San Francisco SPCA

Shelter Spotlight

By , About.com Guide

The San Francisco SPCA received its charter in April, 1868, and in doing so, sparked the humane movement in the western states. It hasn't slowed down since then. In 1994, the SF/SPCA set another precedent by signing the Adoption Pact with the City's Department of Animal Care and Control, with the goal of making San Francisco the first "no-kill" city in the United States.

The Pact states that if the City Animal Control Center is unable to find a home for any of its healthy dogs or cats, The San Francisco SPCA will take the animal and guarantee to place him.

The Pact also gives the San Francisco SPCA the ability to save the lives of thousands of treatable dogs and cats. (On June 13, 1997, The SF/SPCA modified its pit bull adoption program to no longer accept pit bulls with unknown histories.)

Although San Francisco has not yet met its goal of becoming a no-kill city, it is well on its way. In FY 1999-2000, 73 percent of all dogs and cats taken in by the City animal shelter system were either returned to their caregivers or adopted into new homes.

In addition to adoption, the SF/SPCA offers dozens of other programs, including an innovative Feral Cat Assistance Program, which works with the feral caregiver community to offer free veterinary examination, vaccinations, and spay/neutering to all feral cats in the City.

Maddie's Pet Adoption Center A state-of-the-art adoption facility designed by Lucy Schlaffer and Paul Bonacci of ARQ Architects in San Francisco, Maddie's Pet Adoption Center is more like a luxurious home than a "kennel." Gone are the cages; in their place you'll see private cat condos complete with perches with a view, trees for climbing, and couches for sleeping.

You can visit the adoption center seven days a week, or even arrange a group tour by calling the Community Outreach Coordinator at 415-522-3569.
