Top Picks and Reviews of Cat Foods

By Franny Syufy, About.com

Top Picks Cat Foods

I have spent 10 years researching and studying feline nutrition. Like many advocates of feeding cats the highest quality foods, the book, "Foods Your Pets Die For," by Ann M. Martin provided the impetus and passion for my research. The foods you will see here are, in my opinion, of the best quality. None of them contain meat by-products, chemical preservatives, or animal fat.

I feed my own cats many of these foods, in rotation. Unless your cat is on a special diet, I recommending rotating foods. It is a good way of ensuring your cat receives a well-balanced diet, and it helps prevent cats from becoming overly fussy about their foods. Feel free to consult your veterinarian about the ingredients in these foods.

Guide Reviews of Cat Foods

I tested each of these foods on my own cats before writing the reviews. Please keep in mind that these reviews are subjective in nature, and only my opinion. Your cats' acceptance of these foods may vary.

Home-Prepared Cat Food

While it is possible to create a raw food diet for cats "from scratch," it can be too time-consumer for today's busy people. These commercial supplements can cut hours from your time in the kitchen, which you can spend bonding with your cats.

Books About Cat Food and Nutrition

I recommend every responsible cat caregiver to build a resource library around cat care. These are my own top choices.
