, 2006 through March 6, 2007. Henderson went on to say,
The pet food that we have manufactured after March 6 is safe and healthy. How do we know this? First, it contains no melamine. Secondly, it contains none of the suspect wheat gluten. Thirdly, all of the testing that has been conducted, including the routine taste tests that were underway prior to the discovery of this problem, have demonstrated that those products not associated with the suspect wheat gluten performed very well and in a manner consistent with historic norms.

Quite simply, one supplier's product was adulterated with a material that is not part of any known screening procedure for wheat gluten. The important point today is that the source of the adulteration has been identified and removed from our system.
Are you reeling yet, from the "off again - on again" nature of this recall? If so, you are not alone. I thought it was worthy of note that these press releases are addressed to "Business/Financial Editors." Although I don't fit either of those categories, I think consumers also have a right to know.

We watched the live broadcast and the thing that stood out the most was the CEO’s quick denial of the reporter’s request to tour the plant. We were taken back by the almost anger in his voice.

I was told by a friend that Hill’s Science Diet dry cat food has now been recalled. Is this true? I can’t find any news reports of it. This is what my cats live on!

I do not trust Menu foods or anything they say. I will have nothing to do with them ever again. Thankfully I can afford the more pricey food. I feel awful for those and the poor babies in shelters that can not.

Alpo announced a new recall due to the same wheat gluten as Menu Foods. Why does the FDA keep withholding the list of companies?

Just buy cat food that does not have grains in it. I buy Wellness. No meat by-products or grains.

This whole debacle (for that is what it really is) has made me firm in my stance that there is no food like home cooked food. I was raised cooking food for my dog, cat and racoon. I thought it was silly then, but I don’t anymore.

All ten of my furbabies will now eat nothing but good ol’ home cooked chicken, fish, and eggs that is marketed for human consumption. If I wouldn’t eat it, why would I feed it to them?
