Guide Review - Animals in the News
Animals in the News is a clever little book comprised of mostly-staged black and white photos on backgrounds which resemble pages torn out of a pulp magazine. The humorous annotations range from sophomoric to sadistic in a few cases. Altogether, I was mildly amused by some of the content, and actually laughed out loud over a couple of the photos, though not necessarily at the captions. One cute one showed two young chimpanzees holding puppies. The caption read, "Just when it was thought to have finally cleaned up its act, controversy again surrounds an Orange County fertility clinic." I'm not sure whether to be disappointed or relieved to see so few cats among the mix, but I'm not wholly surprised, knowing cats' natural aversion to being the object of jokes.
