Shelter Cat of the Week: Amber
Amber is a beautiful brown DSH tabby cat with only one minor flaw: she only has one eye. Amber came to Animal House Shelter, a no-kill shelter in Huntley, IL, with a badly infected eye. When treatment failed, the eye was removed. The policy of Animal House Shelter is to provide the best veterinarian care for dogs and cats, all of whom have been rescued from kill shelters or animal control. Shelter animals are all neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and routinely treated with Heartguard Plus or Frontline Plus.
Although shelter workers were initially concerned about Amber's safety and well-being in a room shared by 80 cats, she settled in nicely within a short time. She plays with the other cats, but is happiest when she is cuddling on the lap of one of the volunteers who all dote on Amber.
Rich Hall, who wrote Amber's biography for Animal House Shelter, thinks Amber deserves a loving forever home. I wholeheartedly agree. If you have what it takes to provide that home, and live anywhere in the Huntley, IL area, consider visiting the Animal House Shelter to meet this adorable cat. I'd love to print her happy ending story here in the near future.

If you live in another area, but would like to adopt a cat, please visit your local shelter. Remember that November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month, so please also consider adopting an older cat. The rewards will be priceless.

Oh, she is beautiful. And she looks like she is winking.
Is this a new feature you are going to have, Franny? Or have you had it for a while and I missed it?
Actually, another About.com Guide sent the link to me because she was so touched by the story. I’m thinking about doing it for a weekly feature, E. The problem, of course, is that there are SO MANY deserving shelter cats all over the world, that it would be very difficult to choose just one a week.
Yes, I can understand that. It is like the News host here that has “Wednesday’s Child”, a spotlight on a child that needs to be adopted. How to choose?! BUT! It does get the idea in people’s head about adopting rather than giving birth, or buying from a breeder.
What a sweet kitty. We’d love to adopt from a shelter like this but unfortunately they requires that all members of the family be present when you go to pick out a kitty. That makes it nearly impossible because hubby is not around during the days at all.
I hope she finds a good home. She really is pretty!
Happy Cat Owner: Those rules are in place for the protection of the cats, but not ALL shelters have that kind of rule. They most likely want to watch for very young kids who play too roughly with kittens, or for family members who may show an obvious dislike for cats. Most shelters have weekend hours, and in the case of Animal house, they are open daily (except Wednesday) until 7 p.m., I’m sure someone who REALLY wanted to adopt Amber could arrange to have everyone there, if they have that kind of rule.
Dear Franny Syufy,
Amber trully IS a beautiful cat,and it Does look asif she IS WINKING!!Also,if this IS a NEW feature,PLEASE share more stories like Amber’s!!They are beautiful stories, like the cats written about in the stories!!
Too bad I don’t live in the area. I adopted a five year old cat two years ago - she would probably enjoy the company
I love her just the way she is,
More love in cats is what tenders and protects them.
I would adopt her if she was in my area too.
Beautiful i feel bad for everyone even people who suffered in hearing, blind, and cancer!
PEACE
What a great story. Let’s hope it has a truly happy ending and Amber finds her forever home. Keep up the good work at Animal House and thank you to Franny for stories like Amber’s.
I think this is a wonderful story - I definitely think a regular feature would be a terrific idea. I appreciate your comment on there being so many..but it’s such a great way to highlight the work the shelters and people who work in them do. We would all love to support them in any way we can, and bringing them forward to the attention of the public is a great service. If you are able to continue, don’t forget your friends, human and feline, in Canada!!! (My Chloe would like to put in a special word for the Halton Animal Shelter. She and her 3 kittens were fostered through them and she has blessed our home for the past 12 years!)
Amber looks like such a loving and appealing cat. Please let us know when she is adopted. I would love her but live in the Reno area. I hope Amber finds a home soon.
Really good and really interesting post. I expect (and other readers maybe
) new useful posts from you!
Good luck and successes in blogging!
